Hi Carol, When trying to use -control plus 2, I notice Jaws doesn’t say anything in regards to if it’s double spaced or not. Is this normal? Best: James

Hi all! Chrome Browser works great for me. I like it much better than firefox, because you have one virticle menu to do everything. I did a tutorial on using the Chrome Browser, I will put it on the list, or email me privately. Chrome is very fast with loading pages, and it is very secure. Many of the key commands are the same as firefox. Also, if you use NVDA, I am using MS Edge with NVDA, and I am liking it better than Chrome, because it drains very little from the battery. NVDA works as well in Edge, as JAWS works in Chrome. With JAWS, Chrome is the best browser to use by far. David Moore Sent from Mail for Windows 10

Hi all When I had Windows 7 I always used Internet Explorer as my main browser, though from time to time I also used Firefox a bit.
Now with Windows 10 it feels to me like Internet Explorer isn’t quite cutting it for me anymore. It’s often slow and sluggish and it also crashes from time to time giving all sorts of errors.
I think it’s time to try something else and switch over to that as my primary browser. I haven’t tried Chrome yet, but from what I understand it’s also accessible with Jaws these days and I know Firefox is also accessible. So my question, which of the 2 do you prefer to use and why? Which do you find most accessible and easier to use?
Thanks

I use both. I also use IE, as well. When I want to save a shortcut to my desktop, I use I E. Most of the time, I use Firefox. When 10 came out, if you used Edge, it was suggested by the browser that Edge didn't support screen readers. Now, there is a push by another list to use Edge. I muse if they are getting a kickback from Microsoft under the guise of trialing, Edge. If that is the case, show me the money, honey. I don't work for free.

The podcasts I was referring to were provided to those switching from Window Eyes to JAWS. You can find them on the page below listed as a list of recordings and text scripts of the recordings. Look for the Tutorials header. I’m sure there are other sources for similar podcasts, even by searching Google or YouTube.

Hello, I need to get up the nerve to switch to JAWS from Window Eyes on my work laptop. We’re on Windows 7 and Office 2010 here at work. I listened to Raul Gallegos’ podcast on what to expect with Outlook, but it only covered mail. Can someone please give me a quick overview on what to expect for the calendar? I am so dependent on the Window Eyes Outlook Calendar that pulls my appointments into a quick summary window; I need to know how I will efficiently access my schedule while using JAWS.

I like that FireFox updates itself easily from time to time. It takes a little getting used too since it uses the term BookMarks for what IE called Favorites. But, once you get used to it, I think it is excellent and far superior to Internet Explorer on any system, but especially Windows 10. Richard

risk-taking device
Gudrun Brunot
Hi gang: Recently, I related to you a horror incident where I accepted a password-protected document as a translation assignment and ran into several issues, one being a messed-up [normal] Word template. After many trials and tribulations, I got that straightened out. The same agency just sent me an inquiry about doing a large project. These are, with the exception of system crashes and messed-up templates resulting from encryption, good jobs, nice and text-based.
My thought is to find an affordable send-and-receive device that will let me inoculate my regular desktop machine from the hassles of inadvertent changes caused by these file transfers. I did ask one of the agency directors if anybody else had had difficulty with this encryption issue, and she said, sighing, “yes.”
Advice appreciated regarding: operating system—assignments tend to be Word documents. compatibility with JAWS? Tablet, netbook, or laptop? (slimness and portability preferred). Keyboard, external or built-in? I do have a cordless Logitech Keyboard that I use on my music computer. It has a little transmitter unit that’s USB connected. Could I use that in case I need an external keyboard? Or would a Bluetooth one be better, or one that’s incorporated on the device? I’m not overly fond of the flat on-screen keyboards, typing on that is slow. Brands—Dell Inspiron, Lenovo, Acer? Software--—I have Office already installed by Dell when I bought my desktop. would I have to buy that or do some of these devices have Office installed? I realize I need to ask questions if I check devices out in a store, but if any of you have some pointers, it would help me head in the right direction.

Re: Looking for Accessible Image Manipulation Program
I also meant to say that the aspect ratio is maintained, and that's part of the reason for the rotation on portrait orientation pictures.
If you know that all the photos you're working on are the more typical landscape orientation no rotation comes into play at all, so keep that in mind. My most frequent use of this utility is downsizing photos taken at very high resolution to make them "web posting friendly," which usually means either 640x480 or 1024x768. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1703, Build 15063 (dot level on request - it changes too often to keep in signature)

Re: Looking for Accessible Image Manipulation Program
Richard,
You would need to know when you have photos in portrait if you wish to maintain that orientation afterward. Most bulk image programs, whether resizing or doing anything else, need to have a consistent "long side" and "short side" and that's generally a landscape orientation as they work through the images. Bulk Image Manager intelligently detects if it's been handed a picture in portrait orientation and rotates it to landscape before applying the resizing algorithm so that no picture content is lost (except what always gets lost from any resizing, downward, anyway). I wish it were smart enough to remember that it had done so, and apply the counterrotation to the end result, but it isn't. If you find a bulk resizer that is, please let me know. I haven't. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1703, Build 15063 (dot level on request - it changes too often to keep in signature)

Re: Disabling "copyright" symbol in Word 2016
Van Lant, Robin
Margaret, The Word 2016 instructions Steve gave below also seem relevant for Word 2010, so I would believe they are also relevant for 2013. Give the second, longer instructions below a try.
Easy way: whenever you do this and JAWS says "copyright", press Backspace once. When you press the right parenth key, Word changes what you've typed into the copyright symbol and JAWS echoes this. pressing Backspace immediately undoes the change.
More long-winded way: Press Alt, F, T to open the Options dialogue.
DownArrow to Proofing
Tab to AutoCorrect Options and press Enter to open the AutoCorrect dialogue
You should be in an edit area. Type (c), that's left parenth c right parenth
Tab to the Delete button and press it
OK out of both dialogues
You should find now typing (c) doesn't give you a copyright symbol at all.
Hope that helps,

There's two ways you can do this. First is easy but has to be done repeatedly, second is more long-winded but fixes it for good.

Hello, group. Whenever I type a document in Word 2016, and I number a line as -parentheses, the letter c, closed parentheses -, it always reads "copyright". It is a little annoying for me to keep hearing this. It does it automatically when I type in Word 2016; I am not inserting the "copyright" symbol from the list. Is there a way to stop JAWS from reading the "c" as "copyright"? Thanks. I am running Windows 8.1 with JAWS 16. Elise
