Hi Marilyn,

The key combination to toggle this on and off is control shift numrow 8.  See if invoking this keystroke helps.

The long way to do it is to go to tools, options and on the view page tab like crazy until you get to, All, & uncheck it, tab to OK, & press enter to save / close.

Take care.  Mike.  Go Dodgers!

Hello all,

Please help - I was working in my document and I'm not sure which keys I pressed, but now after each word JAWS speaks, I hear "space marker" word "space marker" word "new line" word etc

By this I mean that after each word JAWS speaks, it indicates audibly that there is a space, as well as indicating when it is gon to a new line.

I have no idea how I turned this on, and equally, no idea how to turn it off again. I am working on a document I need to finish urgently, but cannot work properly with this feature on.

Thank you in advance for any help with this - what is the feature called, and how can I turn it on and off - I realize it can be valuable, but just not now.

Shirley,

I suspect something broke in Jaws,. If you have already tried to restart your computer and it’s continuing to behave this way, you may have to repair your Jaws installation.

If you have the installer for Jaws, simply run this file, and you will be able to repair Jaws in the resulting wizard.
I hope this helps.

Mario,

I followed your steps, but all your "uncheck" items were unchecked. There was another one you did not list - object anchors - and this one was checked, so I unchecked it. This seems to have solved the problem. I am nervous about saying it is fixed, but it seems that way. If not, I'll be back to say so. Otherwise, thanks so much for your help.

Thanks to the many others who also gave solutions. I really appreciate it.

Marilyn, for Word 2010 (or you can at least get an idea where to go if you're not using 2010):

press alt, then f for the file ribbon, then t for the options dialog.
type d or arrow to select the display category and press tab until you get to the show these formatting marks on the screen section.
make sure the following are unchecked (press the spacebar to check or uncheck and continue to tab to the next setting):

Tab characters check box
Spaces check box
Paragraph marks check box
Show all formatting marks check box

the last one, the all checkbox, is important to uncheck.
keep pressing tab to and spacebar on the ok button.

now JAWS shouldn't be announcing these marks any longer.

Hi, Marilyn. If you haven't tried to correct the announcement problem yet, try the following keystroke. It's a toggle, meaning that, if you press it once, you turn the announcements off, and if pressed again, the announcements will be turned on again.

Try:

CONTROL plus SHIFT plus 8. This is not the number eight key on the num pad, but the number 8 key above the letter I.

Hi, Dani. It isn't within JAWS itself. It's in the installation program you
used to install the most recent version of JAWS. Once you click the install
program, you will need to press the "next" button a couple of times. Then
you will be presented with a few buttons such as "modify JAWS", and "Repair

Marilyn, for Word 2010 (or you can at least get an idea where to go if
you're not using 2010):

press alt, then f for the file ribbon, then t for the options dialog.
type d or arrow to select the display category and press tab until you
get to the show these formatting marks on the screen section.
make sure the following are unchecked (press the spacebar to check or
uncheck and continue to tab to the next setting):

Tab characters check box
Spaces check box
Paragraph marks check box
Show all formatting marks check box

the last one, the all checkbox, is important to uncheck.
keep pressing tab to and spacebar on the ok button.

now JAWS shouldn't be announcing these marks any longer.

Press insert-3, which tells Jaws to pass the next key through to the application.  Pressing numpad-+ after numpad or insert-3 should send the numpad-+ directly through to Google docs.  I do not have much experience working with Google docs, but I have used insert-3 many times with other applications.

You turned a setting in Word that shows graphics to represent spaces and line feeds. I believe control-* turns it on and off. It is found on the ribbon under formatting and paragraphs.

I hope that helps.

Re: Help! Is it Jaws? Or Excel? Or my computer?

Sieghard,

Sorry to hear of these issues. Almost sounds like something more with Win 7 as restore points don't work and some of the issues you mention with MS accessibility desk. As I've just installed Office 2016 on my new Intel NUC (thanks for all your advice on that) will be interesting to follow your issue. I am using Windows 10 pro on that but do monitor any issues folks are having with office 2016.

Best,
Al

Subject: Re: Help! Is it Jaws? Or Excel? Or my computer?

Hi Shirley,

I am having major issues on one of my Windows 7 work PC's with Office, in particular Outlook and Excel 2016 which are the two applications I use a lot. Both applications load, but if, for example, I press Control+Y in Outlook to go to a different folder or account then as soon as I press enter after going to said folder/account Outlook crashes.
If I use Control+Shift+Back Tab to go from the default Inbox to the folder list, then go to whichever folder or account I want and press enter say on that account' Inbox, Junkmail folder, delete items folder etc. it works.
Similarly in Excel everything is fine until I try to edit something or change sheets in a multy-sheet Excel file. If I press Control+Page Up or Control+Page Down or use Control+Shift+S to bring up a list of worksheets and go to a different one Jaws crashes/stops talking because Excel pops up with a message that something went wrong and the program has to close.
If I get rid of Jaws and get one of my sighted employees to change sheets or edit cells everything is fine.
I had two calls with Microsoft Accessibility today and unfortunately they were not able to help.
After one of the technical reps there agreed that I might want to try and do a System Restore to a few days ago (this all started happening yesterday out of the blue) I tried this. Windows 7 went through it's system restore process, rebooted and once I logged back in I received the message that system restore did not complete and no files or settings were changed. I tried several other restore points with the same result.
Interestingly enough when the agent first wanted to connect to my computer using the "MSDT" command at the run prompt nothing at all happened. Only after I rebooted the system this worked.
It seems something got corrupted somewhere, tomorrow I will first try to repair Office, if this doesn't help I might uninstall it and reinstall.
After that if I still have the problem I plan to remove Jaws entirely including user files and shared settings and then reinstall it and see if that helps.
If that also doesn't solve the problem obviously something is wrong on a more fundamental level, of course the fact that system restore doesn't work correctly would indicate it could be a Windows problem as well. If that is the case I guess I won't have much of a choice but to completely wipe the system, reinstall Windows, Jaws, Office, my accounting software, SQL and my store's point of sale system and so on; a major headache and at least 3 to 4 hours of work by the time I put back things like Acrobat Reader, Google Chrome, reinstall my printers and so on.
All of these other programs (my Sage 50 accounting, point of sale, IE and Chrome and so on seem to work just fine by the way, the problem seems to be limited to Outlook and Excel and maybe other Office programs, but I rarely use Word and so on.

Best regards,
Sieghard
