Open Library: Will Protected DAISY Files From There Work With PAC Mate Omni?
Kane Brolin
Hello. This message is going out to a couple of FS lists and to one
senior technologist, since I don't know who will be able to reach out effectively first. Just yesterday, someone on the Bookshare General Discussion List turned me onto a tremendous-looking source for digitized books called Open Library. I quickly found that two titles I've been looking for are available for immediate, free download on Open Library (in DAISY format) which were not available in any e-book form from NLS BARD, Learning Ally, Bookshare, or even commercial sites such as the Kindle Store. I am blown away by the wealth of what is out there on this source. Here's the problem: These are protected DAISY archives, requiring what it calls a UAK (User Access Key) from Library of Congress. Now, it just so happens that I was able successfully to load these titles onto an old Book Sense XT that I've got which does happen to contain an appropriate UAK needed for decrypting the files. But my Book Sense is most likely on its last legs, being eight years old. The files will not play on my NLS BARD Talking Book player, because it says I don't have access permissions, even though it will do just fine with unlocking archives downloaded from the NLS BARD site itself. At any rate, I'd really like to be able to read these in Braille using my PAC Mate Omni BX440. But I can't seem to find a valid UAK to load onto the PAC Mate that will make this kind of DAISY archive openable. I thought that perhaps loading a UAK from Learning Ally would do--that is, the same key I would need to play DAISY-formatted Learning Ally titles on that same PAC Mate. But when I tried to install the UAK, the Learning Ally site came back with the error message that this key is no longer valid. Any solution for this? Or am I essentially out of luck insofar as prepping any device other than my Book Sense XT for Open Library DAISY titles? Thanks. Kind regards, Kane Brolin

Re: Big problem with JAWS and Excel.
allan.milne@...
hello,
Just joined this group and first post so please be gentle ... :D I too have this issue with latest update of Jaws 18, Windows 10 and Excel 2016. Some spreadsheets work fine, others do not - does not seem to relate to the size of the sheet or its complexity, in fact I can't find any correlation between the sheet and this abnormal behaviour. The problem often starts with very, very slow (>10 seconds) response to any keystrokes in Excel to, for example, use the arrows to move to the next cell. It can then get progressively worse with no apparent speech at all - leaving me in total ignorance of what is going on; sometimes I am able to ctrl-alt-del to the task manager and use this to close the Excel process but on a couple of occasions Jaws itself seems to have stopped and I have to restart. ) I note the comment from one reply about non-local files; mine are all local but I do have them in my OneDrive folder and the office upload centre seems also to be doing some magic with them and wonder if this has anything to do with it. I also note that no solution has yet been posted; I really do need a fix for this as I use Excel a great deal for my personal information and this is really starting to have a detrimental effect. regards, Allan

Re: How to turn off request to save your password, in FireFox
Peter,
Open a new tab and then copy and paste what follows into the address edit box: about:preferences#security On this page I am presuming you will find the checkbox for "Remember logins for sites" is checked. Uncheck it. -- Brian - Windows 10 Home, 64-Bit, Version 1703, Build 15063 (dot level on request - it changes too often to keep in signature)

How to turn off request to save your password, in FireFox
Peter Tesar
Hello,
Recently, my FireFox always asks if I want to save the password that I just used. Tabbing through the options, there is no "do not ask again" check box. Is there a way to turn it off permanently? Peter T.

Mario
from a note I made, if possible try using another screen reader like
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
NVDA and pressing control+shift+g. or try a different version of JAWS. you can also try alt r w, or alt t w. you then might need to use the JAWS cursor to find the info you need.

number announcement issue
Mario
I recently noticed that JAWS is reading some instances of single digit
numbers incorrectly, such as "Join us on Thursday, June 29th at 8th PM Eastern, 7th PM Central, 6th PM Mountain, and 5 PM Pacific." could this be due to a text encoding issue or is there a setting in JAWS that is the culprit? I looked in the application and default dictionary but don't find any entries inside or outside the English folder.

You can use Kurzweil to do PDF files. It will read tables if
you have that option set, I believe, under the settings / reading
options.

That's handy, in case of editing (I never saw one of these without typos), or scrawling notes. The last NAB I had actually had provision for notes, just as a print bible would. I never took any.

Hi, Kimber. Use CONTROL plus W to close a single tab. What you are actually doing is closing a single window, and that window is a tab in Firefox.

Have you tried using either Control plus F4, or Control plus W to close one tab? That key stroke works in IE and in Chrome. You may want to try these and see if it works for you!
