Thanks. This worked and my desk top now contains 2 listings of JAWS. One says JAWS 12 and the new one just says 'JAWS'.
From this JAWS desk top icon, I did alt plus enter for creating my new hot key and arrowed down to the apply button.
I unloaded JAWS and reloaded with the new hot key so, at least for now, I'm all set. Mitch

Hi, I had a Hot Key assigned to JAWS 13 and I managed to do this via the icon on the desk top. This is a major whoop for me.
Now I notice that somehow the desktop icon for JAWS 13 has gone missing.
Of course, I don't know how to remedy this.
Do I need to install from the CD? Or is there a simple way to add JAWS 13 to the desk top?
This is an XP Home O S.

Mitch,

If you'd rather have it say JAWS 13 then do the following:

Arrow to the desktop icon
Press f2
Edit the name
Press Enter

Re: [Bulk] JAWS 13.0.638 - Was [Bulk] Outlook 2007

Cristóbal

Dave,

Yes, I used the 32 bit version. This happened to me once before with one of
the 12 or maybe 13 releases, I can't remember right now. I even downloaded
the .exe file a second time to be sure it wasn't my first download. In both
instances, I got stuck on the "please wait while Jaws updates your system"
or something page and get the endless cherps. It will get stuck at the 96%
level.

Both times this has happened, I've been able to restart my computer with no
issues and when I check the about option in the Jaws menu, it will show the
updated version, but I'll notice weird behavior with certain commands and
whatnot. This time though, if I unloaded Jaws using the insert+f4 command
and try to reload it, Jaws would not come up. Thankfully I still have JFW 11
on my system so I just went ahead and used that to the uninstall process for
13 and did the reinstall with the executable file.

The update always goes through fine after I do the initial uninstall and
reinstallation.

Just one of those things I suppose.

Chris,

Interesting you point out the install problem. I downloaded the update (as I

do each time) and had to install twice before it came up. Then just to be
safe I did a repair. I noticed that during the first two installs the
default "valium voice" was not there, but in the repair it finally came on
board.

Not the usual seamless install of an upgrade, and perhaps the executable
posted to the web is somewhat corrupted.

I used the 32-bit version. Did you?

I had an issue with the install where it got hung up at 96% completed. I
ended up having to uninstall version 13 and do a reinstall. This happened to
me once before. Really odd. Also, I'm noticing that Jaws is a tad sluggish
again in Firefox (Google Reader). Similar to how it was in the various JFW
12 releases. I haven't come across the not selected issue with e-mails, but
I'm only running Outlook 2003.

My bad experience was with a web site where I had the "Remember me on this

With this last update of JAWS (and with no other versions before) I heard a
reading of the lines of one of the underlying script files read on and on

completely wrong. The offending text string was no where on the screen -- it

was just being fed into the synthesizer.

Anyone else seen this behavior? If so please report to FS.

Re: JAWS 13 Hot Key

Adrian Spratt

Mitch, I think this will work:

1. Go to the start menu, then programs, then press j until JAWS 13 is
spoken.

2. Press enter on JAWS 13, then arrow up or down until you hear simply,
"JAWS." do not press enter.

3. Press the applications key, which is to the left of the right control
key.

4. Arrow up (on my system just once) until you hear "Properties." Press
enter.

5. Here you'll be in the shortcut dialog that you may have encountered when
the JAWS icon was still on the desktop.

6. Tab to the blank edit field where you type in the letter you want to use
for the shortcut. Do not press control or alt, which are assigned by
default.

7. Press enter.

Note. I've learned to skip the OK button when creating a shortcut. For some
reason, I, and others, have found that more tabbing can undo the shortcut
you chose. In its instructions, FS also says to press enter right away.

That should do it. I can't test to confirm that the icon will appear along
with the shortcut, since I haven't lost mine, but I don't think the shortcut
could work without it. Would you let us know either way?

Re: JAWS 13 Hot Key

Kimber Gardner

Go to jaws in the programs list and right click. One of the options
you'll hear as you arrow down is send to with a submenu. One of the
choices is desktop which will put a shortcut on your desktop.

Once you have it there it will read something like shortcut to jaws,
so you will probably want to rename it. Do this by right clicking on
the shortcut and choosing rename.

Hope this helps.

Re: [Bulk] Adobe Reader X

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

How well does X do with long documents? The performance of 7,8, and 9
has been truly awful, forcing the user to choose between either
continually paging down or dealing with a balky, slow, crash-prone
application (I haven't compared notes with sighted users on this issue).
I've been using that little reader that came with Thunder; it lacks
fancy features, but is rock steady.

If you're having problems with adobe X try the following;

1, open adobe X,

2, press ctrl+k=preferences,

3, now press the letter "g"=general,

4, now tab and
Uncheck,
Enable Protected Mode at startup

Hello.

They have just upgraded me at work to Adobe Reader X from Adobe
Reader
9.

Now when I load a document, I can't read anything.

When I do a down arrow it just says blank.

It is not an OCR thing since I could read the same document with
Adobe
Reader 9.

Any ideas if there are particular settings under preferences that I
need
to set in order for me to be able to read .PDF documents?

I am using Jaws 12.1169.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Eric.

RJ,

Everyone is a beta tester for at least the first 3 months of a new release.

Okay, I'm cynical. Actually the new version does pre-release about a month
in advance and everyone is welcome to download and report bugs. However
given the short time I really don't think those bug reports ever make it to
the first release. I suspect that these bugs get fixed in the succeeding
monthly updates. Okay, cynical again, but not quite so much, eh?

Other than that if you want to be a Beta tester for real, you need to
contact FS directly and let them know you're interested. Then be prepared to

devote a lot of time to wringing out as many quirks as possible, with as
many applications as possible, in as many operating environments as possible

during the testing cycles, and report every single thing you find that
either works or does not work.

If I ever retire and have nothing to do, I'll volunteer.

Dave, Dave, Dave.
There are two glaring flaws in your theory the worse of which is "if the
developers will resolve all the bugs found". (LOLLOLLOLLOL)
I have worked on systems under the theory that 300 monkeys can accomplish
the same amount of work as one monkey working 300 days - God, what a
disaster.
I do, however, concur with your theory on the odd number releases being the
better ones.

Cy,

As cynical as I can be, I do think that JAWS 13 is a much better product
than 12. Goes back to my original theory that only odd-numbered versions of
JAWS are worth the price. Too bad we can't purchase an SMA that follows that

pattern.

Sure, 3 months is plenty of time. There's an old adage that if one writer,
writing one page per day can produce a 600-page book in 600 days, we then
can extrapolate and say that 600 writers can produce the same book in 1 day,

correct?

So goes Beta testing. As long as every beta tester is testing something
different in the code, then the more testers, the better. And if they are
all working 8 hours a day to dedicated testing (and not just playing around
with ResearchIt) 100 testers can put in 100 x 8 x 90 hours of testing. A
whopping 72,000 hours. If that really happened and the developers resolved
all the bugs found, we would have a very stable product, indeed.

But of course there are likely fewer testers, fewer hours per day, and much
more overlap.
