moderated Don't understand IE Download viewer

Van Lant, Robin

Hi,

Lately, I have had several instances where I get an email receipt of an purchase made for an audio book or PDF book.  The email contains a link that, when clicked, seems to open a the download manager tool in Internet Explorer.  I have now also failed in understanding how to navigate this so that I can download my file.  I am quite comfortable downloading a file directly from a webpage, but this acts different and I have maxed out my downloads in a couple instances.

Can some kind person explain the concept here?  Obviously clicking on the link triggers the website to think that I have downloaded it, as it’s counting my failed attempts, but it’s not automatically downloading into my downloads folder, so I must be missing steps.  All I know is that I can hit Control J from within IE to open a viewer of some sort, but I’m struggling from there.

Robin

moderated Folder Naming / Reading Issue With Windows 10 Pro

Mike B. <mb69mach1@...>

Hi All,

Running Windows 10 Pro latest 1803, J16 thru J2018 latest, & latest NVDA.  There's a little so called trick you do called GodMode, and what this is, is a folder you create using the steps below to put all the Windows control panels within a single folder.  First the info, then my problem!

God Mode in Windows 10
Enable God Mode in Windows 10
1. Make sure your system account has administrative privileges
2. Right-click on the Windows 10 desktop and choose New > Folder
3. Name the folder:

GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

 and hit enter/return to make it stick
You can actually name the folder anything you want like NinjaCat mode. Simply replace 'GodMode' before the {....} characters to your liking.

My problem:
When I rename this New folder it remains empty / blank!  Jaws will not read the folder name / title, and even a sighted person does not see a name / title!  But, if you open the folder what ever I've named this folder can be read with the, Alt + D, address bar keystroke, and all the Windows control panels are there.  Does anyone have any idea why this folder, and only this folder, can be named / titled, but not read by a screenreader or by a sighted person?

Any and all advice / help will be greatly appreciated and graciously accepted!  Thanks mooy moocho.

Take care.  Mike.  Go Dodgers!

unload JAWS, and reload JAWS by pressing windows+r, type jaws followed
by the version you're using) /default, and press enter. now open
notepad, load a text file and issue the read line keystroke again. do
you get the same message?

if you do, navigate to your user settings and see if you have any
setting files for notepad. if you do, delete them, launch Notepad, load
a text file and issue the read line keystroke again. did the message get
announced again?

if so, you'd might want to do a repair.

Hello, I’m still having the static problem. The place I got the laptop had it
for a while and were tolc by a organization that works with BVI individuals
when it comes to computers. They suggested the Jaws and Openbook be uninstalled
and reinstalled. Well the PC shop updated Windows 10 and the static still
existed. They then reinstalled Jaws2018 and Openbook and the static still
occurs. I’m not sure if they uninstalled and then reinstalled or just
reinstalled. Either way it still has static. They felt it was a problem with
Jaws2018 and Narrator. They are now going to setup a different laptop with
windows7. Talk about going backwards. Does anyone use an Acer laptop with
Windows 10, Jaws2018 and Openbook? If so is the laptop using a Real tech sound

moderated Jaws recently crashing with Chicken Nugget

Cristóbal

Hello list,

So recently, I’ve been encountering an issue with the Chicken Nugget twitter client (portable version) and Jaws. Starting on Friday, as I’m down arrowing through the timeline of tweets, Jaws will just crash on me. Sometimes, I can bring Jaws back with the insert plus alt plus W command, but often, I have to resort to launching NVDA and killing the lingering Jaws processes in the task manager to then be able to bring Jaws back.

As mentioned above, this is with the portable Chicken Nugget installer that I’ve been already running for a while. My Jaws is current and while this random crashing hadn’t occurred with earlier versions of Jaws, this issue only started popping up last week. I’ve been running the latest JFW update shortly after it was put out in the middle of April.

I reached out to the CN dev (Accessible Apps) and he confirmed what I figured, that there was nothing on the app’s end that has changed to suddenly caused this.

Are any other Jaws users dealing with anything similar when in CN?

Thanks,

Cristobal

Are you trying to make a folder on the desk top to store word documents?

Hi!

Actually, I installed 1803 Windows 10, and it works great with JAWS 2018.

I use Time Line, a new feature a lot, and Near Share works great. The Twitter app works much better in this new 1803 version of win10 as well.

I don’t know where you heard that from, but JAWS 2018 works very well with the new version of Windows. Even Edge works great, and Chrome browser works even better with JAWS in the new win10 version.

Is anyone using the backup program Second Copy successfully with JAWS? It says it is running in the background, and it is supposed to be in the system tray, but I am not finding it with JAWS. In order to configure it, it seems that I will need to be able to access the icon for the program in the system tray, but I cannot find it.

We have tried this both on Windows 7 and 10 computers.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Exactly, and for those who work with desktop computers
turning off the screen certainly is an option, but using
Screen Shade which, by the way, is the name of the feature
(screen curtain is what Apple calls it) is much easier.

Also, David, as you found out the trick is not to press Jaws
Key+F11 even if you somehow simultaneously press the
spacebar as well but to press Jaws Key+Spacebar first and
then follow with the other key, F11 in this case
(Printscreen also works). This is called a "layered
keystroke" in Jaws and there are a bunch of these which are
very useful, here just a few:

Jaws Key+Spacebar followed by:

A = text analyser

C = clipboard text viewer.

H = Jaws speech history (super useful)

J = Search for Jaws commands

L = Lock the keyboard

O = Jaws OCR, you need to follow the 'O" with other letters
like "s" for OCR current screen, "w" OCR current Windows
etc.

R = Research It

S = Speech on demand/Mute

Z = Default user mode (this uses only Jaws default settings)

Most of these keystrokes are toggles, e.g. Jaws Key+Spacebar
and L will lock the keyboard, pressing the same key
combination again will unlock it.

Sieghard

Hi, Dave. Closing the lid of the laptop won't work if you're

prevent others from seeing what you're working on. Also, my

lowering the brightness doesn't dim it sufficiently for no

This may sound snarky, but I promise it's not meant that way. Chrome is

just another browser. It does what they all do,  more or less, depending

on what you want out of a browser. Web pages are navigated in much the

same way as is done in IE or Firefox. You can view browsing and

downloads histories, set and edit bookmarks, decide what external

programs will be opened when certain filetypes are downloaded, etc.,

etc. If there are any specific access keys related to Chrome when used

with JAWS, they can probably be found by looking in the index of help

for the fversion of JAWS being used. I just happen to have 18 running,

and when I looked in said help index, I found a casual mention of

Chrome, which to me indicates there's nothing special about the way it

and JAWS work together.
