List Rules

When:
Friday, 1 December 2017
12:00am to 1:00am
(GMT-05:00) America/New York

Description:
The following is the current version of the JFW Mailing List policies. These are sent out monthly, and also available from:

http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies

**List Policies**

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated.

2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject.

4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind.

5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration.

6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently.

As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io

Re: Selecting Tables in HTML or pdf

CathyAnne,

Thanks for the F8 key stroke. I didn’t know about it.

Unfortunately it is not working and keeping the formatting in the table structure.

I tried pasting into word and into excel and I had no table in word and all the information pasted into column A of the worksheet.

Bummer.

I had some one help me recreate it.

It is one of those convoluted cell phone quotes and they are trying to be sneeky about all the hidden charges.

That irks me. I like to crunch the numbers and make that math work like they say it will.

This is easy with JAWS for Windows.

  • Focus in the table (Make sure you’re focused at the top of the table with the virtual cursor)
  • Press F8 to select the entire table
  • Copy the table to your clipboard
  • Paste it into Excel

I tried this with several tables and received mixed results with the F8. If the F8 doesn’t select the whole table (read selected text with JAWS KEY-SHFIT-NUMPAD 2), you can also use standard Windows text selection command. JAWS alerts you when you reach the end of the table.

Pasting into Excel worked well for me when I tested these steps.

Hi Laura,

Are you speaking of the list view in the “Open” or “Save As” dialog? If your documents aren’t all showing, it could be the “File of Type” combo box.

When you open the dialog, press TAB once to focus on the “File Type” combo box and use UP and DOWN ARROW to insure you have the right document type selected. The default should be Word Document .docx.

When you change the file type in that combo box, it affects the documents displayed in the list view.

Hello,

Using Windows 10, Jaws 18 & MS Word 2016 ……

I plugged in my headphone to my laptop.  Jaws asked what type of headphone and gave me a list of six to choose from; headphones, headphones with microphone, headset, etc.  I pressed enter on headphones and the headphones worked.  I opened a file, typed a few notes, and closed that file.  I then got on the internet and did a few Google searches.  When I got off the internet and went back to my documents I noticed Some of my folders and files are missing.  I checked the recycle bin and they are not there.  I also shut down the computer and turned it back on and they are still not there.

NOTE:  If I arrow through the  folders and files in my documents there are quite a few that are not being read to me but when I press the first letter of a file or folder that’s missing Jaws will say the name of that specific file or folder.

I’m not very tech savvy and have no idea why this would happen …… Would somebody please help?

Perfect, works exactly as you describe. This is an easy work-around and one which doesn't cause too much inconvenience otherwise.
Interesting how auto complete causes so many issues since Outlook has issues with it as well or at least had in the past weeks.

Hi Sieghard & all,

Good news! I found a fix for the issue of Excel 2016 crashing when typing a formula while running a screen reader.

Here's what to do...

1. in Excel, go to File > Options (Alt +F, T).
2. Arrow down to "Formulas".
3. Tab till you hear Jaws say "Working with Formulas, Formula AutoComplete, checked", and press the spacebar to uncheck the formula autocomplete.
4. Tab to the OK button and press enter. Now try to type a formula, and all should be well!

I found an article on the web where someone was having this issue with Excel on the Mac, and he tried turning off a number of options, and found that an autocomplete option was causing his issues. The options were a little different, but I went through all the autocomplete options, and tried the formula autocomplete and was so excited to find that it worked!

Good luck all.

Russell

a few things first.
make sure you have loaded the default .jss file. if you don't changes you make will only apply to the application jss no t the default one.

if you want the control, alt, windows keys etc. to silence there is a work around.
in the keyboard labeler you can not mute them. but if you change the label name and delete them there will be nothing there for jaws to speak.

I’m trying to get JAWS to stop voicing Control, Shift, Alt and tab each time I hit them, especially when alt tabbing through open programs. I followed the directions I had seen here to search for Label in the settings center and found the list of keys with their status. I changed the setting for Tab to Mute, but it’s still saying it. Also, when I try to change the setting for Control, Shift and Alt, I get a pop-up saying that I cannot mute these because they are used in combination with other keys. What am I missing?

Hi Carol,

I don't know which method you're using to make WinAmp your default player, but below are the steps I use to set my default programs:

Try the following:

1. Go to the control panel, then find, Default Programs Link, & press enter.

2. Tab to, Set Your Default Programs Link, & press enter.  Wait a few seconds for the list to populate.

3. Tab 1 time into, List View, & you should have a list of programs.  Arrow down to, WinAmp, & tab to, Set This Program As Default button, & press the spacebar.

4. Tab to, Choose Defaults for this Program button, & press the spacebar.

5. Press the spacebar on the, Select All, checkbox to check it, tab to the, Save button, & press the spacebar.

6. Tab to the, Okay button, press the spacebar, & Press, Alt + F4, to close.

Take care.  Mike.  Go Dodgers!

Hello. JawsKey+WindowsKey+f4 doesn’t work and JAWS doesn’t restart. If I start Narrator and kill the Jaws process I can restart Jaws. The problem is Narrator is too verbose in the Task Manager.

Just starting Jaws may not be the solution if Jaws has crashed and is displaying some error message. If that doesn't work you can definitely try to simply launch Jaws either using the Run command as described, Windows+R then type Jaws18 or Jaws2018 and press enter or you can of course set a shortcut key combination like Control+Alt+J.

I usually just do a run line command (windows key plus letter r) then type the word jaws followed by version number with no spaces between the word jaws and version number. So to start most current version, the run dialogue box would read following line:
Jaws2018

Once typed simply hit enter and it is up and running.

insert+f4 and press the spacebar, then control+alt+j or however you
insert+want
to start JAWS.

What is the best way to regain speech if JAWS goes silent? IN later
versions of Window Eyes, I could just hit the launch hotkeys of
Control Alt W and WE would restart, but this doesn't' work with JAWS.
It seems that Control Alt J may be bringing up the JAWS home screen
(or whatever it's called) and then I can hit Alt F4 to close it, but
is this the best way?

Re: best way to regain speech if JAWS is silent?

Michael Mote

It really depends on why JAWS stopped talking.  If there is an error, JAWS can sometimes restart itself, and begin talking after about 60 seconds.  If it is more serious than that, you may consider starting Narrator to figure out what’s happening.  Perhaps, you can get enough speech to determine if you have an error message on the screen.  In Windows 10, you launch Narrator by pressing Control Windows and enter all together.  Hope this is helpful!

Have you tried turning off key echo in the set-up wizard?

I’m trying to get JAWS to stop voicing Control, Shift, Alt and tab each time I hit them, especially when alt tabbing through open programs. I followed the directions I had seen here to search for Label in the settings center and found the list of keys with their status.  I changed the setting for Tab to Mute, but it’s still saying it.  Also, when I try to change the setting for Control, Shift and Alt, I get a pop-up saying that I cannot mute these because they are used in combination with other keys.  What am I missing?
