Re: Can JAWS and Window Eyes co-exists on my computers?

Scott Wheat

Robin,

Jaws and WindowEyes will coexist on the same computer just fine. I have both installed on several.

Obviously, you only want 1 of them to start on computer startup and you only want one to be running at any given time.

If you think you will switch between them, make sure that a shortcut key (such as CTRL-ALT-J) gets set up for Jaws as this does not happen by default as it did with WindowEyes.

You do this in the properties for the jaws icon that will get put on the desktop.

Your IT person should know how to do this, but if not let me know and I can give you instructions.

Have a nice day!

Scott

I’m about to install JAWS 18 on my home computer, then will have my tech guys at work install it on my computer there.  Is there anything I need to be aware of to have JAWS and Window Eyes co-exist on my computers at the same time?  I already have NVDA installed as a backup and that does not seem to cause issues, but, since I do not have admin rights to my work laptop, I want to anticipate anything I should ask the tech guy for help with as I start the switch over process. To JAWS.

outlook autocomplete

david

Good afternoon all;

Well, I just updated my windows 10 machine to the latest windows build,

Also there was another office 2016, after installing both, and doing a restart, I have discovered that the autocomplete in outlook is broken again.

There was a update for this issue just last week.

Windows 10, changing desktop to list view

Bill White <billwhite92701@...>

Some time ago, a keystroke was given to change the desktop view to one single column. This keystroke was CONTROL plus SHIFT plus 6 on the numbers row.

Some have said they get results with this command. Others have said this key combination does nothing, but that ALT plus CONTROL plus 6 accomplishes this task. Others say that neither key combination works for them. I am one of these latter group. Does anyone know of a consistent way for making the desktop one long list of icons instead of having to arrow to right and left to see another group of icons?

Thank you.

Re: downloading updates

David Moore

Hi all!

It took about an hour to install after I restarted the computer as well.

Wow, I kept turning on Narrator as well, and JAWS finally came on over an hour later.

I love this version.

NVDA is so fast in Edge and file explorer. Narrator is much snappier with Microsoft Mark, and works much better in Edge and Chrome. NVDA works really well, now, in the mail app.

Wow, NVDA can keep up with my typing.

It seems like many more of us are getting the 1709 much faster than we did with the 1703 version. It took months to get that one.

Re: Ripping a CD

Randy Barnett <randy@...>

Hi, The smaller the file the lower the sound quality. But Honestly I cant tell the difference after 192kbs. 0% is 128kbs and takes the least amount of disk space but a lot of people can hear the decrease in quality. 192kbs is still small but yeailds good sound. If your 17 years old you may hear a difference in quality between 192 and 256 or even 320kbs. But after 25 the ability to hear the minute details goes down especially if you are exposed to loud noise often i.e. concerts loud music in a car or noisy work environment.

If you switch to the jaws cursor when on the quality setting it will tell you how much disk space that setting will use on average.

Now....please explain audio quality. You said "33% is 192kbs. 66% is 256Kbs. and 100% is 320kbs."  Is the average quality 50%?  Does the different levels use more space or memory or whatever you call it.  :(

I noticed my default was at 0%. That seemed odd to me but what do I know?!

I am a real novice here.

tab until you get to audio quality. This is a slider that justs gives percentage. 33% is 192kbs. 66% is 256Kbs. and 100% is 320kbs.
select one.
Now tab to OK and press enter.
You might want to convert the old .wma files as they are not very well supported.
This is done with a different program. It may be easier to just re-rip them after you change to mp3.

Hi,

Well, Randy, I kind of have it figured out. I get glimpses of light, then get lost in the fog.

The first CD I ripped was a non-commercial one which is why it came up as unknown artist. Then I tried a second one and that one did exactly as you all said- listed the title, artist and minutes.  But..... I was unable to copy and paste it to a thumb drive.

Also I have to work a bit to understand what format it is- I am guessing it is not MP3. Thus I have to find my way to how to change that.....

Brian: Yeah, like you said though it automaticly pops up with the artist info so I think even a beginner would just press next to accept the first option.
the WMP part of my instructions was for the mp3 tags so media players would have the correct artist and song info. Just changing the file names wont do this. but it has been so long since I messed with a actual CD things may have changed.
God! I remember when I first put over 200 CD's on my PC When I figured out I could do that. Back then artists didnt always come up correctly. Sometimes it would have 3 different artists for a CD and I would have to find one of the kids to tell me witch one it was! LOL

Well, I presumed complete beginner.   If the situation you describe is the case then my approach is always just to rip it first then do the cleanup on the files ripped afterward.   It's been a very long time since I last had to do this, but if memory serves, audio CDs that WMP cannot find media information for will end up under the "Various Artists" folder and get some sort of generic title like "Album 1".  I find it a grand PITA to try to do the track name creation in WMP so after I get to the folder for Various Artists I just rename the folder for the album I just ripped to something that makes sense to me, then I open that folder and go track by track and rename the individual files.  I find file explorer much easier to use for that task.

Others will, however, prefer to do it in WMP.   It's been so long since I've done that for any reason I can't even begin to describe the process.  I'd have to get a mix CD that someone made for me and try it again.

It's there, use the tab key and you land on a list view, arrow down to advanced, once on the advance tab, tab once and I believe you'll arrow down till you hear update tab. Checking never update don't work, at least it didn't in my case. It updated anyhow. Good Luck.

It’s been a few years since I used Office 2013, but I don’t recall it as being that different.

you can also press Shift+Tab, just make sure you are at the very beginning of the message and sometimes I do have to press it a couple of times to get to the list of attachments. Once you are there when it reads the first one and if you let it finish Jaws should say “1 of 1” or “1 of 3” or whatever the case may be and you can use left and right arrows to go from one attachment to the next if there is more than one.

Below is the text from speech history for an email I received which has one attachment, I first do a say line on that email in the Inbox, then open the email, let Jaws read the first few lines, then I press Jaws key+A. I indicate in quotation marks what I am pressing just before the text and I left in the vertical tabs which indicate the various bits of information::

Subject: Opening Attachments in Outlook 13

Happy Tuesday, Using JAWS 18, Windows 7.  After opening a message, I shift tab to attachments and was thinking JAWS would tell me how many attachments I have, but it doesn’t.  Is this  controlled by a verbosity setting?  Also, thought JAWS key and letter A would tell me about  attachments, but it doesn’t, just tells me about links in the email.

Can you all tell me best way to manage attachments, i.e. opening and determining how many there are?

Thanks
