One thing is that it can take quite long for Jaws to restart, I have seen it taking well over 30 seconds, usually I wait almost a minute and only if nothing happens I try other stuff. Interesting enough if I minimize all applications and then type “J” to go to the Jaws shortcut on my desktop Jaws sometimes starts up which means it apparently sometimes crashes and completely unloads in which case the Insert+Windows+F4 won’t work.

It always happens when I am using Microsoft software, including Outlook 2013, Word 2013 and Internet Explorer 11.

JAWS 17 works fine all the time, so I am unloading JAWS 18 and launching JAWS 17 until I can get this fix.

Any help will be appreciated.

Well, I guess that for the most part for me, when I VPN in I'm VPNing in for access to data that populates programs that are on my PC as well. So maybe this doesn't apply to all, or your, circumstances. I'm not remote loggin in to another computer to run programs on that computer. If you're looking to remotely access another computer via VPN, that may be a separate issue. Sorry for any miscommunication, Keith

Hello,

Using a Dell laptop with Windows 10, Jaws 18, MS Word 2016 …… What I describe below has been happening since I got this computer less than two months ago.

Two different things are happening when I want to delete a file:

1.  Sometimes when I press delete to get rid of a file Jaws says nothing and I have to press alt + tab to get back to the documents and that file is gone …… Jaws does not ask me if I’m sure I want to delete this file.

2.  Sometimes when I press delete Jaws says “this will cancel all transfers in progress” and tells me to press the space bar …… Whether I press the space bar or not Jaws repeatedly tells me this message …… I have to press alt + f4 several times to make this go away so I can alt tab back to the documents at which point that file has been deleted.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which scenario is going to happen when I want to delete a file.  Has anybody dealt with this before? …… Is it possibly some kind of setting that’s not set correctly? …… I just want to press delete and have Jaws ask me if I’m sure I want to delete as I’ve always done in the past.

Hi, Laura. Part of your problem is because something is not set correctly for the Recycle properties.

1. Find your Recycle Bin.

2. Press ALT plus ENTER to get into the properties of the Recycle Bin.

3. If you are in the General properties, which is what usually comes up first, tab until you see the following setting:

Display delete confirmation dialog

4. Make sure this is checked with the SpaceBar.

5. Tab to Apply and Press Enter.

6. Tab to OK and press ENTER again.

That should get back the “Are you sure?” dialog you should get when deleting a file.

The other problem is that JAWS is losing focus when you are trying to delete the file, and you are on a “Cancel button. This could be for a download in progress, or a Cancel button for the deletion itself.

Not sure but I suspect the backstage setting only takes effect after

One thing that will help if you haven't already done so, is open the File
Options menu. Alt, then f, then t.
Under general, tab to where it has a checkbox that says Show the Start
Screen and uncheck it.
Also, go down to Save and tab to where it says don't show the back stage
when opening or saving files and check it.
Tab to OK and hit enter.

Hi,
Press the f12 key at the top of your keyboard. This will bring up the
save as dialog in both Excel and Word. You could also press control s
or alt f and arrow down to the save as tab.

To get a USB keyboard which has both Windows keys, as well as both Application keys, call AbleNet

651-294-2200

Ask for a KeysUSee keyboard. They are available in several colors, and they also have buttons at the top which will mute or unmute the soundcard. This can be important if your soundcard becomes inadvertently muted. This often happens if one allows a sighted person to operate the computer. Often, instead of turning off the screen reader, the sound is turned off, making it difficult to get the sound unmuted.

I usually reverse hands, press the insert/Jaws key with my left hand and use the right hand to press Windows + F4, after you do it a few times it becomes quite natural and easy.

Hi List,

Actually, I have been having this same problem with the last 4 updates. When I am using JAWS 18 on my Windows 10 machine, it will work fine for a while; however, JAWS suddenly crashes without notice. It always happens when I am using Microsoft software, including Outlook 2013, Word 2013 and Internet Explorer 11.

The problem first occurred in the early versions of JAWS 18, then it was fixed in a few builds, then it started occurring again around January or February. The latest update worked fine for about 2 hours, so I thought they had it fixed again, but then it crashed.

When JAWS 18 crashes, I cannot seem to generate an error report and other screen readers won’t work properly either, so I have to turn off my PC and turn it on again with the on/off button.

JAWS 17 works fine all the time, so I am unloading JAWS 18 and launching JAWS 17 until I can get this fix.

                Any help will be appreciated.

                Thanks in advance,

                Don

I understand what you're saying about the "carousel" effect but I don't
think that is the issue in this case. There are only four choices ......
the one that is selected by default is not the one I need which is why it is
necessary to make a change in this box. I guess it comes down to utilizing
tech support from Freedom Scientific and/or Microsoft Disability Help or
finding a sighted person to come to my home ...... (heavy sigh)

These sites often use a "carousel" effect, which is a part of the site that
changes what it displays as a sighted user watches. When they see something
they like, a simple mouse click will launch that item. This carousel effect
can also be used in lists, and I agree that this is likely what Laura might
be experiencing.

Consider a list of choices that is displayed when you open a combo list
titled "beverages". Then picture that this list is restricted to just 4
items to save space on the web page. It could initially offer things like
coffee, tea, cocoa, and water. But as there are usually more than just those
four choices, the list begins to scroll through many other choices, changing
the list just like an escalator, which means that JAWS can't update the
changes in real time.

I wonder if it's possible to virtualize the list or the window to see if
that would freeze the list momentarily to allow us to view it. However if
the list is changing dynamically in the background it seems reasonable that
the virtualized list would soon be outdated.

I'm not sure what we can do with our current JAWS tools, but this might be
what we are experiencing.
