I have Wiondows 10.

Most of the time Jaws cannot keep up when I type in either Word or Outlook.

Implication is that I almost type in total silence – not hearing what I am doing.

What is the problem and how can it be fixed?

Weird as it may sound, but there is the odd day that the problem does not exist and Jaws speaks letter by letter as I type.

Thanks.

Somewhat surprised this hasn’t’ hit the list yet, but anyway… Firefox 60 is finally out. Both regular and ESr.

So far with the latest Jaws, it seems to be working ok for me. Using the ESR version in my case.

One frustrating thing though, my homepage which is the all posts page of The Old Reader (www.theoldreader.com) is acting kind of funky.

My list of RSS subs isn’t showing up. Nor are the title subscriptions for each post. Since this is my home page and I refer to it all the time to check the news throughout the day, it may be disruptive enough for me at least that I may go back to the ESR 52.X for now. By any chance is anyone else who is a user of The Old Reader dealing with this particular issue?

Otherwise, no other problems that I’ve come across yet. I am noticing that I need to screen refresh and or tab a lot more to get JFW to react or speak, but I think I started to notice that even in the V 52.0.8 or whatever the last version of ESR before V 60.

Anyway, for those who’ve been itching to give Firefox 60 a spin, knock yourselves out.

Hello Shirley,

I do this all the time.  I will go to BARD and download several books to my computer into a Books Download folder which I created.  Later I will transfer them to my Victor Reader.  I have both the older version and the newer version of Victor Reader.  What you need is the Humanware Companion software on your computer.  You can find it on their website.

You can either download directly to the Victor reader with your cord or what I do is pull out my HDSD card.  I put in a higher memory card when I bought my machine so I could download more books.  It is just a matter of pulling your HDSD card out of the Victor Reader and inserting it in your computer when you have the Humanware Companion App open.  It is fairly simple to figure out what to do by playing around with the menu but there is also a good set of directions on their website.  I use the Victor Reader a lot because my phone runs down quick enough without using it to read books all the time.

Hope this helps.

Using Windows 10, do I need an app to unzip books that I download from BARD before transferring them into the Victor Trek from Humanware. I generally read books in my iPhone, but I’m taking a 5 hour plane trip, and I want to have something to do on the long flight and still save my phone battery.

If I need an app to unzip, which one will JAWS work well with?

Jackie,

Glad to hear it was a non-issue for  you.

I do use the Task List in Outlook.  It’s not my primary task list, but I do like it, especially for things that I need to do a week or further out.   The primary way I use it is to go to the list with Control 4.  Recall that I’m still in Outlook 2010, so I’m not sure if it will look different for you.  When you open the task list, focus is at the top of the list on a  line that I believe allows sighted users to click to open a new task. Using my arrow keys, I go through my task list to hear what I have to do.  There are lots of visual ways that sighted users can flag tasks and categorize them.  I supposed this works if JAWS will read the flags, but it’s too cumbersome for me, so I just simply go by name of the task and due date.  At least in my case, they are ordered from top to bottom starting with the most recent due date.  I have a few items with no due date and those are at the very top.

To create a new one, hit alt N and a window will open up. Focus is in the place to name the task.  From here, the only things I add is a start date. Outlook will default the due date to the start date you entered. You can change it if you want.  I also have mine to set a reminder by default.  I think you can set this default option in the Outlook options.  You can also change it by tabbing through the fields.   When a task is due, I get a pop-up in the same window as any meeting alarms.  To clear a task, just hit delete on it in the task list.  The one caveat is if have something on your task list that is related to an email or meeting you have flagged for follow-up.  For example, if I send an email to someone and I want to be sure I get a reply by a certain date, I will go into my sent mail folder and highlight the message. On the context menu, I select the follow-up option, then either pick one of the options or hit custom to set a specific date.  This leaves the message in my Sent mail folder, but also adds it to my Task list.  When you want to delete the task, hitting delete in the task list will delete the task and the message. You’ll get a warning, so don’t panic.  Instead, what you want to do is to highlight the task and select the option to remove the follow-up flag from the context menu. I think it’s the last option on the context menu, so I will hit the application key, then arrow up once to hear “Remove” and hit enter.

Is there something else specific you are having challenges with in Tasks that I may be able to address specifically?   In essence for me, I do get alarms, but I also go into my task list on a regular basis and just scroll through the list to refresh my mind of what’s on it.

I’m getting better as using the calendar by tabbing.  Not sur how helpful I can be there, but happy to help if I can.   I do also have my work email linked to my iPhone and can review my calendar and task list from the phone, which is nice.  I prefer how the phone can give me a simply list of my appointments in a list format so I don’t’ have to go day by day in Outlook.  Window Eyes had a function to do this in Outlook, but it doesn’t seem JAWS does, so I think I’ll be relying on my phone when I’m trying to get an overall feel for my work week.  I do also use the search function in the calendar to find certain events, such as when I cannot recall when my dentist appointment is.  Outlook will pull up the search results in a list format, so I can figure out the date and open the appointment, if needed.

Hi John,
assuming that the files are somewhere in your personal folder, you can do this from the search box in the start menu. Normally when you search for files using the start menu, it only searches the names of files. However, if you filter the search results for documents, then the contents are searched as well. To do this:
1. In the search box, type in a word or phrase as normal.
2. Tab twice to move to the filters list, which is laid out as a row of items.
3. Press right arrow to move to find results in documents, and press enter. The focus returns to the search box, and Jaws reads out the first item in the filtered list of results.

Hi, David. I believe what John is asking is if there is a way to search for files in Windows 10 based on words contained inside files. This used to be possible in Windows XP, and I believe it is one thing we cannot now do since Windows 7. I miss this feature. I used to have a folder of recipes, and I could, for example, search for any of those text files that contain the word pistachio. This was nice, because it made it easy to find anything on the drive. It also used to be easier to change which drive was searched.

unload JAWS, and reload JAWS by pressing windows+r, type jaws followed
by the version you're using) /default, and press enter. now open
notepad, load a text file and issue the read line keystroke again. do
you get the same message?

if you do, navigate to your user settings and see if you have any
setting files for notepad. if you do, delete them, launch Notepad, load
a text file and issue the read line keystroke again. did the message get
announced again?

if so, you'd might want to do a repair.

Subject: Using note pad and read line key stroke

Hello, I'm in note pad reading a document. There are times when I use the
jaws key and up arrow on the num pad and it says "unkown script call to:
reading Jaws version." What is causing this to occur? It doesn't happen in
MS word. Cheers Kevin

Thanks David. I didn’t ask the question but this worked perfectly for me.

Hi John,
assuming that the files are somewhere in your personal folder, you can do this from the search box in the start menu.

Thank you.

Dave...

Highlight the Album or Song you wish to change.
Press the Applications key (or Shift+F10) to bring up a context menu.
Select "Get Info".
Edit as you desire.
Press on OK when done.

You can also change this information in Windows Explorer (I have Windows 7).
Highlight all the songs in your folder.
Again use the App key.
Select properties.
Ctrl+Tab to the Summary page.
Edit those fields that are common to all the songs (e.g. Album, artist,
genre, year).
Press on Okay.

Subject: Changing ITunes data

Hi,

I would like to be able to change information such as name, artist, and
genre for songs and albums on ITunes. I have the latest Windows 10, JFW
2018, and ITunes.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks.
