Hello Denise,

Auto Complete

you can turn auto-complete on and off in Excel Options. In Excel 2016, press Alt, F, T, DownArrow to Advanced, then Tab or press Alt + A until you're on "enable AutoComplete for cell values".

Cheers Kevin.

How Do I Customize JAWS 10.0...

Annabelle Susan Morison

To work in conjunction with a spectragram? I'm hopefully going to make ADX Trax Pro accessible to screenreaders, and I'm not sure how to configure JAWS to recognize the components of a spectragram. One of the guys at Audionamix, Steve Oliver, told me that the spectragram in ADX Trax Pro consists of many shapes. Here's what he says.

Regarding the spectrogram: The spectrogram is a visualization of the actual audio being processed. It is like a graph, where frequency (in Hertz) is the Y axis, and time is the X axis. Because the information is displayed dynamically, based on the sounds within the file, there are no preset shapes like the ones you described.

For example, imagine an audio file of you speaking the sentence "Hi, my name is Annabelle" while a police siren goes by in the background. On the spectrogram, your voice would appear as stacks of wavy lines (representing the fundamental frequency of your voice and the corresponding harmonics above it). Each word would have its own stack of wavy lines that would change depending on the word and how you said it, and the unique characteristics of your voice. Also there would be consonants sounds that might look like patches of noise in the higher frequency range. The siren would look like a long line slowly curving up and down from left to right. If I said the words instead of you, these shapes would change because of the qualities of my voice, and what speed I spoke at.

For these reasons there are almost infinite shapes that could be displayed in the spectrogram. Do you have any ideas how that might work with a screen reader? We'd certainly like to make it possible.

Re: Reading Read Only Calendar with JAWS

Hi,

Maybe you could try the passthrough key combo immediately before you try any of the necessary commands. JAWSkey / Insert plus 3 (not F3). This permits JAWS to ignore the next keystroke and passes the command through JAWS directly to the program. Or, at least, that's my understanding of it.

Hi Everyone,

I am required to use an application which contains a read only

box work with JAWS is to: (a) press enter on the read only field and
see if the calendar pops up anywhere on the page or (b) press the left
mouse button (insert+8) on the graphic button below the read only box.
However, I am unable to activate the calendar by following any of the
above two approaches. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could do

I am using JAWS 16, Windows 8.1 and Firefox.

I found that pressing spacebar on the message to select it and then pressint enter to read makes this possible. It didn’t used to; I could just read by pressing enter some time ago. However, this new space and enter thing—of course, separate key presses—has happened for a couple months or so. It’s annoying, but you can still get through mail that way.

Hi List,

I'm relatively new to JAWS after using Window-Eyes for years. I'm using the
latest Jaws 18 on a Windows 7 system running Outlook 2007.

When I press enter on the email message, JAWS automatically reads the
sender, subject etc. but then stops and never reads the message. The
"automatically read message" box is checked in settings.

The thing is that it won't read even with the arrow keys. It stays silent.
The "read line" command just says "blank" and the dedicated arrow keys and
the numpad arrow keys do/say nothing.

If I switch to the JAWS cursor, I first hear the subject then what must be a
menu because it says outlook adins, find etc. and if I keep going I hear all
the message headers and finally the message. But as soon as I switch back
to the PC cursor, I get nothing.

BTW - it still works correctly with Window-Eyes. I didn't try NVDA.

Any help would be appreciated.

Nancy

Word lists, pretty cool things!

Ashleigh Piccinino

Hello,

No, I’m not Smith, but I can give you a little tutorial on the word list. When you’re in a Microsoft Word document, or something else I presume and you want to bring up the word list, just hit insert CTRL and w. This’ll bring up the word list, and words are indexed by how many times they’ve been used. In other words, if you’ve used the word sociology a bunch of times in your document, it’ll show up with that number of uses behind it in the list. The words which’ve only been used once won’t have a number, but they’ll be near the bottom of the list. Here’s the neat thing though! If you search for a word—I’d do this by either trying to type a couple letters of it but searching the list by arrow works too--, you can press enter on the first time that word’s used. When your navigation quick keys are turned on (insert z), you can hit a plain w to go to the next instance of that word. However, IF YOU SEEK TO ARROW THROUGH this document while your quick-nav is running, you will have to turn it back on in order to find the next occurrence of your word. You cannot edit the document when this is on, so you’d have to turn it off beforehand. However, the word list gives you an idea of how many times you’ve used certain words/the whole documents worth of words common or not. If you need any more help, feel free to either send to apiccinino@... or write to the list. Yes, this goes for everyone here since, in my opinion, these aren’t really talked about. When you need extra help than I’ve provided, the JAWS help topics in training (JAWS window and alt h for the help) can assist you. Word lists are near the bottom of the books of training materials. If you’ve not updated this in a while, just press enter as if you were going to read and follow any instructions to download a new version of the book.

Thank you for reading, and I hope these tips help,

Ashleigh S. Piccinino

Hi All,

I am using JAWS 16 with Windows 8.1. On a new laptop that I was recently
given at work, I have been facing the following problem.
When I press keys that represent symbols on the keyboard, JAWS speaks out a
completely different name for the key than the one I entered.
For instance, if I press shift plus apostrophe for the quotation mark, JAWS
will read that as 'acute accent'.
Even if I press escape and get out of that edit field and try reading its
content, what JAWS speaks out is often different from what I typed.

While I am able to type what I want to after a couple of tries, this really
slows up the process. Further, JAWS also speaks out some letters with accent
or umlaut even when I simply type the letters.
What can I do to fix these issues? Thanks very much.

Best,
Rahul

Hello,

I had a somewhat similar issue just this week.

I called up VFO and got some answers for this. I am guessing if it is the same information as my situation it is caused by smart navigation. You can toggle this off if you want. While in Internet Explorer or whatever browser you are using, press insert-v. This gives you many settings related to the corresponding program. In the search box type smart for the first word that you are searching for. I had two matches. I cannot recall, but I think you tab to the two results. You can up/down arrow to the choices. You can make changes and tab to save or close or something. Sorry I am not familiar to recall the exact details, but I am sure you can follow those OK. Smile.

That fixed my issue. I asked the general purpose of smart navaigation. I was told that when JAWS recognized a table, it allows you to use the arrow keys to move around. It is to simplify tables. It is on by default.

I hope this helps.

To select different choices in the list above, use your space bar to rotate among the choices for that setting.

I was told that turning off smart navigation means that special settings for reading tables will not work. When turned on, smart navigation allows you move inside tables with just the arrow keys.
