Re: throwing away jaws disks?

Why is a downloaded copy of Jaws not a full copy? It has been ever since I have been using them and if I have to reinstall a computer from scratch I usually make sure I have the latest version downloaded either on a computer on the network where I can grab it or on a USB stick. I guess if you are worried you don't have internet access when you install you also should download the OCR component as that is downloaded during the install, but by the time I am ready to install Jaws I do have internet access.
For one thing, I only have one old desktop left which even has a disk drive and while I am aware that you can buy external drives which plug into a USB port, I don't want to bother. Anyhow, I'm not saying everybody has to throw away the disks, I'm just saying FS could save themselves some money by asking their customers if they want a disk or not, it should be easy enough nowadays to have this information associated with your profile/serial number.

the disks are another form of backup.
what do you do if your computer crashes and windows has to be reinstalled?
even if you have the downloaded jaws files they may not be a full copy of jaws.
at least with the disks you know they are a full copy.
i don't know if you can copy the jaws disks. but i was able to copy all the window eyes files to flash drives. i just had to manually fine the setup.exe file to do a installation to a new drive. etc.

The CD version is always an older version of what is out there on the net. I will download the latest copy to a flash drive if I need it on some kind of media.
The fact that neither of us have had this happen in over 10yrs. and I have installed and reinstalled windows more times than i can remember should answer your question.:)

Hi Van,

Thanks. This is what I needed. I also have word 2010, but my client has word 2016. I hope this works for her.

BTW, you can check by pressing Insert plus F to find out things such as Font Double spacing and so on. It will also tell you if things are centered Left or right justified.

Thanks again.

I’m using Word 2010.  You can do as you have asked.  Start on the first page of your document and go to the Insert Ribbon. Tab over till you hit the Page numbers button, which has a menu. With options as to where to place the page number, top of page, bottom of page, etc.  For me, the second option down is to put the page number at the bottom of the page in the footer and it has a submenu allowing you to pick the style.   For my test, I selected the third or fourth one down that said something like ‘pg. 1”.  Hit enter on the choice you want.  When you hit enter, your cursor will be placed in the documents footer at the beginning of the line.  By default, the page number for this choice was at the left edge.  I supposed part of what you are choosing on the submenu is where you want the page number to be located, e.g., left, right, center, etc.  If you arrow beyond the page number, you can add a comma or hyphen and your name.  Hit Escape to exit out of the footer.  You can also use the standard Word shortcuts of Control L to left justify, Control  E to center and Control R to right justify.  Now, each time you add pages, the footer will automatically add the page number with your name.

I admit that I am using my bit of vision to confirm that the page numbers are as I have told you and  I don’t know the best way for you to validate your work.  Maybe using the JAWS  cursor to read the page.

found the bottom of file settings in keyboard manager.

netbat66

i don't know but i have never made any changes to the keyboard managers.
it appears it is makeing these changes all by themselves.
for me i found the settings.
be sure to make a copy of the original file just in case it gets messed up.
then you can delete the original jkm files and rename the copies back.
open the keyboard manager with jaws key 8.
then make sure you are on the default settings.
in the default.jkm
check for bottom of file. if it says bottom of file down arrow delete it.
then look for say next line. with me it was not defined.
also when i tried to change key stroke from the pull down menu it said it was
not available.
but i was able to use new keystroke on it and was able to change it this way to
say next line and set it to the down arrow. then unchecked desktop only.

Subject: Problem trying to repair Jaws 18 before upgrading to V 2018

Hello list,

So, I’ve been dealing with this issue since Jaws 18 was put out on 9/26/17.
Along with the Outlook address thing that later got fixed, I was having trouble
when replying or forwarding message in Outlook. Arrowing down was not possible.
Jaws would behave as though I was at the bottom of the screen. Even if I
arrowed up once and then tried going back down to the line I was previously at,
I’d encounter that same barrier. Navigating the message body of text with the
read by paragraph or sentence commands, Jaws worked as always. It was just the
read/navigate by line that was giving me problems.

VFO tech support emailed me instructing that I should try doing a Jaws repair.
Do the copy path from my JFW .exe file and add the / type repair at the end in
the run dialog box.

As I saw that Jaws 2018 came out today, I figured I’d try to get this resolved.
I for one reason or another hadn’t had the chance to go through with the
repair, but figured I should try addressing it before upgrading to JFW 2018.

In any event, I went through the repair process earlier today and along with
all the other typical Jaws chatter when doing an installation (I was using a
JFW.exe file from October that addressed the Outlook issue), I heard Jaws say
something about a sentinel system driver not being copied. By the end of the
process I then got the following error message:

The JAWS setup package could not install the required component

JAWSRepair. The process will now exit.

OK

I already wrote VFO back about this, but as it’s Jaws 2018 release day, I don’t
expect a follow up any time soon as I’m sure they’ll be dealing with all sorts
of stuff related to that.

Anyone have an idea on what this is or how to fix it?

Thanks,

Cristobal

These instructions have worked for me in Firefox. Hopefully they will work the same in Chrome.

Open a window in Chrome.
Open the JAWS "Settings Center" by doing insert key plus 6.
under the"Web / HTML / PDFs"category, there is a subcategory labeled
"Miscellaneous"
Under"Miscellaneous"there is a setting labeled
"Indicate Element Attribute"
Unchecking this setting will stop Jaws from saying clickable.

Pretty interesting. Also pretty expensive, I think around $250. And then there is the bit about letting someone unlock my door to drop off a package. I won’t be able to see the camera videos, I personally would not like that. But interesting, nonetheless.. How about when they deliver using a drone? Would it fly into my home and drop the package?

Re: inserting page numbers within word

Kevin Hourigan <kevinthourigan@...>

Below are notes from a FS webinar.

1. Press ALT+N to move to the Insert tab of the ribbon.

2. Next, press H for Header, and press DOWN ARROW to select Blank 3 Columns. Focus moves back to the header edit area at the top of the page. This time,

three different fields for text are inserted with the words [Type text] at the left justified, center, and right justified parts of the header edit area.

The cursor is just to the left of the first field.

3. Press RIGHT ARROW. The first field is now selected. You can verify this by pressing the read current control keystroke, INSERT+TAB.

4. Press RIGHT ARROW to move focus out of the field to the space after it. JAWS says, "out of form field."

5. Next, press RIGHT ARROW to move to the beginning of the second [Type text] field, and then select it by pressing RIGHT ARROW again.

6. Press the DEL key to delete this middle text field. The cursor remains in the center of the header, but the field is now gone. JAWS reports, "out of

form field" again.

7. Press RIGHT ARROW twice more to move to and then select the third [Type text] field.

8. Next, press ALT+JH to move to the Header & Footer Tools Design tab of the ribbon, followed by N U to activate the Page Number button in the Header &

Footer group of the lower ribbon. A submenu opens.

9. Press C to choose Current Position, and another submenu opens with focus on the first item, Plain Number 1.

10. Press ENTER to select Plain Number 1. The menus close, and the [Type text] field is now replaced with the number one.

                11. Press HOME to move to the beginning of the header area. This also selects the left aligned [Type text] field.

12. Type in your name or whatever .

13. Press escape to return to the main document.

He could then use the WE mouse keys and navigate up a certain number of pixels and then move slightly to the right, where he could then click on an upload button that was not seen by Window-Eyes. Here is an example:

The letter "a" in the word "name" is at position 200:200.
The button to upload is at position 205:185.
There is no text or graphic that is available to click on. To click
the button, he finds the a in name and then moves his mouse pointer
up from
200 to 185 by pressing the move up command three times and then moves to the right by pressing the move right command one time. He is then on the upload button and can use his mouse click key to press the button.

He never got to a place in Window-Eyes where he could set up a
placemarker, and he is only just getting started with Jaws. His PC
is a
Win10 desktop. How can one move by pixels in Jaws? Thank you.

Hi,

Place markers only work on the web, don't they?

The Snowman's Hotspot Clicker script would be better for this.

All the best

I come late to this discussion but...
When your Brother finally gets this particular area found with the mouse can he then use the place marker functions of JAWS to get there all the time?
If I understood the functions of this ability it can be website specific and he can just use the placemarker list to go directly to that point.
I just thought it was worth a suggestion.
Anyone with more experience with the placemarkers should absolutely jump in here and correct my understanding.

Re: can't up date jaws until I solve navigational issue

No issues here, you might want to completely uninstall Jaws and reinstall it. This is certainly not an issue which came up in private beta testing so probably something unique that went wrong on your system.

I haven't Ben able to use any navigational keys in Jaws since I upgraded to windows 10 fall edition. Has anyone experienced this issue?
Been using NVDA in the meantime. Thanks

Re: Chrome Question

Gene,

These instructions have worked for me in Firefox. Hopefully they will work the same in Chrome.

Open a window in Chrome.
Open the JAWS "Settings Center" by doing insert key plus 6.
under the"Web / HTML / PDFs"category, there is a subcategory labeled
"Miscellaneous"
Under"Miscellaneous"there is a setting labeled
"Indicate Element Attribute"
Unchecking this setting will stop Jaws from saying clickable.

Pam

I know this has been answered before but I don't have the time to search for it right now.

How do I stop Chrome from saying "clickable" at the end of every line?
