Re: Is There a JFW2018 Home Use Version?

Hello Dani:

I hadThe Jaws 2018 release downloaded to my desktop pc a few days ago from FS(via tandem), and when it starts, it does say "home use". so I guess that there is a home use version. As to the call to FS, it's probably your best option for a knowledgeable answer.

Sincerely,

Hi, Everyone.
When I checked my serial number at FS's site, it showed that I have
one upgrade remaining before I can renew my SMA.

I'm using JFW17 Home.

I tried upgrading to JFW2018 and both the Tandem and Non-tandem

Would anyone on list know if there's an upgrade for the Home version?
I'll call FS Monday to check with them, but was wondering if a list

ESR stands for "Extended Support Release based on an official release of
Firefox for desktop for use by organizations including schools,
universities, businesses and others who need extended support for mass
deployments." for us blind users, the advantage is that ESR will
continue to receive security updates without user interface changes,
thus maintaining screen reader accessibility.

Rick,

Using Firefox, it is clearly possible to get to the download link after
selecting a book.  Note that the book download link is above the submit
button rather than after it.

However, when you follow that download link you get to the "check out" page
where it clearly states:

You must be logged in to checkout.

You have to sign up as a patron in order to download anything.

The How to become a patron file makes that pretty clear.

Right now the employee they have who is knowledgeable about screen readers
and about JAWS is on medical leave and they don't know when he will be back
again.  So if any of you are familiar with this particular web site and
maybe, by chance, might have downloaded a book from it, would you please be
so kind as to access it and figure out how it can be done using JAWS?  You
don't have to sign in to do this-at least not for the help I am asking for.
Just go to the web page and find the "Online Library Access," link and hit
the Enter key.  Then if you just find any book, try to figure out how to
get
to the page where the book can be downloaded.  When you get to the page
that
has the book description, you'll see there is no direct link to download
the
book.  There is a "downloads," link but it will not take you to the
"download," page for the book you wish to download.  Instead, it takes you
to the page where there are various things that can be downloaded, such as
the AudioBook Ministries tax summary and various other things not at all
related to the book you wish to download.  When you find a book, just tell
me how to use JAWS to get to the book's download page.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi,

You make a choice of 32 or 64 bit and download that one. The pro or home version is in the same download and your version is activated by your serial number. One thing that I might mention is that your one SMA would only get you version 18 since you are running version 17. You would need another SMA to get version 2018. I hope this is helpful.

Dani,

The upgrade is for jfw18. If you want to upgrade to jfw2018, you need
two upgrades and youhave to pay for it.

Jfw2018 is a professional version on your pc because it is a demo
version and demo's are professional.

So you can pgrade to jfw18 for free. The 2018 will cost you money.
If you have a license for 2018, it will be a home version.

Kind regards, Marten

If you are using win10:
Microsoft has changed the console window. I hope screenreaders can
support this in future.
You can use the old stile and then the screenreader will read as normal.
Open a console window and press alt-space.
Go to properties and tab to the option to use the old console.

Wanted inputs on the following basic problems with Word.
1. While I wish to make the headings bold or underlined, it sometimes
happens that the subsequent text also appears in bold or underlined

JAWS repeatedly says 'Bold on'. Also if we wish to read a document,
how to effectively ascertain whether the document is underlined or

Hi all!  I have a quick question regarding what happens when you set JAWS to start automatically.  When you set this up, does that mean that a key is written to the Windows registry.  I have a situation where I am trying to access a virtual desktop and would like it to start talking automatically.  I’m told that they do not want anything being written to the registry, because that is how malware can be spread.  Now before everyone goes crazy over that statement, I can understand that they don’t want programs writing things to the registry arbitrarily.  Their correct in wanting to protect their platform.  No one has said that JAWS is Malware.  The admins are simply trying to protect their platform.

I’m just wondering if this is truly what is happening when we set JAWS to start automatically.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

All I can sayu is to tell both Freedom Scientific and Microsoft, I am almost sure this was caused by a recent Office update since there was no Jaws update since this started and either Microsoft or Freedom Scientific needs to do something to correct this problem. For me at least it only happens on Windows 7 machines.
Only work-around is to turn Jaws off, type your email address or part of one and press tab once or twice, then turn Jaws back on.

An Outlook repair has been suggested, but I have not tried that yet.

If anyone else has experienced this problem and has a fix, please let us know.

I highly doubt that has anything to do with an Outlook repair, it’s probably just another Office update where Microsoft decided to break things. I would call Microsoft Accessibility and show them, I am planning to do just that once I get to work today. Hello, everyone.

This morning, I just discovered a major problem with Outlook 2016 when originating an e-mail.

When I start a new e-mail with control N, I can no longer type a contact address into the “to” field.  When I do this, I get kicked out of my new e-mail, and get placed back into my inbox.

Interestingly, I can go to my contacts list, and copy and paste the e-mail address into the to field with no problem.  I can also reply to e-mails with no problem.

Once again, the issue occurs when originating an e-mail and trying to access someone in my contacts list.

I am using Jaws 18, Outlook 2016 with Office 365, and Windows 7 here.

Has anyone recently experienced this issue, and if so, have you found a fix?

I am eligible to upgrade to Jaws 2018, and will do so when I get the chance.

However, in the meantime, I’d like to be able to quickly originate e-mails in the usual way if at all possible.

Yes, only happens with Braille input. I need to find out if it still
happens with Jaws 2018. Thank you for the clarification.

No, Randy. I am using my pc with a keyboard. Sorry, I did not interpret
the fact that you are using braille.

When I type budget in grade 1 Braille or with a regular key board
attached, there is no problem. I am using the latest version of Jaws
18 on my ElBraille and when I have grade 2 Braille on for input dg
still is pronounced degrees.

I have not tried Braille input with Jaws 2018 on my desk top computer,
and I am not upgrading to Jaws 2018 on my ElBraille until I know it
won't cause other issues.

Hi Randy,

I just wanted to report to you that my Jaws 18 reads budget correctly.
I am using it now, while typing this message. There may be some
dictionary entry on your system that is causing this or, maybe the
change took place in the 2018 upgrade. I have not yet installed my copy.

I purchased an ElBraille 14 about three months ago to use in place of
my Hims Braille Sense 32 cell notetaker.

First, my understanding was that you might be able to use the
ElBraille in place of a main computer has proven to be wrong. The
ElBraille has a tablet processor, which is not as fast and responsive
as my three year old desk top computer. It is similar in speed to my
Asus tablet I purchased around three years ago. Although, I do not
use the Asus tablet enough to have a good comparison, and my
ElBraille
14 may be faster, it is not as fast and responsive as my desk top
computer.
I do not use OpenBook or OCR on the Elbraile. I believe you will
need Jaws 18. You will want to buy a USB hub to give you more than
one USB port, and I also bought an HDMI adapter with a regular
monitor port for my wife to be able to give me some feedback.

Running a computer just using the Focus 14 key board has been a
learning curve. I did cheat for a while and connected a regular key
board.
The Braille translation table in Jaws does have a problem, it
recognizes dg as the degrees symbol in words. For example, budget is
pronounced bu-degrees-et. I am not sure if Jaws 2018 has an updated
translation that has corrected this. This is a Braille translation
problem, not an ElBraille problem. Also, I have not heard yet if I
can update my ElBraille to run Jaws 2018, which I am running on the
rest
of my computers.
There are times that I wish it was a little snappier running Outlook,
Word, and Excel, but it isn't too bad. I had been using the ElNotes
program to take notes, until I just decided today to use Wordpad instead.

The makers of the ElBraille like Fire Fox, and I do not use it. I
had started using Google Chrome, but there was problems typing into
edit fields with the Braille key board when using Chrome, which I am
not sure if this is an ElBraille problem or Jaws, but I suspect it is
a Jaws problem. VFO recommended I use Internet Explorer and Ron
Miller help me get Internet Explorer to be my default browser.

Keep in mind that this is not a VFO product, and VFO did not have a
dedicated support person for the ElBraille when I last called tech
support.
Ron Miller from VFO did take the time to talk with me when I was
having some initial challenges with ElBraille. I have found it
easier and quicker to send questions direct to the Elita Group who
made the ElBraille, and they do respond fairly quickly.

I hope this helps, and let me know if you have any further questions.
I still believe the best notetaker in the future will be a full
featured windows computer or tablet, which is why I am willing to go
through the challenge of using the ElBraille.

Re: Question about starting JAWS automatically

Soronel Haetir

My experience has been that jaws doesn't work well using auto-start in
remote situations (whether connecting to a local VM or an actual
remote desktop), but I also haven't poked at it enough to try and
figure out why. If I had to guess I would think it's because jaws is
trying to start before the communication channel is ready but I do not
know that for a fact. If I start jaws manually it works fine.

Subject: Question about starting JAWS automatically

Hi all! I have a quick question regarding what happens when you set JAWS to
start automatically. When you set this up, does that mean that a key is
written to the Windows registry. I have a situation where I am trying to
access a virtual desktop and would like it to start talking automatically.
I'm told that they do not want anything being written to the registry,
because that is how malware can be spread. Now before everyone goes crazy
over that statement, I can understand that they don't want programs writing
things to the registry arbitrarily. Their correct in wanting to protect
their platform. No one has said that JAWS is Malware. The admins are
simply trying to protect their platform.
I'm just wondering if this is truly what is happening when we set JAWS to
start automatically. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hello everyone,

Is there a way to make Jaws speak the indent of current line? It's
very important in some languages, like Python to keep all the lines
indented correctly.

One way I was told is to change scheme by pressing Insert+Alt+s and
then select one of the indent schemes. But this doesn't work for me,
nothing happens when I select indent scheme. I tried it in Visual
Studio and notepad. I'm using Jaws 18 and the latest Windows 10. Is
there any additional configuration needed to make indent scheme
working?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Outlook 2016 with Jaws 18 and sending a message

All I can sayu is to tell both Freedom Scientific and Microsoft, I am almost sure this was caused by a recent Office update since there was no Jaws update since this started and either Microsoft or Freedom Scientific needs to do something to correct this problem. For me at least it only happens on Windows 7 machines.
Only work-around is to turn Jaws off, type your email address or part of one and press tab once or twice, then turn Jaws back on.

Yes, I have experienced this problem with Outlook crashing when trying to enter a contact address into the "to field". In fact, I have posted a quiry about this on this list.

The problem just started occurring within the past few days.

An Outlook repair has been suggested, but I have not tried that yet.

Also, am going to see if the problem occurs with NVDA.

If anyone else has experienced this problem and has a fix, please let us know.

I'm not sure if it's a Jaws or a Microsoft problem.

Re: Outlook 2016 Address Field Issue

Hi Tom,

I highly doubt that has anything to do with an Outlook repair, it’s probably just another Office update where Microsoft decided to break things. I would call Microsoft Accessibility and show them, I am planning to do just that once I get to work today. It is my guess that there is no work-around other than to start an email from your Contacts. For me even pasting in a complete address will crash it.
