I have not been one to explore games on the computer. I liked crossword puzzles before my eyesight went south.

Are there jaws compatible crossword puzzles on line? Are there some that can be obtained and solved using jaws and computer?

So I'm thinking about starting my own Google group for the blind/visually

Which would be better, Google Groups or Google Groups IO. Not sure what is

Hi Pablo,

I know you were trying to get tech support from Freedom Scientific on Friday and they were closed due to the hurricane. I was just curious what is going on today so I called the toll free number. It did say that due to the hurricane they are working with reduced staff, but when I chose tech support for Jaws I was put on hold and shortly after was told by the phone system that I was caller number 1 in the queue. I didn’t have any urgent questions so I hung up in order to give others the chance to reach somebody, but it would appear that FS is open for business at least to some degree. I can also say to those who commented they should let people telecommute that I am pretty sure at least some of their tech support people do work from their homes if not all. I once or twice asked a tech support agent and they told me they were working from at home.

Best regards,

Sieghard

The majority of support works from home. I’ve spoken to the support team all the way from Kentucky to Alabama, Ohio, and Massachusetts.  If the servers are down because of Irma that may explain the reason for the difficulty in getting through.

Re: Jaws saying punctuation that is not on screen

Mario

I suspect that the updated program that is used to create the PDF
reports is inserting or creating extraneous characters that are strange
because if you place the PC cursor on the invisible question symbol and
press numpad 5 three times quickly, you hear "character 55358". the
normal question mark is 63. and I'd also think the other characters you
mentioned would have strange character values as well. I would suggest
to either make a dictionary entry to filter out the pronunciation of
these extra ordinary symbols or bring this issue to the attention of the
manufacturer's of the program used to create the PDF reports and explain
the issue and impact it has on your work. or do both.

in the meantime, to add a dictionary entry, you can either:

1. move the PC cursor to the mysterious character, press shift+right
arrow to select, press control+c to copy it to the clipboard.
now press insert+d to open the dictionary manager, and add an entry,
pressing control+v for the actual word and pressing the spacebar for
it's replacement. just try it with one symbol to see if it works. if not:

2. you'll have to try using the character value for the actual word. I
am not sure on doing this because I don't know if the value needs to be
preceded by a slash or some other character like perhaps a caret.

the other suggestion leads to ask a question? do you know what the
setting for graphics is set to? this maybe a simpler suggestion before
trying the others mentioned. if you don't know:

when the report is open in Reader DC, press insert+v, type graphics,
down arrow once, and listen to what the level is set to. if it does not
say labeled, press the spacebar until it does and press enter to save
the change. now see if the mysterious symbols are still spoken or gone.

Hi all,

I know a little of what my problem is but… I don’t know how to work
around it.

We have a program that generates reports into a PDF format. This program
has been updated in the last week or so. I didn’t notice this last week
but I am noticing it now.

When I run one of these reports Jaws is reporting a Question Mark after
many of the words that are presented in a line populated by a criteria
in put or a data field.

I have used WE on these same resulting pdfs and I am not hearing the
Question marks read back.

I opened older reports generated by the older system and there jaws is
not saying the question marks as it is in todays reports.

I had visual verification that there are no marks on the screen to see
in either the older reports or the new reports.

And, yes I have unloaded and reloaded jaws no change. And, yes I have
restarted the computer. This is Jaws 18, Windows 10 1703, and Adobi
reader DC.

First question What is jaws reading? Why is it now saying these things?

I think they must be some sort of place holder generated but why now is
Jaws reading them?

The report “looks” exactly as it did before.

If I can’t figure out how to make the report not use this how do I keep
jaws from saying the invisible punctuation marks?

Like I said this just happened today. Did something happen to an update
someware else like Adobi Reader or Windows itself that would have caused
this change?

I doubt it due to the older reports reading correctly but.

How can I stop jaws from reading these invisible marks?

I’ll use the speech history to show you all what it is that I am hearing
and paste it below.

NOTE the vertical tab and bullet that is being spoken in the history is
only in the history. It is not happening during the reading of the PDF.

Here is an example of to days report.

Instapaper versus Pocket and accessibility

Cristóbal

Hello list,

So for the longest, I’ve been using Instapaper to save various articles to read later. I mainly do so via the iOS app on my iPhone. This arrangement has served me well.

Nevertheless, the actual website has been and continues to present some accessibility issues. I’ve written the Instapaper folks about this as well as VFO. VFO took a look at the site and pointed out some areas where accessibility is lacking. I provided this info to Instapaper as well. The site still has the same issues. The Instapaper folks gave lip service on how they take accessibility seriously and would look into it, but nothing’s changed.

IN any event, I’ve found myself needing to check out my article database more and more on my PC. TO this, does anyone know if Pocket has any better accessibility on the computer in conjunction with Jaws? I’m on V 18 with Firefox as my main browser.

I guess I’m also interested in how accessible the iOS app is, but for now, more so the actual website on the PC. It would be a hassle to have to transfer everything I’ve saved over the years just to find out that Pocket may have accessibility problems of its own.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Cristobal

My employer requires everyone to use Outlook on the Web. I don't
remember the setting either but it is an alternative to the default
view. After I selected it a few years ago, I never needed to
configure Outlook 365 again. It is highly accessible and preferable
in a big organization. the address book is also on the Web and

I originally found OWA very easy to use, but then at one point it looked
totally different and was a real pain and very inaccessible. I then saw a
post where somebody described where to find this setting which switched it
back to the old style which is super accessible.
It's a very clean interface where messages are displayed in a table which
for me says it has 8 columns and 22 rows, at the bottom I can click on other
pages to display more messages and you can use just the arrows if you have
table navigation turned on to go left and right and up and down and read
fields like From, Date, Subject etc. Each message has a checkbox in front of
it so you could, for example select multiple messages for deletion and so
on. If you have thi slayout you should have no problems, if not hopefully
somebody who knows how to set this up correctly can provide the steps.
I should say that I also use Outlook 2016 because I also have my personal
Outlook.com accounts set up and find it easier to use, but for my business
account I could easily get used to using OWA.

Serotek is actually headquartered in Minneapolis, although its former CEO, Mike Calvo spent most of his time in Florida.  Maybe that’s why they are a dying company that is barely surviving, particularly since its chief programmer, Matt Campbell, has left.  Because Irma now appears to be taking dead aim at the Tampa-St. Pete area, don’t expect VFO to reopen for a few days.  If storm damage is really devastating, they may not be able to reopen anytime soon especially if power is out and roads are impassable.  They chose a bad time to release JAWS 2018 beta because they may be receiving loads of bug reports from beta testers that they may not be able to respond to until things are back to normal. So don’t be surprised if the release of JAWS 2018 final version is delayed.

Good evening everyone,

It's the Florida Governor's orders. He's telling everyone in that area to get out so what do you expect! Naturally Freedom Scientific will be closed. They don't want their employees in harm's way and I don't blame them! This is one reason why companies like FS should remote more of their workforce. If problems with weather or some other disaster occurs in Florida their employees in California or Texas for example can take over. Bring on telecommuting!

Hi Marsha,

I recently used Jaws 16 again for a bit when Jaws 18 had issues with Excel and I noticed that Chrome crashed with Jaws 16.

However, with Jaws 18 Chrome works perfectly well, I have it set as my default browser and certainly don’t have to first open Chrome before I open Jaws. I also know for a fact that Jonathan Mosen uses Chrome as his default web browser as he often demonstrates something during his FS Casts where he clearly states he uses Chrome. I don’t know what Jaws version you use, but certainly in Jaws 18 an the 2018 Beta Chrome works just fine and I rarely go back to IE any more.

Thank you, David. I wouldn't think something like this would be a joking matter. My husband and I pray for all those in harm's way.

Wow, Guys!

Hurricane Irma is the worst hurricane in the atlantic. I can’t believe you are so uncaring. Your JAWS problems, and mine, will always be there! How would you feel if they died or the place was blown to the ground. Please have some compassion!

People are being ordered to evacuate from areas closed to where Freedom Scientific is located. Is there any heart left in this society?

I got family there. The hurican decrease power, and shows that is coming to a lower level as soon get to florida. So there is not concerns. Look Cuba, they received Irma when it was category 5, and how many people died?

These guys should be working.

Hi guys,

I am calling FS, and looks like they closed early today. Irma is not there yet, so what is going on here?

Yesterday they had problems with the server, and tech support didn’t help me because of that. Now they are closing early?

Kind of funny you say this. Serotek does the same thing. They don’t have a location, but yet they’re everywhere.

Hi, there probably close because they're telling people to evacuate those areas as of now. They all want to get out before Sunday as that storm is on its way here. If it is not nothing to play with.

I hope all VFO employees affected by the hurricane are well prepared and remain safe – and likewise to those on this list who are in its path.

A useful Web site (accessible with JAWS and via mobile apps) from which to listen to news-related radio stations is https://www.tunein.com/

(It provides access to thousands of radio stations from around the world.)

The FS building in Saint Petersburg is in Zone B. Zone B is under mandatory evacuation as of early this morning. Many of their employees were in zone A which were under evacuation yesterday.

I live in Zone c which so far is not under evacuation but with over thirty thousand people in Florida already without electricity, and many schools already closed through Tuesday, I’m hoping I won’t have to go to a shelter before it is over. I do not work for VFO. But don’t live all that far away from there.

Hi Pablo,

You seriously complain that FS is closed with Erma less than 24 hours away? Have you followed the news? There are 5+ Million people who are asked to get out of many areas and this is not a situation where it’s business as usual until the storm is an hour away and then you get in your car and make a run for it. Then of course there is the fact that as far as I know all phone support people are blind or visually impaired themselves and while many may have families and friends who can help them evakuate, maybe some don’t and have to fend for themselves.

If VFO closed their doors early I applaud their decision to give their staff the ability to get ready, pack some stuff and get out of there, who knows if there will be anything to come back to. Just out of curiocity I just Googled St. Petersburg and it part of the Tampa/Clearwater/St. Petersburg metro area with a population of 2.8 Million and it is located on a peninsula between Tampa Bay and the Golf of Mexico with a connection to mainland Florida to the North. Elevation of St. Petersburg is 44 feet above sea level.

In a news article on CBC News I read this morning that Erma has shifted a bit to the west which overall is better for the Miama area on the atlantic coast, but worse for the Golf of Mexico side. In addition to 150+ miles an hour wind and a foot of rain, Erma is expected to produce a storm surge which could be anywhere from 26 to 40 feet. If the elevation of St. Petersburg is 44 feet then I assume that is an average or maybe measured at the airport and with the city being on the water there are many areas which will be at or little above sea level which means even a 20 foot storm surge would cover most houses and a 40 foot storm surge would reach the 4th floor of most apartment buildings. Let’s not worry about your Jaws problem until we know if FS still has a building next week fit to be occupied and, even if their location escapes with no or little damage, whether their employees can even get to work amidst the chaos which will surely reign in Florida for the next few weeks or even months.

Regards,

Sieghard

My employer requires everyone to use Outlook on the Web. I don't
remember the setting either but it is an alternative to the default
view. After I selected it a few years ago, I never needed to
configure Outlook 365 again. It is highly accessible and preferable
in a big organization. the address book is also on the Web and
constantly updated.

Hi all,

I have learned so much from your posts, thank you. Already I have improved
through little changes, thanks to you all.

Curious if anyone uses the Outlook 365 on the web, I can access work emails
at home but it looks very different than the Outlook 2016 I use at work.
Any tips or key commands you can share?

Thanks a bunch for sharing your experience-Diane
