Thanks for all the feedback so far. I am already using headphones. What has been suggested to me is to try an external USB sound card. There are other JAWS performance issues such as strange lags, pops, clicks, and generally not fun. Not terrible, but with all the time I spend on the computer, it is worth it to me to invest even more money, such as to buy the sound card.

On-board audio is very often of low quality even on otherwise good systems. I would suggest you find a pair of headphones (either USB or 3.5mm audio jack, doesn't matter for this test) and check whether the problem remains when using a different output. It may simply be that the built-in speakers will not give good enough results to use at the speed you would like.

walk them through getting one of the sound cards speaking!

FS tech support then remoted in to my machine, and ran what they
described as an especially thorough and deep version of the JAWS repair feature.
Problem still there; I cannot run JAWS at my usual speed, I have to
slow it down, and the problem disappears. Ironically, it acts as if I
had a really old and slow computer, where the opposite is the case.

FS support then suggested trying other JAWS voices, while
acknowledging that Eloquence was normally what folks found to be the
most responsive and clear when run at my speed, which is around 50.

With the above in mind, what available JAWS voices, if any, would
have the best chance of working for my purposes?

FS support, as usual, suggested I try version 18. At least this time
they first checked and noted I did not have JAWS rights past version
17, and did not push me to try JAWS 18 or 2018. I would, for cost
reasons, prefer to get JAWS 17 working the way it did on all my
previous computers! If trying other voices does not work, then I will
try 18 and 201, in demo mode.

So, any voice recommendations are greatly appreciated. If you think I
should instead buy and try a USB sound card, do you have a
recommendation on a good USB sound card that does not cost a fortune?

i have always had great success using shelly. i put the pitch at 70 and my speed is 35. she works great.

Hi again, Gery. I should have also included that the Vertual Ribbons option is in Settings Center. Use either JAWS key plus F2, or use JAWS key plus the number six under the function keys. Then navigate to Miscellaneous and find Vertual Ribbons, or use the Search Box and type in Vertual Ribbon. Then load Default Configuration with CONTROL SHIFT plus D.

Make sure that Vertual Ribbon is not checked on your home computer. This is in JAWS Options, under Miscellaneous. The default configuration must be loaded before this can be changed.

If you press Jaws Key and 1, it gives functions of JAWS hot keys, and if you press the key twice, more information.

you can set jaws to the u s b device . then only the recording will be recorded and jaws will stay on the u s b headphones.

What are the benefits of using a Dec-TALK Express over the modern options?
I have one sitting in a drawer, needing a repair to its power cord socket,
so if there is a good reason, I would get that fixed!

I go back to the 1980s, and my share of synthetic speech boards or
stand-alone devices, all of which were really bad by today's standards. I
thought I had the perfect device when I got a Dectalk. I then got the
then-new Audapter, created by Noel Runyun, and it was truly wonderful, fast,
responsive, stable.

Fast forward to when JAWS for Windows came out with that excellent built-in
Eloquence voice. For a while, the limited processing power and speed of
those earlier computers caused me to continue use of the Audapter; it is a
stand-alone device like the Dec-Talk, so it helped a lot to take the load
off the computer. But at some point, computers and Eloquence became, in my
humble opinion, much better than the Dec-Talk or the Audapter. After using
just Eloquence with JAWS for several years, I dug out the Audapter, and was
shocked by how it was surpassed by the modern technology.

So again, what is the advantage today in using the Dec-Talk?

port, which was com1, and accepted the default settings: 9600, n, 8, 1. I
restarted JAWS 14. I looked in the list of synthesizers and did not find it

Are you sure that you are using the correct com port for the DecTalk?
Have you attempted to restart JAWS? What occurs when you attempt to
find it in the voice adjustment dialog? I am using the latest version
of JAWS with a DecTalk Express on a Windows10 64bit. I am using it
with a serial to USB cable. I find that this set up works well, but
that once in a while on a web page JAWS will crash and I will need to

Sorry I do not have an example to test, but I think it is control shift O to list the Pictures/objects, then press enter on them to select, then delete, or press applications key to resize etc. Or possibly delete was in the context menu as well.
