Silencing Jaws in a self-voicing program

Richard Turner <richardturner42@...>

Since I am new to Jaws and I can’t find this in the Jaws help, could someone tell me how to set jaws to be silent while running a self-voicing program, then revert back to its normal verbose self when I leave that program?

Thanks,

Richard

It's a firefox add on that gives you control what scripts run on a web page. Goodle no Scripts and you can decide
if you need it or not.

Re: MS Office certification with JAWS?

Richard Turner <richardturner42@...>

You might start with Microsoft's page on certification:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/learning/default.aspx

I would be very careful about third party groups that offer Microsoft certification.
Our office signed about 10 of us up for one about 10 years ago and it turned out to be a scam. They were not certified by Microsoft even though they claimed to be. And hadvery formal appearing documentation.
That was through Rigel Technology (not totally sure on the spelling as I've tried to block it out of my mind.)

Good luck,
Richard

Hi.

Okay here are the steps to do this.

Assuming you have windows 10, but this will work for windows 8.1 and windows 7.

For windows 10,

1. Press the windows and I key which will get you to the settings app.

2. Press the end key on your keyboard, and this will take you to update and security.

3. If you are using jaws 2018, you can use the shift insert ; to turn on touch cursur if needed.

4. Then tab to the check for updates or if it says the list of the update.

5. Tab to the button says download.

6. Use the jaws touch and then see what progress downloading. It will then give you speech for jaws, until it reboots.

7. Use windows control enter to turn on windows narrator when you hear your hard disk spin up and then it will reboot several times. This took me about 5 hours and was able to turn on the scan option in narrator, for the fall update, and use the caps lock left and right arrow keys.

8. To turn on scan mode, use the caps lock and space and will say scan mode on. Then it will say percentage and updating.

9. Then the final reboot, will say that it is updating 100 %, then will reboot, and then go to the windows login screen.

10. Enter your password or pin to login.

11. Then you will hear jaws come up and the desktop.

Hope that helps. Did that on Tuesday, and about 5 pm, started at about 12:30 pm, and it fixed my windows corrupted updates issue. And then was able to get other updates like the updates.

Hope that helps.

Hi, only have to use ocr with jaws then the web page comes up, but might abnd had to totally uinstall using a new removal tool. Got stubborn, so will go and download the ed sharp, for my course, and then see if windows defender has a fit with it will scan, then use http://www.ninite.com.which is a exe file and can select and install multiple files in silent mode. You run it and then show you in a list. So might try that, just uinstalled Avast and the files remaining will be gone next reboot.

Thanks.

Ps: but I want a third party tool. How well does windows defender catching malware, viruses, etc. just prefer a third party anti virus and a third party anti malware and have super anti spyware free.

Just my own personal preference and do have a windows firewall and one on our router.

Google Chrome reader mode

Cristóbal

Hello list

So for the longest, I’ve been a Firefox user and have started to play around with Chrome.

IN Firefox, there is a reader mode (alt+control_R) that you could activate to get rid of a lot of clutter on websites that support it. This is almost nearly universal, but for a few sites. CNN comes to mind.

IN any event, I was wondering if Chrome had an equivalent for this feature/keyboard command? Poking around in the settings, didn’t really come across anything. Nor did I find a keyboard command listed when doing a general Google search for Chrome keyboard commands. I did find an extension called read mode, but in its brief description didn’t mention a command. Just some icon to click to enable and disable this layout.

I do use and like the Jaws flexible web feature, but the alt+control+r command is probably my most used command in Firefox. Sometimes, you just want in and out on a site without having to configure beyond that one time you’re going to click through to read X, Y or Z.

I recall way back when, there was a programmer who put out some scripts for Firefox and IE called IEMax and FireFoxMax or something. One of the nifty keyboard commands in those scripts was a control+m for a pagination/reader mode. It was incredibly useful. This was way back with Firefox 4 or 5.

Anyway, any help for a Chrome newbie on this particular command would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cristobal

Just to clarify, when Microsoft Accessibility connects to your computer it has nothing whatsoever to do with Jaws Tandem. They use their own remote support utility that is built into Windows.

It probably is a matter of choice. I prefer to have the tandem option in case I need assistance from VFO on something and they ask to do that. Also, if Microsoft Disability helps, they always tandem, easier for them than to try to tell me, as much as I try to find out how or what they do when they do it.
