Re: Providing Remote Support to Sighted Users
Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>
I assume it is quite likely that there is a Jaws shortcut on the desktop and in my opinion it’s not that much to ask from a sighted user to click that or to tell him to type Windows Key+R and type “Jaws18” or “Jaws2018” and press enter and to then tell him the few mouse clicks he or she would have to do to launch the tandem session. I understand some people use Team Viewer and while I have used it in terms of getting support people access, I have not used it to gain access and don’t know about how accessible it is once you are connected. I know most remote solutions like GoToMeeting and so on never used to be accessible.

Good morning, Is anyone aware of an accessible tool that will allow a JAWS user to provide remote assistance to other sighted non-JAWS users? I am currently set up with JAWS Tandem Direct, but it does not make sense to me to ask a sighted user who requires my assistance, and knows absolutely nothing about JAWS to go through the process of launching JAWS on their machine just to acquire an access code for a Tandem session, and then having to explain to them how to shutdown JAWS when the session is complete, etc.
Is there a more mainstream utility, such as Windows Remote Assistance through which I can gain access to their workstation and then just launch JAWS myself? Note that JAWS has already been installed on the 75-100 workstations that I could potentially need to access. I just want to find a way that the end-user does not have to launch JAWS in order for me to provide real-time remote assistance.
Keep in mind that I am referring to real-time assistance, where I take control of the end-user’s workstation, under their existing credentials and login session, not to be confused with remoting into their computer via Windows Remote Desktop, etc.
Any thoughts or feedback that you might can share would be greatly appreciated.

Team Viewer has been known to work in these situations. It’s not consistent all the time though. There is also an application called Zoom, that is fully accessible, but I think the user would have to have access to it on their computer as well.

Right, I’m set up with JAWS Remote Access and Tandem Direct, but as I stated, I’m not looking for RDP-type functionality. Well, one awesome improvement with Jaws 2018 is the fact that you can now do OCR on any image file, not just on PDF files opened in Acrobat Reader any more. All you have to do is bring up your context menu when you are on an image file in Windows Explorer and press “J” or arrow to “Recognize with Jaws” and press enter. To me this alone makes 2018 a worthwhile update.

Help with AOL mail
Elaine Young <hidden_spring@...>
Hi all, I have a second email address that is through Verizon which was changed to AOL about a year ago. Last month I was to respond to a security update on that AOL account and missed the info until it was too late (I rarely use that email address). So now I am not receiving any email from that account. It appears to me I need to update my security on IMAPS/popups. I am clueless about all this. Below is what I've found on the AOL site.
"Find the IMAP/POP server and port settings in your email application. These settings can usually be found under an account settings menu in your application. " I use Thunderbird 52.5.0. I can't figure out where to find accounts and the security changes I have to make. I don't know when to tab, enter or arrow. I use Jaws 18 with Windows 10. Can someone very simply walk me through the process? Thanks, Elaine

Hi all, I just had a thought and wondered if it made any difference.
I have a program that has a pop up that the mouse, the invisible curser and the touch curser cannot read. The only way to see what is in the pop up window is to use the OCR on the window. Sometimes I know that the results are lying to me. They are just wrong. Spaces missing between words, numbers missing, numbers miss recognized. etc.… Does the screen resolution play a part in the OCR results on a window? If so what should I set them to so the OCR is accurate? This program is currently on a laptop if that makes any difference.

I have a user that is running into problems with the latest version of Outlook and the latest version of JAWS. The user views their contacts as business cards so that it reads the contact’s information. However, as the user moves through the list of contacts, JAWS reads the contact the user just moved off of and not the currently selected contact. For example, when the user is on Contact 1 and moves to Contact 2, JAWS reads Contact 1 even through Contact 2 is highlighted. When the user moves to Contact 3, JAWS reads contact 2. Any ideas would be helpful.

Hi! The text that JAWS extracts from the image, is put in a window for you, and you can use all reading functions, and it is an HTML Window, so you can press H for heading, and so on. Also, you can copy text from that window. Once you have JAWS scan the image, the window with the text comes up and you are put right in that window. If you want to save that text, you have to copy the text, and paste it into Notepad, Word, or any editor, and save the document as usual using the Word program or editor. The work-around was to type the formula as text and then edit the cell and put the equals sign at the front. Somebody found out that if you turn autocomplete for formulas off this fixes this problem and it did. Apart from that I must say that I have no issues whatsoever with Excel 2016 and Jaws 2018 on both Windows 7 and Windows 10, Outlook currently is also as good as it hasn’t been in 3 or 4 months. I rarely use Word so can’t comment, but I more or less live in Excel and Outlook. I should mention that on one of my older PC’s (about 6 years old) Outlook becomes sluggish if I type a longer email, Alt+tabbing away from it into another program and back usually helps, but it’s only on that one computer.

hello; I just went to MSWord 2016, and again, there's a office update. open word, alt+f=file, now press, the letters, d&r, enter on update now! not sure if office2013 has updates.

well; not to defend freedomscientific, but, the office2016 and perhaps the office2013, keeps updating, which evidently breaks something in jaws. in fact, I just had a office 2016 update on Tuesday of this week. it seems the issues are whith the latest version of office. 2010,and 2007 seem to be fine.

Brenda,
This is very disheartening. With the number of us having this problem, it would seem to me JAWS is what needs to be fixed. On another computer I have Office 2010 and this does not happen. Wondering if anyone on list has received any assistance from VFO or if they are putting folks off to MS accessibility desk.

I have been experiencing this same problem for a while. I am completely frustrated. I called VFO and they had no suggestions other than call MicroSoft accessibility desk. I have not done that but don't see what they could do. Since moving to Windows 10 I have been extremely frustrated with JAWS in several applications. Most of them are things I can work around some but Excel is the worse with it stopping speaking or taking 20 to 30 seconds or more to repeat what I typed. It also stops speaking when I am moving around a spreadsheet to check figures and mark things off.
I have been working with JAWS since sometime in the mid-90s. I have never been so frustrated as I am now. Hoping to hear that someone has unlocked the secret to at least Excel. Also frustrated with no speech during spell check.

Yes, exactly like that here. This is getting very annoying. I am flying back to NY today but will call VFO tomorrow or when time permits. I am sure they are well aware of this issue as it has been widely reported. Others? Has anyone had a formal response from VFO?

I’m experiencing this issue with jaws 17, 18 and 2018 with excel 2013. If I alt plus tap, jaws is responsive. It’s to the point where I have to end the the test via the task manager for excel and reopen excel to continue working again. Reinstalling jaws does not help, I need a solution as well!

Re: J2018
Hi, Regarding Windows 7 or 8.x to 10: I’d strongly advise folks to get a free license before the offer expires, downgrade, then upgrade later. Cheers, Joseph

Hello Becky, I would suggest that you stick with jaws 18, 2018 seems far more resource heavy and slow to me as compared to jaws18,and there arent any improvements in 2018 that arent in 18 that you could make use of in win7 anyway. as to win7 to win10? stick with 7 as long as you can, I have been using win10 because I have no choice, but given one, would go back to 7 in a heartbeat. hth.

Continuing Problems With Navigating List Of Contacts In An E-mail Group
Tom Behler
Hello, everyone.
I am continuing to have problems navigating the list of contacts within several e-mail groups I have created.
This problem has emerged within the past few months, and I keep hoping that the issue will be fixed with a new Jaws update.
Basically, as I try to navigate the list of contacts in an e-mail group, I get stuck on the first entry, and cannot arrow down through the rest of the list in the usual way.
If anyone has found a work-around for this issue, please let me know.
I’m using the latest build of Jaws 2018, Windows 7, and Outlook 2016 with Office 365 here.
