Thanks, Steve. You have been very helpful. My problem didn't actually get solved, but it wasn't because suggestions from everybody weren't right or helpful. As Bill said, Windows side by side, stacked, and cascade are all unavailable, so I think I have tried all I can for resizing browser window that is open.

Every version of Windows back to at least XP,maybe even further, has a program called Task Scheduler. You can certainly add a task to shut the machine down in there. Starting it again, though, I don't think is possible. In fact, I'd go out on a limb to say it is absolutely positively not possible. Think about it: How would a device that's quiet, not taking power, not responsive to any stimuli either internal or external, know, or be told by some external force, that it's time to turn on?

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. 2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. I've had in general better luck with responses/follow ups via Twitter. That said though, I do have to agree that tech support is pretty crappy.
Giving your paying customers the silent treatment even if it's a simple acknowledgement is if anything taking away value. He can nerd out all he wants, but how can people have confidence in his products if they don't know whether their problems can/will be fixed or addressed or if the product will continue to be supported, etc.

Skeduler for turning computer on and off

I figured it out. In order for Windows Side By Side to work, you must first have two windows open. These might be two Office documents.

 

1. Open both documents.

2. As Sieghard says in an earlier post, open the System Tray, and look for the Notification Chevron, and press ENTER.

3. Arrow down to Windows Side By Side, and press ENTER.

4. Now the two documents, or whatever windows you have open should be displayed side by side.

I think the statement "it's easy to do" is very subjective and it's not something I would ever tell somebody without first knowing what their abilities are.
Maybe from your point of view and level of knowledge it is easy to do, but many of us on these lists are often above average in knowledge and experience. You do, however, need to ask people like Val at what level they are. I don't know Val, but from reading his messages and some of the replies he received I gather that he is in Scottland and that he is an older gentleman who may not necessarily have been a computer user or at least not a blind computer user for that long. If this is the case then installing Windows from scratch or even making the installation media might be beyond his abilities. Personally I find it quite easy as well and as a Jaws user for 29 years NVDA just does not cut it and I might as well use Narrator if I need to do an installation without sighted help. In any case, if the speed of Val's laptop is not satisfactory and too slow for what he is willing to put up with then he will probably need to ask somebody else to help him with this or, if that is not possible, he may have to go to a store where somebody can do it for him and hopefully without charging an arm and a leg.
