Pasting into a command window

Scott Wheat

Hello,

Using JAWS 18, how can I paste the clipboard contents into a command window.

You can not simply press ctrl-v. Also, you can’t hit the context key and get a menu and select paste.

When using WindowEyes, I could route the mouse pointer to the upper left or upper right corner of the window, press the key for a right click which would bring up the context menu and then you select edit and paste.

I can not figure out how to do this with JAWS.

Thanks for any help.

Scott

I use a bleutooth keyboard with my iOS devices if I need to type more than a word or two.

But, iOS still won’t handle many of the work related tasks that one uses a computer for.

JAWS is touch-screen-enabled.  However, unlike most of today’s smart phones, it’s my understanding that they’re not required. In other words, just because you have a touch screen doesn’t mean you must use it.  I had to upgrade my phone last year, and everything decent these days is touch-enabled, but I still dislike the things, and hope and pray they never become mandatory in computing.

I’m a long-time JAWS user, though certainly not an expert or programmer. I am totally blind. I need to upgrade both JAWS (currently running version 16 on Windows 8 computers) and get a new computer. When I last got new computers I avoided the touch screen by customizing both a desktop and a laptop. I am looking for information on how JAWS is doing with these PCs with touch screens, does it work at all? If not, can they be disabled?  And how much sighted assistance I might need out of the box with a new PC to get things up and running?

I’m not sure what kind of computer I’m going to get; I’m shopping now, but it will be a high performance, capacity computer. I’m a professional who probably uses my computer about 12 hours per day, or more. In addition to the usual entertainment purposes, I use MS Office continuously, Online learning management software, and I analyze data using large datasets in SAS, STATA or SPSS (depending upon what features of accessibility and computing I need at the time). In other words, I tend to melt down or crash your average computer with the specks generally recommended for JAWS users within 3 months, so I tend to go way up scale with a better processer and large amounts of memory. However, I’ve found with high performance computers out of the box I have difficulties with JAWS; for example they are set up for surround sound or have some kind of screen setting and JAWS will not work until I can find a sighted person to customize the sound or other settings for me.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a high performance computer that will work well with JAWS? Any suggestions on where I can get quick, useful, information about how JAWS is performing with all-in-one touch screen enabled computers?

15 seconds behind the instruction I am given by the help

as a sighted person explained to me, "David, I have no idea

Microsoft was doing a remote access. The specific problem?
Setting up a VPN. The server says I am not connected yet
the person at Microsoft could not see that problem and had
no idea what I was talking about. What screen readers read

capable of duplicating what the sighted see on the computer

sighted cannot see it. It could also be as simple as, the
person at Microsoft can't see what is under their own nose.

Hi Laura,

Sometimes Alt+f followed by "x" works, it brings up the File
menu in Outlook and "x" is the key shortcut for "Exit".

You could also try to use Jaws Key+3 on the number ow, the
"Pass Key Through" command, then do Alt+F4 and see if that
works.

If all else fails just turn the computer off or pull the
plug, it isn't something you want to do all the time, but it
usually doesn't hurt.

the granddaddies of the sound card business., going back to the 1980's, or
early '90's. They were something of a novelty at first, but one must walk

yep, same issue I'm having.

at the end of one of Tom's replys, he mentioned about a setting in JAWS.
I wonder if he meant the Cell verbosity, which in my case, it's set to
contents and coordinates. but changing it to contents only is not
practical. these are the only choices for cell verbosity. maybe there's
another setting to adjust?

At first it would not save. I got some sort of error.
Then I read Joseph's message below and learned about compialing. I did
the whole thing over cut and pasted what Tom provided.
I did the ctrl S and I was told it compiled.
But it still is reading the contents and then the coordinates.
It didn't change the behavior.
Here is what I pasted.
Script SayCell()
If OnSpreadSheet()
&& !OnFormulaBar() then
SayCell()
if CellReadingVerbosity() == readCellContentsAndCoordinates then
SayActiveCellCoordinates()

EndIf

I am so sorry to keep pestering.

I did what you said, I opened excel, insert 0 and found that section in
the script.

What you wrote is exactly what it already says.

Which part do we change to reverse the information?

I have no idea at all what the ! () && have to do with anything so I
don’t know what it is that I need to change.

It mentions something about verbosity set to
*readCellContentsAndCoordinates *Which is the default choice

Do we need to find the Verbosity script to change that to say
*readCellCoordinatesANDContents*

Or is that what I need to do right here in this section you pointed out?

Ok, I will give this a go.

Open excel

Then open the script manager using jawsKey and zero on the number row

This will bring up the excel scripts in the script manager

Then do a search using control F searching for “*Script SayCell()” with
out the quotes *

*Here is where you can make the modification so that is reads like the
following *

**

*Script SayCell()*

*If OnSpreadSheet()*

*&& !OnFormulaBar() then*

* SayCell()*

* if CellReadingVerbosity() == readCellContentsAndCoordinates then*

* SayActiveCellCoordinates()*

* Endif*

*EndIf*

*EndScript*

**

*You will see that I just moved the line Script SayCell() up 3 lines so
that it is before *

* if CellReadingVerbosity() == readCellContentsAndCoordinates then*

**

*That is the only change needed but now you need to compile and save the
file.*

*When you open the jaws script manager using JawsKey and zero Jaws
automatically creates a copy of the excel scripts in your personal
folder and this is where jaws looks for scripts first so it will pick up
any new or modified scripts.*

*To invoke the compile and save you simply press control and the letter
S. Jaws will announce compile complete you can then use alt F4 to close
the script manager. *

Your changes will take effect immediately.

If you want to back out of the changes you can go to your jaws personal
folders

c:\Users\userid\AppData \Roaming \Freedom Scientific\JAWS\18.0\Settings\enu

here you can delete the excel.jsb and excel.jss files and you are good
to go.

Here is my problem.  When phoning Microsoft disability help line, what JAWS is reading out to me is different to what they are seeing on my laptop screen.  I know JAWS is about 15 seconds behind the instruction I am given by the help desk.  But, they can’t see the problem I am having because as a sighted person explained to me, “David, I have no idea where you are on the screen.”  She was sitting next to me, Microsoft was doing a remote access.  The specific problem?  Setting up a VPN.  The server says I am not connected yet the person at Microsoft could not see that problem and had no idea what I was talking about. What screen readers read out is not the same as what the sighted see.  Is JAWS capable of duplicating what the sighted see on the computer screen? It’s maddening when you have a problem and the sighted cannot see it. It could also be as simple as, the person at Microsoft can’t see what is under their own nose.  Who, knows.

Mario,
After doing all of this and rearranging a few lines.
I deleted the entire script entry.
Guess what happened?
Not a thing!
Without that stuff in there it still says the contents and then the coordinates.
So the answer must be tied to something else.
Shannon
P.s.
I copied all of the jaws excel script into note pad for back up before I did anything.

yep, same issue I'm having.

at the end of one of Tom's replys, he mentioned about a setting in JAWS.
I wonder if he meant the Cell verbosity, which in my case, it's set to
contents and coordinates. but changing it to contents only is not
practical. these are the only choices for cell verbosity. maybe there's
another setting to adjust?

Hi all,
I gave up intrying to over think it and just did a cut and paste.
Script SayCell()
If OnSpreadSheet()

SayCell()
if CellReadingVerbosity() == readCellContentsAndCoordinates then
SayActiveCellCoordinates()

It isn't that I cannot use JAWS, it is that from the factor a couple of
computers I got had settings that were apparently incompatible with JAWS. In
one case it was a visual setting and in another case it was a setting
related to the sound settings--the computer was set up for something called
sound blaster and those settings didn't work with JAWS. Once a sighted
person spent some time on the phone with me and tech support, we were able
to figure it out and get it all to work, but I'm a few hundred miles from

Where would I find the setting route JAWS to PC curser?

I’ve run into this with every screen reader I’ve used.

I think Jaws has more focus issues than some, but did you try switching cursors or making sure the jaws cursor was routed to the PC cursor?

I know how crazy making this stuff is too.

Who, knows.

I use google calendar on my computer and phone, and you can get alerts, if that's what you mean in terms of an alarm. If it's a morning alarm you are wanting than I'm not sure. I've had rather bad luck all the way around with Microsoft calendar

I'm looking for an accessible appointment calendar that has an alarm
system as well. I had a talking clock program and something called
anytime deluxe that worked beautifully with Windows 7 but won't work
with Windows 10. My Thunderbird email program calendar doesn't seem to
fit the bill. Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: Modifying scripts for cell coordinates, was Excel bothers me How to customize it?

Mario

yep, same issue I'm having.

at the end of one of Tom's replys, he mentioned about a setting in JAWS.
I wonder if he meant the Cell verbosity, which in my case, it's set to
contents and coordinates. but changing it to contents only is not
practical. these are the only choices for cell verbosity. maybe there's
another setting to adjust?

How to customize it?

Hi all,
I gave up intrying to over think it and just did a cut and paste.
Script SayCell()
If OnSpreadSheet()
&& !OnFormulaBar() then
SayCell()
if CellReadingVerbosity() == readCellContentsAndCoordinates then
SayActiveCellCoordinates()
Endif
EndIf
EndScript

Hi,
Was the script compiled at all? You need to compile the script
(Control+S) before it takes effect.
Cheers,
Joseph

Tom, I followed along but the coordinates are still announced after the
contents. I don't understand why does it not work for me, might I have
to do a repair of JAWS?

We are moving the line from between the endIF statements to before the

* if CellReadingVerbosity() == readCellContentsAndCoordinates then*

statement.

I’ve been following this, as I haven’t done any cookbook mods to a
script for a good while. I think Tom is inserting the line “SayCell()”
immediately prior to “*if CellReadingVerbosity” . . ., and that makes
the change. If all else fails, try using cut-and-paste, to avoid
mistyping. Delete the original line, and paste from the clipboard.*

Tom,

I am so sorry to keep pestering.

I did what you said, I opened excel, insert 0 and found that section in
the script.

What you wrote is exactly what it already says.

Which part do we change to reverse the information?

I have no idea at all what the ! () && have to do with anything so I
don’t know what it is that I need to change.

It mentions something about verbosity set to
*readCellContentsAndCoordinates *Which is the default choice

Do we need to find the Verbosity script to change that to say
*readCellCoordinatesANDContents*

Or is that what I need to do right here in this section you pointed out?

Thanks a lot

me How to customize it?

Ok, I will give this a go.

Open excel

Then open the script manager using jawsKey and zero on the number row

This will bring up the excel scripts in the script manager

Then do a search using control F searching for “*Script SayCell()” with
out the quotes *

*Here is where you can make the modification so that is reads like the
following *

**

*Script SayCell()*

*If OnSpreadSheet()*

*&& !OnFormulaBar() then*

* SayCell()*

* if CellReadingVerbosity() == readCellContentsAndCoordinates then*

* SayActiveCellCoordinates()*

* Endif*

*EndIf*

*EndScript*

If you want to back out of the changes you can go to your jaws personal
folders

c:\Users\userid\AppData \Roaming \Freedom Scientific\JAWS\18.0\Settings\enu

here you can delete the excel.jsb and excel.jss files and you are good
to go.

Tom,

To someone who is not a programmer, or doesn’t know the first thing
about programming, this still is not terribly useful.

If you could give file names and specific instructions how to do this
without screwing up the original scripts or how to safely back them up
first, that would be very useful.

Or, maybe those of us who are completely clueless shouldn’t even monkey
with this.

This wasn't a new script but which script to change and how to change
it. Adding a new script by the same name at the end won't fix it
because jaws will just the first one.

I should have been more descriptive and said that you needed to locate
the existing script and make the modification as shown in the example.

The only way I can find to change the order is by changing the script.
Below is the script

*Script SayCell()*

*If OnSpreadSheet()*

*&& !OnFormulaBar() then*

* SayCell()*

* if CellReadingVerbosity() == readCellContentsAndCoordinates then*

* SayActiveCellCoordinates()*

* Endif*

*; SayCell()*

*EndIf*

*EndScript*

I commented out the line

* SayCell()*

*And copied it And pasted it in the script just above the third “if”
statement as shown above *

Thank you, Do I have to do this for every spread sheet.?

I want to hear the coordenants before the contents not after. I want to

I looked around and found the spot to turn off the coordinates but not
how to reverse the order of what is spoken. Is this one of the advanced
settings of the verbosity settings?

Thanks again

I can help you with the column headers, but I’m not sure why my
coordinates speak after the data.

To set the column headers to read the way you want do the following:

One, Go to a1 and tap the alt key to bring up the upper ribbon and arrow
to the formulas tab.

2. down arrow to the lower ribbon and right arrow to the Define Names tab.

3. Hit enter.

4. Hit alt+n to create a new name.

5. Write the word “title” without the quotes and hit enter.

6. tab to the close button and hit spacebar.

Now, when you arrow down a column, it will speak the contents of the
cell, but if you right arrow or tab, you will hear the column title. As
you down arrow, you will also hear the row title.

I hope that helps,

Richard

Hi all,

I use spread sheets every single day.

I have opened an excel sheet and when I am arrowing through it I am
hearing things that are just…. Yucky!

1there is this annoying voice that speaks the cell coordinates.

I have futzed around with the voices so what I don’t know is which one
of the voices is doing this. It is the same one that says the status of
a message in Outlook un-read, forwarded and replied. And gives the
erroneous indexes of the messages. (for some reason it always gives x of
44.)

2I don’t like hearing the contents and then the cell coordinates after.

I want to reverse the order. How can I do that?

3 How to make the entire first row column headers and have it only
report when I change columns? I don’t want to hear it when I stay in the
same column.

Thanks

Shannon
