moderated Jaws2018 reading characters on web page

Hello, When logging on to a web site there are times I’m asked to enter special characters or type in what it says by a image. I’m unable to tell what the characters or the image so I cannot log on until someone with site tells me what to type in. Is there a way for Jaws to tell me the characters? Even when there is audio, the words spoke are stated so close together and very fast I can not enter  those words.

I just received a notice when I started my computer this morning that said “DWM Notification.” What does this mean? And how do I read the notification? I could only hear the heading and nothing more.

I’ve never done this, but the techtalk discussion where Mr. Joseph Lee talks about the 1803 update should help. As for adding appointments, here’s how to do this. When you’re in your outlook calendar—CTRL 2 after getting into outlook on the desktop, find your day with right/left arrow keys. Press CTRL n to start a new appointment and follow the prompts. You can save your appointment/s by pressing the escape key and answering yes to the save dialogue. If you have something to catch the techtalk podcasts, Joseph Lee’s should be the 6th one, but they’re clearly labeled I’d say.

Hi,

As I indicated in another thread and again apologies for intruding into that one. I am experiencing an issue on the recently new and supposedly improved roll out of the

web site. When one logs in and goes to create a shipping label or print a label as some browsers call the link the following problem occurs.

After filling in all label information such as recipients name address shipping date and whether they need to receive an email or not you’re presented with radio buttons for choosing whether you’ll be using a flat rate box or will be using your own box and entering package weight. When the latter enter package weight radio button is selected with JAWS 2018 or other screen readers it registers that this radio button has been adequately selected but the edit fields for entering said weight information remain grayed out.  This is the case whether one uses enter spacebar keep pass through jaws cursor or touch cursor under Windows 10 and in all browsers tried such as Internet Explorer 11, Microsoft edge, Google Chrome and Fire Fox 60 with all maximized.

Thus it seems to me that this is an issue with web site code not necessarily screen readers but that’s just my own hypothesis at the moment.  As I said I reported it to the USPS the day it was discovered May 1st via Twitter and via their own tech support number and it was escalated as a sighted tech support couldn’t manifest the issue it’s only occurring when screen readers are in play. Sadly I’ve heard nothing back from them yet. So if any other users have USPS accounts and experience similar results do report it to them in the interest of helpful advocacy.

I hope that clarifies all that was tried before I reported it to them or mentioned it on list.

Hi Bill,

I have found I don't need to route the JAWS cursor, I just click when the
virtual cursor is focused on the radio button. The virtual cursor is
tracked by the mouse by default.

there's a radio button that isn't operational for me with any screen reader

Yeah I've had this problem too, although its not a perfect solution the only
way round this I've found is to shut down jaws and open NVDA, using NVDA you
can then select the tick box , plus the drop down menu which asks for the
reason for the return then click the next/continue button, then when on the
next page you can shut down NVDA and open jaws and continue from there on
in with jaws. Like I said its not a perfect solution, but it gets the job
done none the less. Hope this helps

Hi Robin,

Try left mouse clicking on that radio button then. You don't need to route
the JAWS cursor, since the mouse tracks your virtual cursor.

Hi Pam,

Works for me. What version of JAWS do you have?

Also, try focusing the virtual cursor on the checkbox and pressing the left
mouse click key, Slash on the number pad, this will also tick it.

Sometimes JAWS is not so smart about passing keys through to an application, so we have to give it a little helping hand.

That bypass key is often not known about, or forgotten by people, and it really saves your bacon sometimes.

I haven't played with distribution lists much but you might want to consider just doing something like the following because its so simple.
Start a new message.  Put all the addresses into the message that you want.
then, in the to line or wherever you placed the addresses, use control a to select all.
Then copy to the clipboard.
Open Notepad and paste the addresses in.
Then save the file with whatever name you wish.
In future, open the file, copy all the addresses to the clipboard, then close the program.
Start a new message in Windows Live Mail and paste the addresses into whatever field you wish. 
 
Using a distribution list may have advantages, such as removing an address may be easier, I'm not sure.  But I seem to remember that there are quirks to working with distribution lists in the new version of Windows Live Mail and my proposal may be easier and less annoyance. 
 
I haven't done anything with distribution lists in the old Windows Live Mail so I can't comment on doing so.

The only thing that corrected the static was using NVDA. Jaws suggested I use NVDA.

I did have this problem with the 1803 update. Well not so much static but an incessant clicking. I rolled back to 1709 and things seemed to have gotten better, but not gone away entirely. I'm pretty sure part of it has to do with my audio device.

Seems like since the April update the static has dropped somewhat. It seems to be a problem when I type. I’m a fast typer.

The only thing that corrected the static was using NVDA. Jaws suggested I use NVDA.

Hi,
As I indicated in another thread and again apologies for intruding into that one. I am experiencing an issue on the recently new and supposedly improved roll out of the
web site. When one logs in and goes to create a shipping label or print a label as some browsers call the link the following problem occurs.
After filling in all label information such as recipients name address shipping date and whether they need to receive an email or not you’re presented with radio buttons for choosing whether you’ll be using a flat rate box or will be using your own box and entering package weight. When the latter enter package weight radio button is selected with JAWS 2018 or other screen readers it registers that this radio button has been adequately selected but the edit fields for entering said weight information remain grayed out.  This is the case whether one uses enter spacebar keep pass through jaws cursor or touch cursor under Windows 10 and in all browsers tried such as Internet Explorer 11, Microsoft edge, Google Chrome and Fire Fox 60 with all maximized.
Thus it seems to me that this is an issue with web site code not necessarily screen readers but that’s just my own hypothesis at the moment.  As I said I reported it to the USPS the day it was discovered May 1st via Twitter and via their own tech support number and it was escalated as a sighted tech support couldn’t manifest the issue it’s only occurring when screen readers are in play. Sadly I’ve heard nothing back from them yet. So if any other users have USPS accounts and experience similar results do report it to them in the interest of helpful advocacy.
I hope that clarifies all that was tried before I reported it to them or mentioned it on list.

there's a radio button that isn't operational for me with any screen reader

site and I thought perhaps this method might work on it by chance but sadly
it failed there too.

To select the tick box with JAWS, simply press the bypass key, JAWS key+3
then space bar. This will tick it.

Yeah I've had this problem too, although its not a perfect solution the only
way round this I've found is to shut down jaws and open NVDA, using NVDA you
can then select the tick box , plus the drop down menu which asks for the
reason for the return then click the next/continue button, then when on the
next page you can shut down NVDA and open jaws and continue from there on
in with jaws. Like I said its not a perfect solution, but it gets the job
done none the less. Hope this helps

As I have admitted, I’m not tech savvy and don’t know technical terms for much, or how to work around anything except by trial and error. So, this may not work for you, but a few days ago, I couldn’t get JAWS to read a PDF file after I moved to it from Word. I got frustrated and turned JAWS off and back on using the hot keys I created. Then, I could read the PDF. Not sure it will work for you, but it’s worth a try if you haven’t already tried it.

I am experiencing exactly the same issue, but I have not found a reliable solution, other than closing and reopening the PDF document, which is obviously very inconvenient. Sometimes, cycling through the Adobe Reader panes by pressing F6 reloads the virtual buffer, but even then, focus typically ends up at the beginning of the document. I believe Word is causing the issue because when it is open, I also have focus problems in web browsers when I alt tab between the browser and Word.

 

Until FreedomScientific resolves the issue, setting temporary placemarkers on web pages and in open PDF documents is our best friend. I do this just before I alt tab away so that I can later find my place quickly by pressing the letter k. I hope this helps.

I'm noticing something I've never had happen before when I used windows 7 and earlier versions. When using windows 10 with Jaws 2018, I am reading a PDF file, if I tab out of that file and go to a word document to write something, and then return to the PDF file, it is blank, and I can't read it. Also when it does ultimately read, the PDF has gone back to the beginning of the document as opposed to the place where I left off.

Any suggestions?
