Re: Jaws at startup

James Homuth

I don't think you'll do any harm by leaving JAWS in MSConfig. If memory
serves, I'm pretty sure Windows puts every program in there whether it needs
to be there or not. Because JAWS starts as a service when you set it to
start automatically, I actually wonder if in that case it doesn't bypass
MSConfig altogether anyway. Of course I've not tested that theory, so your
milage may vary.

Hi all,

I use spread sheets every single day.

I have opened an excel sheet and when I am arrowing through it I am hearing things that are just…. Yucky!

1                     there is this annoying voice that speaks the cell coordinates.

I have futzed around with the voices so what I don’t know is which one of the voices is doing this.  It is the same one that says the status of a message in Outlook un-read, forwarded and replied.  And gives the erroneous indexes of the messages. (for some reason it always gives x of 44.)

2                     I don’t like hearing the contents and then the cell coordinates after.

I want to reverse the order. How can I do that?

3      How to make the entire first row  column headers and have it only report when I change columns? I don’t want to hear it when I stay in the same column.

Thanks

Shannon

I found The voice that speaks cell coordinates in Excel

Shannon

Mario,

I found it!!!

The curser/voice that is saying that stuff like the Un-read, forwarded, replied and the cell coordinates is the Tooter Message voice.
Funny I thought I had turned that off but... obviously I didn't.
Being set to a different voice is choppy, at best.
I'll try to change it to match the PC curser voice and see if that gets smoother.

Can you turn it off? If you do What else do you lose?

I want to hear the coordinates before the contents and the only choices are contents no coordinates or contents with coordinates.

Mario,
I have fiddled around with all of the voices. I don't remember which curser voiceI assigned to what?. I also can't remember how to change it.
I thought some of you users would know which curser voice says what?
Maybe I should go back to factory defaults? But I don't know how to do that unless I uninstall and reinstall. But if I do that don't I have a problem with licensing?
All of your cursers use the same voice? JAWS is a bit confusing with all the cursers.

I sent you a message off list with a template attached with the title
row predefined at a1 on all 4 worksheets in the workbook.
However, I made the mistake of saving it after doing sheet 4. So, when

If you choose to use it, you will need to open that template file in
Excel and move up to sheet 1 and save it again.
Sorry about that.

With the column heading on will I still have to listen to the contents

I just read the Popular applications portion of the documentation.
Unless someone does chime in and tell me/us we are wrong there are only
two options
Cell Verbosity
This option controls whether to announce both cell content and
coordinates or only cell content as cells are navigated. The default
setting is to announce both cell content and coordinates.

I just don’t like that. I want to know where I am first then what is in
the cell. That is another reason to use the column headings or titles.
This may be my first feature request.

This section also mentions something about document settings. This may
be where that title section can be done for documents that are similar
in naming

Workbook Settings
This option controls whether workbook settings are set for the settings
file to be an exact match of the current file name, or a best match for
the current file name. The default is exact match.
What do you think? Would this hold on to the Jaws setting for column and
row titles?

I can help you with the column headers, but I’m not sure why my

To set the column headers to read the way you want do the following:
One, Go to a1 and tap the alt key to bring up the upper ribbon and arrow
to the formulas tab.
2. down arrow to the lower ribbon and right arrow to the Define Names tab.
3. Hit enter.
4. Hit alt+n to create a new name.
5. Write the word “title” without the quotes and hit enter.
6. tab to the close button and hit spacebar.
Now, when you arrow down a column, it will speak the contents of the
cell, but if you right arrow or tab, you will hear the column title. As
you down arrow, you will also hear the row title.
I hope that helps,

Hi. well, you can code it by hand, in notepad, like java, but c++, c# you use visual studio 2017 community edition, which has android, ios, and other languages, for designing windows apps, ios, android. Doing a diploma of software development and using jaws 18, windows 10 64 bit pro, and learning about cloud services, using amazon webservices. So, yes, you use the c++ project in visual studio, and then use the designer to then add your controls, like buttons, etc, then use the code editor using the procedure stubs, or click events, in visual studio. You could also use eclipse for java development and for the latest mac and ios, apple has developed swift, you can use that, but only on mac, and use voice over. So that’s a few ideas for you. Hope that helps. With the designer, you may need sighted help, as a double check, as well, had to have sighted help when I was developing a windows mobile claculatorcalculator for my certificate iv programming which I did online from http://www.upskilled.edu.au and I use http://www.pluralsight.com, which is very accessible, you can read transcripts of courses, listen to video, and also download exercise files.

Hope this helps.

4.  Hit alt+n to create a new name.

5.  Write the word “title” without the quotes and hit enter.

6.  tab to the close button and hit spacebar.

Now, when you arrow down a column, it will speak the contents of the cell, but if you right arrow or tab, you will hear the column title.  As you down arrow, you will also hear the row title.

I hope that helps,

Richard

Subject: Excel bothers me How to customize it?

Thanks

Shannon

Yes, Mike it is really great. I've used it a couple of times today. I'll change a lot more often than I once would have done.

Hi All,

I thought some of you might be interested, or would find this keystroke beneficial.

Assigning A Keystroke To Adjust Punctuation On The Fly:

1. Press, Insert + F2, to open the Jaws Manager.
2. Go to Keyboard Manager and press enter.
3. Navigate to Default, & then tab 1 time to get into the list of options.
4. In the Default keyboard manager list navigate to Set Punctuation Level
If it says none. That means there has not been a keystroke assigned.
5. Press the Alt key to open the menues, & right arrow to Action. Then down arrow to Add Keystroke, & press enter. Or press control + A which is the
shortcut for asigning a keystroke.
6. Insert a keystroke combination like control + dash for example. If the
combination is already being used for another command jaws will tell you.
Doing this in the Default Keyboard Manager, allows this keystroke to be used
in all aplications.
7. Tab to the Okay button, press the spacebar, then a dialogue will open asking
if you are sure you want to modify the default JKM. Press the spacebar on
the Yes option.

Now, every time you press the control + dash keystroke it changes the
punctuation level. So press the control + dash keystroke until you hear
the punctuation level you want.

If you ever want to change or remove the keystroke, simply repeat the above steps.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Good, and the tips given here give me encouragement that

Carolyn,

I did get help from others on this list. I shut down those
programs through the task bar and then was able to shut down
the computer correctly. When I turned it on this morning
everything seems to be working as it should ......
Fingers crossed (smile). Thanks for your support.

I hope you get help, Laura. So far, when that happens to me,
I call on my husband if in the room, otherwise, Windows X,

do, when I get stuck like a bee in a spider web.

Hi, Richard. CONTROL plus ALT plus T does not give me the
Task Manager. I must use CONTROL plus SHIFT plus ESCAPE.

Try, control+alt+t

Then, in the list of open processes, arrow down until you
find Outlook, then you can either tab to End Task or hit
Alt+e. You may be asked to confirm that you want to end the
task.

It sounds like your Outlook process may be stuck and you
need to use task manager to end the process.

Hi, Laura. Try using ALT plus the Space Bar. Then Arrow up
to close, and press ENTER. This should allow you to get out
of Word, and back to where your keys work as usual.

Re: Adblocker question

Mike B. <mb69mach1@...>

Hi Sandra,

These steps are for IE:
Here's the file path of where you want to go:
C:\Program Files\Adblock Plus for IE\html\templates\index.html

1. Open Ad Block Plust in the Programs Files folder.
2. Open the HTML folder.
3. Open the Templates folder & inside you'll find:
firstRun.html
These are the settings when you first installed the program & are the default settings.

index.html
Open this to change your options / settings.  Arrow down to, Allow some non-intrusive advertising, & uncheck this box if you don't want any ads to show.

For Chrome & Firefox:
In both Firefox and Chrome in their current releases, Adblock Plus puts a button on the main toolbar to the right of the address box.  It looks like a small red octagon with ABP in the middle for both, but on Firefox there is a small dropdown arrow on the right side of the button.

In Chrome, if you click on it you get something that appears to be a menu, but these days I doubt it is a menu, but at the bottom of whatever object it is there is a button or link for Options.

In Firefox, if the button is activated a dropdown menu appears with Options as the last menu item.  A button to contribute to Adblock Plus appears below that Options item.

Brian

Poor Brian. Poor well-meaning but misguided Brian. (I'm giving him a hard time as we have been having conversation off list.)

Mario, let me help you out.

If you're using Adblock Plus on Internet Explorer, the installer is a good old-fashioned Execute file. It creates a folder in Program Files, which is what Mike referred to earlier. In that sense, it is a program of sorts. And the way you edit the settings for Internet explorer is from an HTML document in that folder, which is the address Mike referenced.

Brian is correct that in Firefox (and presumably in Chrome too) it's an extension or add-on. So you are correct that it doesn't create a program folder for you. However, Brian can see things we can't see, like toolbars. So he's directing you to a toolbar which would be perfectly correct if you could find it. I wish we could access it that way, because hovering over that toolbar button shows you the number of ads blocked on the current page, which I think would be kind of fun to see. But it doesn't work that way for us. The good news, however, is that in Firefox, on the Tools menu, at the very bottom--right below Options--is an Adblock Plus submenu (as JAWS reads it), that will take you to the options screen. You don't get to see how many ads have been blocked, but you can easily manage your settings that way.
Hope that clears up any confusion.
Brad

Hello,

I’ve successfully used Adblock for a while, but unfortunately, because I don’t often actually have to actively do anything, and now want to change some settings, I have plum forgotten how to get to it using JAWS. Please respond with ideas. thanks!
