Re: sending emails with gmail and jfw

Jed,

It appears from your description that you are using the Gmail web interface to send and receive e-mail messages and are wanting the activation of a "mailto" link to fire up a Gmail window, but using Firefox, your default browser.

This gets really messy since web browsers are not recognized as e-mail clients.

The only way I found to solve this issue when my partner wanted the exact same thing you do was to employ a third-party program called Affixa, which causes mailto links to fire up Gmail in your web browser of choice.  I cannot say whether or not it is accessible as far as setup in any way, but you may want to take a look at it to see if it might suit your needs:  https://www.affixa.com/desktop/#gmail

It is free for home use.

Re: Open Library: Will Protected DAISY Files From There Work With PAC Mate Omni?

Kelly Pierce

Kane,

This issue is fully documented on the Open Library website for others
who are interested. Open Library partners with NLS. As such, devices
that support speech synthesis or Braille output and can accept an NLS
authorization key work with Open Library. If an NLS key is on your
device, the book should be able to be accessed. The downside of Open
Library books is the lack of quality control. Several books had so
many scanning errors that I needed to obtain the print books and scan
them myself.

Hello. This message is going out to a couple of FS lists and to one

effectively first.

Just yesterday, someone on the Bookshare General Discussion List
turned me onto a tremendous-looking source for digitized books called
Open Library. I quickly found that two titles I've been looking for
are available for immediate, free download on Open Library (in DAISY
format) which were not available in any e-book form from NLS BARD,
Learning Ally, Bookshare, or even commercial sites such as the Kindle
Store. I am blown away by the wealth of what is out there on this
source.

Here's the problem: These are protected DAISY archives, requiring what
it calls a UAK (User Access Key) from Library of Congress. Now, it
just so happens that I was able successfully to load these titles onto
an old Book Sense XT that I've got which does happen to contain an
appropriate UAK needed for decrypting the files. But my Book Sense is
most likely on its last legs, being eight years old. The files will
not play on my NLS BARD Talking Book player, because it says I don't
have access permissions, even though it will do just fine with
unlocking archives downloaded from the NLS BARD site itself.

At any rate, I'd really like to be able to read these in Braille using
my PAC Mate Omni BX440. But I can't seem to find a valid UAK to load
onto the PAC Mate that will make this kind of DAISY archive openable.

I thought that perhaps loading a UAK from Learning Ally would do--that
is, the same key I would need to play DAISY-formatted Learning Ally
titles on that same PAC Mate. But when I tried to install the UAK,
the Learning Ally site came back with the error message that this key
is no longer valid.

Any solution for this? Or am I essentially out of luck insofar as
prepping any device other than my Book Sense XT for Open Library DAISY
titles?

Thanks.

Kind regards,

Kane Brolin

List Rules

When:
Saturday, 1 July 2017
12:00am to 1:00am
(GMT-04:00) America/New York

Description:
The following is the current version of the JFW Mailing List policies. These are sent out monthly, and also available from:

http://groups.io/g/jfw/wiki/List-Policies

**List Policies**

1: Keep it clean. We're a family list, and there are people here who probably don't want to hear everything *exactly* that's running through your head. If you wouldn't see it on TV, it doesn't belong in a post to the list. If you're not sure, email the administration before you post it to the list. Otherwise, you stand to see your posts moderated.

2: Stay on topic. We're a JFW-oriented list. That said, anything related to JFW, its functionality with programs etc is acceptable. If it doesn't have to do with JFW, it doesn't belong on the list. This includes, but isn't limited to, talk of other screen readers such as Window Eyes.

3: Listen to, and respect, the wishes of the admins/moderators. If you're asked by an admin or moderator to drop a subject, or take something to private emails (in the instance of two people carrying on a thread list-wide), please do so. If the subject is changed on a thread by an admin or moderator, it will be explained why in the email sent out with it. Please don't continue replying to the old subject.

4: Don't ask over the list for a position on the list administration. If you'd like to help out, it's of course welcome, but address the request to do so to the admin team, otherwise it'll be ignored. Requests are always welcome, whether help is being looked for or not. When help is needed, a post will be made to the list. The requests already received will be kept in mind.

5: Keep flaming to a minimum. This is not limited to flaming of each other, but goes beyond that, to flaming of products, opinions, ideas, suggestions, etc. Constructive criticism never hurts. Flame wars, especially public ones, both drive people from this list and are unwelcome here. either take the problem to private emails, or report the problem to list administration.

6. Respect the opinions and views of others. This is *very* important in any environment, most especially an online environment where the only gage one has on a person is what that person puts to writing. If you come off as hostile in your posting, whether you intended to or not, people will take it as such. Online, "face value" means just that. People make mistakes, people don't always have access to the same information you do. For that matter, people don't always have the same experience you do. If you know how someone can solve their problem, great. Suggest it to them and/or the list. Do *not* proceed to tell someone, on or off list, that they have no business posting. Repeat offenders of this particular rule will be banned for a week to 30 days, depending on the severity. Serious problems will be banned permanently.

As always, if there are problems or questions with regards these policies, don't hesitate to send them off-list to jfw+owner@groups.io

James,
List Admin

In Word 2016, one method that works for me is hit alt+q which brings up the help edit box, type character count and hit enter.
You will get page count, page number, word count, character count without spaces and character count with spaces, ...

Apparently, somewhere out there, there is also a classic menu that you can install so the menu looks like the older, more user friendly, menu system. That was referred to with a Google search.

Is it available from the proofing menu? Seems as if I recall, but it's been a while. Doing book reviews, and other publications, often requires an accurate word count, but Medicaid is seldom that exacting. Bureaucratic writing and literary style are usually mutually exclusive.

This is a good question.

As a Firefox user, I have wondered the same thing.

Subject: Closing a single tab in firefox

Hi all,

Can someone tell me how to close a single tab in firefox? There are times when I want to close a tab (to reduce clutter) but leave others open. Right now I get a warning that says I am about to close ## of tabs, but it seems to be an all or nothing.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Having challenge with Character count in microsoft office

One of the things being overlooked with all of the non-program-standard keystrokes is that they are probably screen reader specific and that throws a monkey wrench into everything if you ever have to change screen readers, even temporarily.

You're far better off using the program's, and in this case that's MS-Word, built-in keyboard shortcuts to get what you want.   That will almost never change at this point since the ribbons have been stable for some time now for the most part, and what's changed has been additions, not reassignment of existing shortcuts.

ALT+R, followed by W is always going to get the Word Count dialog for you, at least from Word 2010 forward.

Ctrl+w closes a single tab for me. It also works in Chorme.
