Jaws does not speak the bottom of the screen

Delaunay Christophe

Hi all,

I just plugged in a new screen to my laptop. This screen seems quite larger than the laptop’s embedded screen.

In order to accommodate this, windows adjusted its screen resolution. Since Jaws became really sluggish, I decided to end it and relaunch it. The screen reader was a little bit more responsive but since it was not as good as before I plugged in the new screen, I decided to reboot the computer.

After restarting, jaws is nearly as responsive as before, except for the few bottom lines of the screen. Although it speaks the icons of the taskbar while I navigate through it, it does not braille them like it did before. And, in my favorite text editor, a few lines of text at the bottom of the screen are simply said as “blank”. In order to know what these lines contain, I need to scroll down a little bit and go back with the up arrow for Jaws to really speak their content. A problem for the end of the document.

Did anyone else have such a problem please?

BTW, the computer is powered by Windows 7 64-bit Entreprise Edition SP1 and Jaws version is 2018.1802.78 ILM.

Many thanks in advance for any advice. Have a nice day. Chris D

Converting audoble audio books from pc to sd card

Val Paul

Hi!

Can anyone tell me how to convert an audoble audio book from the audoble app on pc to sd card?

I also have a USB cd drive, which can copy books on to mp3 cd discs.

Thanks.

Val.

is this a bug or a freature of jaws?

mike mcglashon

Hi guys:

I’ve noticed something peculiar with jaws regarding which desktop I am on with win10 and jaws2018.

It seems when I have multiple virtual desktops open,

When I am in desktop 1,

And if I have a file explorer (folder window) open,

When in the actual destktop where the icons are, I hit insert-t,

Instead of saying”desktop 1” it reads the title of the open folder window instead.

Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

Please advise further.

Yours truly,

Mike m.

Hi Stanley,

Check out the note below, & see if this gets you what you want.

From: Marquette, Ed

One way is to switch the speech scheme.  If you switch to proof reading (attributes) you will hear "cap" instead of the pitch increase.
The down side is that you also get attribute changes; however, you get a voice change, not announcement of "bold" "underline" and so on.
One could modify that scheme so it just says cap, but I've never taken the time to do that.

if you're looking to try something different, I've heard the best
uninstaller is call geek uninstaller. You can get this uninstaller
at www.geekuninstaller.com

When you down load the file it will come in a zip folder so you don't
have to install this because it's portable. just use 7zip to
uncompressed it and start using it.

it is also compatible with all screen readers and versions of Windows.

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good uninstall program? I know windows has
one, but as far as I am aware the standard windows uninstaller tends
to leave parts of files on your PC. I used to use Revo uninstall
which uninstalls programs but then scans for left over traces of the
program and then removes those two, but it looks like this doesn't
work with jaws, so I was just wondering if anyone's has any
alternative suggestions which work well with jaws?

Afternoon,

I used Quicken successfully for years. I had lost my install and purchased the newest version that turn out to be an accessibility nightmare.

In looking about, what I ended up doing was purchasing Money Talks the APH product that self-voices or works with JAWS, but have not tried it with NVDA, but will and report back. To be honest, since I made that purchase I have not given it the time I should. However it does allow for download of bank account information and lets one do basic checkbook and savings account management.

Your note made me think to look at Quick Books accessibility and the search turned up an older article at AFB’s Access World. The link is at:

http://www.afb.org/afbpress/pubnew.asp?DocID=aw150502

It was promising but dated 2014. It mentioned the joint work done by Intuit and  Blind Spot . Reference to Blind Spot is at:

Clearly Quick Books is more than I need and its pricey.  At the Blind Spot I went to their store to see about the scripts and training materials

You can purchase the following there.

QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2018, My Blind Spot JAWS scripts for Quickbooks, and Support Materials

$525.00

Under FAQs I found:

14) Where can I get the NVDA version of the scripts?

NVDA QuickBooks Accessibility Initiative

Seems a lot to keep my checking account balanced.

Subject: Personal Accounting Package accessible with Jaws

Is anyone having any success using personal accounting packages with Jaws.  I currently use Microsoft Money and that software has been discontinued by Microsoft.  Recently my bank, TD Bank, has made major changes to their online system and I can no longer export bank transactions to my MS Money.

I heard that Quicken is not accessible and I tried Cash Manager and I really do not like it.  I have 23 years of transactions that I do not want to lose.

Thanks,

Mario

if you're looking to try something different, I've heard the best
uninstaller is call geek uninstaller. You can get this uninstaller at
www.geekuninstaller.com

When you down load the file it will come in a zip folder so you don't
have to install this because it's portable. just use 7zip to
uncompressed it and start using it.

it is also compatible with all screen readers and versions of Windows.

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good uninstall program? I know windows has one,
but as far as I am aware the standard windows uninstaller tends to
leave parts of files on your PC. I used to use Revo uninstall which
uninstalls programs but then scans for left over traces of the program
and then removes those two, but it looks like this doesn't work with
jaws, so I was just wondering if anyone's has any alternative
suggestions which work well with jaws?

I turned contracted braille off and tried these keystrokes and then backspaced. I heard space marker, not the at sign. Am I missing something?

Excel freezing

Tewai Halatau

Hello all. I am using Excel 2016 with the latest JAWS. I cannot quite pin-point when Excel started freezing, but it has been happening for a few months now. I am working away in my spreadsheet for about 5 minutes, and then suddenly I cannot move any where, Excel refuses to close, and I usually have to restart everything by rebooting.
It is driving me crazy, since Excel was one of my most favourite apps. Now I fear opening it, and I am seriously thinking of switching to Sheets.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Tewai

George,

Thanks for the reminder. I usually do the entire string, Alt, h, o, r and then type. But it's sure hard to remember all those single-letter  sequences. Also, Alt, then h, o, m will bring up the reorder list.

Have the sheet active

Alt h o

Arrow down to rename sheet and hit enter

It will be a blank with nothing said and just type in the name of the sheet and hit enter

And it is renamed

You can check by then doing control shift s and a list of sheets come up for that workbook and you will see the new name for that sheet therre

OK a real dumb one but did they change how you rename sheets in Excel 2016? I thought you changed it in the format group which I am not finding unless lack of caffeine is the root cause of this mystery. Anyway how does one rename a sheet in Excel 2016?
