JAWS ducking up and down, but it's okay

Ashleigh Piccinino

Hello,

     I’ve been experiencing that thing where JAWS ducks in and out as it’s reading. However, this is with my headset with mike. It’s okay though; just hard reset screen reader with insert windows and f4.

Ashleigh Piccinino

Other than that, no major things here.

Hi,

Yes. The one I linked is unique in that various screen readers are represented (not just JAWS), welcomes Windows Insiders, news on upcoming Fall Creators Update and future developments are regularly posted, changelog of cumulative updates are posted on the day of their releases, and is actively monitored by Microsoft staff, particularly Narrator developers and folks working on other accessibility initiatives.

Cheers,

Joseph

Thanks Sieghard and also Matthew Horspool. The JAWSKEY + CTRL + ENTER is much more elegant than using the JAWS cursor

Hi Paul,

There is a good change the correct key stroke would have activate the mouseover and told you where to go. I am not
saying this works always, but it usually does. You press Insert+Control+Enter, Jaws will say something like "Change at
line
23", you then use "j", the jum command, and type in "23" to jump to line 23 which is where the other links start. I am
often surprised how many people don't know about such an important and essential command for web navigation.
Here is an example how this looks/sounds like when I log into my credit card processor's website (I used the speech
history to copy this):

* Reports on mouse over
* Terminal on mouse over - I press Insert+Control+Enter here and then hear the below:
change at line 13
Jump To Line dialog
Enter Line Number (1 to 46): edit - here I entered 13 followed by enter and then when I arrowed down I get the
following
links which a sighted user sees by hovering over the "Terminal" mouseover:
* Link Preauth
* visited Link Capture
* visited Link Purchase
* Link Void
* Link Refund

Best regards,
Sieghard

To maximize a window, hit WINDOWS + UP ARROW.

I wanted to share this shortcut with everyone, as I've seen a couple posts recently in which posters complain that
windows they have maximized have become unmaximized. This is a quick way to ensure your window is maximized.

Unfortunately LinkedIn has become more problematic with JAWS. I haven't made any profile changes lately but the design of LinkedIn has changed and there are labeling problems with some of the buttons on the pages. In the past I did get some telephone technical assistance from them but it was a result of an on line survey about LinkedIn that I participated in. They could definitely improve their web accessibility for screen reader users. I primarily use it for participation in professional groups which are quite useful.

Re: Which Antiviral Programs Now Work Best with JAWS?

Mario,

         Then avail yourself of the Microsoft website.  None of the formal documentation states anything in conflict with what I've offered.  If you have only Windows Defender running on a Windows 7 or earlier system it does not include an antivirus component.

          Two pertinent threads from answers.microsoft.com:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10/microsoft-security-essentials-for-windows-10/16ec3399-e20e-48a0-bf06-bf1208a864a7

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect_start/microsoft-security-essentials/5118072d-2a69-4a89-a416-864cf70ddd88

the second of which contains a direct link to one of quietman7's in-depth posts on BleepingComputer about best practices for security and that again reiterates what I've said and the Microsoft site itself says.

Windows Defender, prior to Windows 8, is not an antivirus product and if you don't have either Microsoft Security Essentials or some third-party antivirus or security suite running the conclusion is obvious.

when I allowed the MSA tech to take control of the laptop running Vista,
after about 3 hours, he fixed the issue that checking for updates got
stuck. after he finished, I noticed that there was only Windows Defender
installed as a program for protection. I asked him about also installing
Security Essentials, and told me what I previously posted. this guy was
not the guy that answers the calls, he was the technician (the guy at

Mario,

What you say is true for Windows 8 and later. Under Windows 7
Windows Defender remains an antimalware scanner only to this day and
Microsoft Security Essentials is the Microsoft antivirus under Windows 7.

To move within the virtual ribbons use tab or shift tab or the arrows.

But when I hit any of the arrows, tab and shift tab: Nothing!

So I guess I have to change some setting? Can anyone give me some suggestions on where to start?

some time ago when I was trying to fix my friend's laptop, at one point
the MS help desk tech said that Security Essentials was basicly phased
out and replaced by Windows Defender which is a combination of antivirus
and antimalware. it is also been improved over the years it was being
developed. it should work fine in systems running w7, 8/8.1 and 10.

Under Windows 10 and Windows 8 Windows Defender is an antivirus and
antimalware tool with realtime scanning. It is getting antiransomware
and several other capabilities integrated into it with the fall update
this year.

Under Windows 7 Windows Defender was an antimalware scanner and
Microsoft Security Essentials was the antivirus. Both could be used
together.

Microsoft Security Essentials is unnecessary under any version of
Windows later than Windows 7.

Thank you. I had the box for all users checked. It is now unchecked. That is what was checked when I loaded the program. Since I am the only user, I didn't think it would make any difference. I guess I will find out when I reboot, but this sounds as though it should help.

I'm not completely sure about your second problem. You say that it's set to come up after windows is loaded, but the problem you're describing sounds more like what happens if there are multiple user accounts on the system and JAWS is coming up before it knows what user account to load. In this instance it will use the settings of the last logged in user to use JAWS.
Can you check the following settings in Options/Basics.../Automatically Start JAWS...?
1. Start JAWS at the logon screen - in the scenario you're describing, this should be unchecked.
2. Start JAWS after logon for all users - this should also be unchecked.
3. Start JAWS after logon for this user - this should be set to Always.
