Subject: Punctuation Level, How To Change It On The Fly For Jaws Users

Hi All,

I thought some of you might be interested, or would find this keystroke beneficial.

Assigning A Keystroke To Adjust Punctuation On The Fly:

1. Press, Insert + F2, to open the Jaws Manager.
2. Go to Keyboard Manager and press enter.
3. Navigate to Default, & then tab 1 time to get into the list of options.
4. In the Default keyboard manager list navigate to Set Punctuation Level
If it says none.  That means there has not been a keystroke assigned.
5. Press the Alt key to open the menues, & right arrow to Action. Then down arrow to Add Keystroke, & press enter.  Or press control + A which is the
shortcut for asigning a keystroke.
6. Insert a keystroke combination like control + dash for example. If the
combination is already being used for another command jaws will tell you.
Doing this in the Default Keyboard Manager, allows this keystroke to be used
in all aplications.
7. Tab to the Okay button, press the spacebar, then a dialogue will open asking
if you are sure you want to modify the default JKM. Press the spacebar on
the Yes option.

Now, every time you press the control + dash keystroke it changes the
punctuation level.  So press the control + dash keystroke until you hear
the punctuation level you want.

If you ever want to change or remove the keystroke, simply repeat the above steps.

Take care.  Mike.  Go Dodgers!

Hi all,

I use spread sheets every single day.

I have opened an excel sheet and when I am arrowing through it I am hearing things that are just…. Yucky!

1 there is this annoying voice that speaks the cell
coordinates.

I have futzed around with the voices so what I don’t know is which one of the voices is doing this. It is the same one that says the status of a message in Outlook un-read, forwarded and replied. And gives the erroneous indexes of the messages. (for some reason it always gives x of
44.)

2 I don’t like hearing the contents and then the
cell coordinates after.

I want to reverse the order. How can I do that?

3 How to make the entire first row column headers and have it only
report when I change columns? I don’t want to hear it when I stay in the same column.

Thanks

Shannon

Re: Excel bothers me How to customize it?

Shannon

Thanks,

Where will that information be placed Title then heading, Contents then coordinates or will it append to the end contents, coordinates, then column heading?

With the column heading on will I still have to listen to the contents then the coordinates?

I just read the  Popular applications  portion of the documentation.

Unless someone  does chime in and tell me/us we are wrong there are only two options

Cell Verbosity

This option controls whether to announce both cell content and coordinates or only cell content as cells are navigated. The default setting is to announce both cell content and coordinates.

I just don’t like that. I want to know where I am first then what is in the cell. That is another reason to use the column headings or titles.

This may be my first feature request.

This section also mentions something about document settings. This may be where that title section can be done for documents that are similar in naming

Workbook Settings

This option controls whether workbook settings are set for the settings file to be an exact match of the current file name, or a best match for the current file name. The default is exact match.

What do you think? Would this hold on to the Jaws setting for column and row titles?

Thanks again

To set the column headers to read the way you want do the following:

2.  down arrow to the lower ribbon and right arrow to the Define Names tab.

5.  Write the word “title” without the quotes and hit enter.

6.  tab to the close button and hit spacebar.

What about a template?  Set it up the way you want it, then use it to create other spreadsheets.  Not sure if this will work, but it’s worth a try.  As for the order of data Vs. coordinates, I don’t think I ever remember a spreadsheet announcing the coordinates first.

insert+c will announce the coordinates of the cell you are in.  If you have lots of data in a cell, that would override it reading that info and tell you which cell you are in.  I’m not sure doing that for each cell would bevery practicle.  I hope there is a way for you to make that the default.

Programming Language

Annabelle Susan Morison

Hi, it's Annabelle.
How would I design an app that can be fully recognized by screenreaders like JAWS? Is there a specific programming language I may have to learn? I could be wrong, but isn't there a specific set of language codes that should be implemented, like how JAWS recognizes the browser of the Windows Operating Systems, for example, that which is found within Windows Explorer? I'd like to try the C++ Programming Language, recommended to me by my friend, Markus Johnson, but I'm not sure how to configure codes for things like buttons, checkboxes, listboxes, comboboxes, hotkeys, and radiobuttons. Do I just write these codes in a plain text editor like Notepad? I'm confused on this one!

Hi,

From the run dialog, windows-r type or paste the below line
and press enter.
shutdown -f -s -t 0

This should force your computer to shutdown.
If you have any open documents that are not saved, it is
best to save them before doing this as it forces the machine
to shut off regardless if you have documents open and your
changes won't be saved.

Re: Excel bothers me How to customize it?

Shannon

Richard,

Thank you, Do I have to do this for every spread sheet.?

I want to hear the coordenants before the contents not after. I want to hear A2, meadows plaza not Meadows plaza A2

I looked around and found the spot to turn off the coordinates but not how to reverse the order of what is spoken. Is this one of the advanced settings of the verbosity settings?

Thanks again

Shannon

I can help you with the column headers, but I’m not sure why my coordinates speak after the data.

To set the column headers to read the way you want do the following:

One, Go to a1 and tap the alt key to bring up the upper ribbon and arrow to the formulas tab.

2.  down arrow to the lower ribbon and right arrow to the Define Names tab.

3.  Hit enter.

4.  Hit alt+n to create a new name.

5.  Write the word “title” without the quotes and hit enter.

6.  tab to the close button and hit spacebar.

Now, when you arrow down a column, it will speak the contents of the cell, but if you right arrow or tab, you will hear the column title.  As you down arrow, you will also hear the row title.

I hope that helps,

Richard

Hi all,

I use spread sheets every single day.

I have opened an excel sheet and when I am arrowing through it I am hearing things that are just…. Yucky!

1                     there is this annoying voice that speaks the cell coordinates.

I have futzed around with the voices so what I don’t know is which one of the voices is doing this.  It is the same one that says the status of a message in Outlook un-read, forwarded and replied.  And gives the erroneous indexes of the messages. (for some reason it always gives x of 44.)

2                     I don’t like hearing the contents and then the cell coordinates after.

I want to reverse the order. How can I do that?

3      How to make the entire first row  column headers and have it only report when I change columns? I don’t want to hear it when I stay in the same column.

Thanks

Shannon

I tried, and I also had to use Control-Shift-Escape.

Try, control+alt+t

Then, in the list of open processes, arrow down until you
find Outlook, then you can either tab to End Task or hit
Alt+e. You may be asked to confirm that you want to end the
task.

HTH,

Richard

It sounds like your Outlook process may be stuck and you
need to use task manager to end the process.

Hi, Laura. Try using ALT plus the Space Bar. Then Arrow up
to close, and press ENTER. This should allow you to get out
of Word, and back to where your keys work as usual.

Re: Excel bothers me How to customize it?

Richard Turner <richardturner42@...>

Richard
