Good morning.

I’m running w7 and I installed J18.0 and when I open my Outlook 2010, I’ve noticed I don’t have much in the  menu bars/ribbons ETC. When I hit control N, to bring up a new email, and I’m in the message body and then hit the alt key; I only have what JAWS says is  virtual ribbons and then it says:

To move within the virtual ribbons use tab or shift tab or the arrows.

But when I hit any of the arrows, tab and shift tab: Nothing!

So I guess I have to change some setting? Can anyone give me some suggestions on where to start?

some time ago when I was trying to fix my friend's laptop, at one point
the MS help desk tech said that Security Essentials was basicly phased
out and replaced by Windows Defender which is a combination of antivirus
and antimalware. it is also been improved over the years it was being
developed. it should work fine in systems running w7, 8/8.1 and 10.

Under Windows 10 and Windows 8 Windows Defender is an antivirus and
antimalware tool with realtime scanning. It is getting antiransomware
and several other capabilities integrated into it with the fall update

Under Windows 7 Windows Defender was an antimalware scanner and
Microsoft Security Essentials was the antivirus. Both could be used

Microsoft Security Essentials is unnecessary under any version of
Windows later than Windows 7.

Thank you. I had the box for all users checked. It is now unchecked. That is what was checked when I loaded the program. Since I am the only user, I didn't think it would make any difference. I guess I will find out when I reboot, but this sounds as though it should help.

I'm not completely sure about your second problem. You say that it's set to come up after windows is loaded, but the problem you're describing sounds more like what happens if there are multiple user accounts on the system and JAWS is coming up before it knows what user account to load. In this instance it will use the settings of the last logged in user to use JAWS.
Can you check the following settings in Options/Basics.../Automatically Start JAWS...?
1. Start JAWS at the logon screen - in the scenario you're describing, this should be unchecked.
2. Start JAWS after logon for all users - this should also be unchecked.
3. Start JAWS after logon for this user - this should be set to Always.

Hi all,
JAWS 18, Windows 10. Google Chrome is the only browser that I use, at least for web pages. I still use IE to casually inspect RSS feeds but that's about it. I don't use Firefox at all - I could never get on with it, actually.
The only slight snag is that Flexible Web doesn't seem to be supported under Chrome, and I did rather like that in IE.

As I said, the simple solution is to install Google Chrome, using IE exclusively often is just not enough anymore and will continue to be more and more problematic.
You have to look at this like you look at apps on iOS, most of us use several map/GPS apps like Apple Maps and/or Google Maps along with Blindsquare, Seeing Eye GPS or Nearby Explorer. Most of us use various apps for doing OCR and identifying/recognizing objects, money, barcodes etc.
Using two browsers on the PC is no different, try Chrome and then use it either as your primary or secondary browser along with IE.
For basic
browsing Chrome is not a steep learning curve, all quick nav keys work just the same as in IE as these are Jaws functions and they are the same in all browsers.

Hello,

During the past few days, when I enter on a link from a web
site for a
specific page, sometimes I get a fairly long message saying
something about
"the security of this site cannot be verified". When this
happens I cannot
get it to go away; when I press alt + f4 or try to go back
to the previous
page Jaws just keeps repeating this message. This morning
it happened again
and I kept pressing alt + f4 about six or seven times and
finally it got me
off the internet.

Sometimes this occurs and sometimes not. The web sites I'm
speaking of are
ones that I've used regularly for a long time without any
problems .. This
does not happen every time and does not happen on all web
sites.

One of the web sites is accuweather.com .. I go to this
site, read the three
day local forecast, and then click on extended forecast".

Again, this problem does not occur every time and it does
happen on some
other web sites. I'm using Jaws 18, Windows 10, and IE 11.
Does anybody
have any thoughts on why this is happening? Any suggestions
are greatly
appreciated.

Hi Paul,
Newcomer to this list and this thread so apologies if I have got the wrong end of the stick!
However, RE mouseOver controls, there is a keystroke that simulates hovering the mouse in the virtual cursor. I think it is CTRL+INSERT+ENTER but don't quote me. Perhaps this will solve your problem.

I ran into a web site a couple years back that had mouse-over controls. They are frustrating.

This control, in particular, opened a menu when the user hovered the mouse. I found I could open the menu with the JAWS cursor, and I somehow managed to get to the menu options but don't remember the details.

Ultimately, I discovered that each of the menu options, when selected, took me to a unique URL. So my final solution was to simply bookmark the target URLs of each menu option. Rather than use the HAWS cursor to hover over the control and navigate to a menu option, I would simply select a bookmark, which turned out to be orders of magnitude more efficient.
It pays to be creative and think out of the box.

Maybe you can do something like that with your bank site?

Hi Paul,

There is a good change the correct key stroke would have activate the mouseover and told you where to go. I am not saying this works always, but it usually does. You press Insert+Control+Enter, Jaws will say something like "Change at line 23", you then use "j", the jum command, and type in "23" to jump to line 23 which is where the other links start. I am often surprised how many people don't know about such an important and essential command for web navigation.
Here is an example how this looks/sounds like when I log into my credit card processor's website (I used the speech history to copy this):

* Reports on mouse over
* Terminal on mouse over - I press Insert+Control+Enter here and then hear the below:
change at line 13
Jump To Line dialog
Enter Line Number (1 to 46): edit - here I entered 13 followed by enter and then when I arrowed down I get the following links which a sighted user sees by hovering over the "Terminal" mouseover:
* Link Preauth
* visited Link Capture
* visited Link Purchase
* Link Void
* Link Refund

Best regards,
Sieghard

Subject: Re: Mouse over on bank site
