I unloaded Jaws, went to run and typed in jaws18 /default. Jaws came
back up. I could tell it was the default as it was speaking very slow.

I then went into notepad and using the read line keys the text that Jaws
read prior to the line no longer occurs. So now what?

David Bailes

Hi John,
assuming that the files are somewhere in your personal folder, you can do this from the search box in the start menu. Normally when you search for files using the start menu, it only searches the names of files. However, if you filter the search results for documents, then the contents are searched as well. To do this:
1. In the search box, type in a word or phrase as normal.
2. Tab twice to move to the filters list, which is laid out as a row of items.
3. Press right arrow to move to find results in documents, and press enter. The focus returns to the search box, and Jaws reads out the first item in the filtered list of results.

David.

To find out what version of Windows 10 you are running press Windows Key plus R and then type WINVER. Hopefully it will say Windows 1803. It may say 1709 or 1703 which are the earlier versions.

I had been having windows 10 upgrade problems for a while on my ElBraille.  There wasn’t enough hard drive space to perform the upgrade.  Working with VFO and Elita Group, they finally figured out my problem.  I had a large outlook mailbox file.  They moved the file to D: drive and setup a file redirecting outlook to it.  I believe outlook still thinks it is located on the C: drive, even though it is not.

to get the external drive to boot first for casper you have to go into system bios and change the boot order from the c drive to the usb drive before it can boot to the u s b drive ferst.
i just left mine this way because if you have to re install windows from a dvd disk it would have to be set the same way before the dvd disk will boot.

Hello Shirley,

I do this all the time.  I will go to BARD and download several books to my computer into a Books Download folder which I created.  Later I will transfer them to my Victor Reader.  I have both the older version and the newer version of Victor Reader.  What you need is the Humanware Companion software on your computer.  You can find it on their website.

You can either download directly to the Victor reader with your cord or what I do is pull out my HDSD card.  I put in a higher memory card when I bought my machine so I could download more books.  It is just a matter of pulling your HDSD card out of the Victor Reader and inserting it in your computer when you have the Humanware Companion App open.  It is fairly simple to figure out what to do by playing around with the menu but there is also a good set of directions on their website.  I use the Victor Reader a lot because my phone runs down quick enough without using it to read books all the time.

Hope this helps.

Hi list,

Using Windows 10, do I need an app to unzip books that I download from BARD before transferring them into the Victor Trek from Humanware. I generally read books in my iPhone, but I’m taking a 5 hour plane trip, and I want to have something to do on the long flight and still save my phone battery.

If I need an app to unzip, which one will JAWS work well with?

Thanks for your help.

The Focus 40 Blu current model is referred as the 5th Generation and is a little skinnier than the 4th Generation. The 5th Generation is designed to dock to the El Braille.

The 4th Generation model has rocker switches at each end of the braille display and currently runs firmware 5.71.

the previous model of the Focus has the wizwheel at each end of the braille display.

All models are blutooth compatible. I'm not sure what the current firmware is on the model with the wizwhells.

All models work with JAWS.

If you have further questions please contact off list.

Hi, Shirley. Windows can unzip files natively as stated earlier, but if you are going to unzip more than one file at a time, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to install 7-zip as well. This way, you can select multiple zip files, and unzip them into their own folders all at once. If you should choose to do this, write back, and I’ll give you the steps for performing a multiple unzip with 7-zip.

Thank you, Steve and Pam. Someone had told me that only XP was able to unzip, and that I needed an app. Glad to take that off my list.

I just recently got my Victor Trek, so guess I need to read the user guide more carefully. So, JAWS doesn’t figure into this equasion. Sorry to take up listers’ time. I’m always learning.

You can also download books from BARD directly from your Trek without going through the step of downloading them to your computer and then transferring them to the Trek.

Windows can open ZIP archives natively, no third-party program required.

I updated windows 10 on my ElBraille last week.  Where would I look to see if it is to the 1803 feature you mentioned?

I had been having windows 10 upgrade problems for a while on my ElBraille.  There wasn’t enough hard drive space to perform the upgrade.  Working with VFO and Elita Group, they finally figured out my problem.  I had a large outlook mailbox file.  They moved the file to D: drive and setup a file redirecting outlook to it.  I believe outlook still thinks it is located on the C: drive, even though it is not.

Has anyone updated the ElBraille to Windows 10 1803 Feature Update? Is it even possible?

Hi, Shirley. Windows can unzip files natively as stated earlier, but if you are going to unzip more than one file at a time, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to install 7-zip as well. This way, you can select multiple zip files, and unzip them into their own folders all at once. If you should choose to do this, write back, and I’ll give you the steps for performing a multiple unzip with 7-zip.
