Re: Excel bothers me How to customize it?
Richard Turner <richardturner42@...>
Laura, insert+c will announce the coordinates of the cell you are in. If you have lots of data in a cell, that would override it reading that info and tell you which cell you are in. I’m not sure doing that for each cell would bevery practicle. I hope there is a way for you to make that the default.

Yes, you have to do that for each Spreadsheet, unless someone with more experience knows how to make that universal.
I can’t find anything that would allow yu to change the order of the cell contents and coordinates.
I find it hard to believe that is true. Maybe someone will chime in with the place to find that setting.

I want to hear the coordenants before the contents not after. I want to hear A2, meadows plaza not Meadows plaza A2 I looked around and found the spot to turn off the coordinates but not how to reverse the order of what is spoken. Is this one of the advanced settings of the verbosity settings?

I can help you with the column headers, but I’m not sure why my coordinates speak after the data.
To set the column headers to read the way you want do the following: One, Go to a1 and tap the alt key to bring up the upper ribbon and arrow to the formulas tab. 2. down arrow to the lower ribbon and right arrow to the Define Names tab. 3. Hit enter. 4. Hit alt+n to create a new name. 5. Write the word “title” without the quotes and hit enter. 6. tab to the close button and hit spacebar. Now, when you arrow down a column, it will speak the contents of the cell, but if you right arrow or tab, you will hear the column title. As you down arrow, you will also hear the row title. I hope that helps, Richard

Hi all, I use spread sheets every single day. I have opened an excel sheet and when I am arrowing through it I am hearing things that are just…. Yucky! 1 there is this annoying voice that speaks the cell coordinates.
I have futzed around with the voices so what I don’t know is which one of the voices is doing this. It is the same one that says the status of a message in Outlook un-read, forwarded and replied. And gives the erroneous indexes of the messages. (for some reason it always gives x of 44.) 2 I don’t like hearing the contents and then the cell coordinates after. I want to reverse the order. How can I do that? 3 How to make the entire first row column headers and have it only report when I change columns? I don’t want to hear it when I stay in the same column. Thanks Shannon

Programming Language
Annabelle Susan Morison
Hi, it's
Annabelle.
How would I design
an app that can be fully recognized by screenreaders like JAWS? Is there a
specific programming language I may have to learn? I could be wrong, but isn't
there a specific set of language codes that should be implemented, like how JAWS
recognizes the browser of the Windows Operating Systems, for example, that which
is found within Windows Explorer? I'd like to try the C++ Programming Language,
recommended to me by my friend, Markus Johnson, but I'm not sure how to
configure codes for things like buttons, checkboxes, listboxes, comboboxes,
hotkeys, and radiobuttons. Do I just write these codes in a plain text editor
like Notepad? I'm confused on this one!

How can I do that? 3 How to make the entire first row column headers and have it only report when I change columns? I don’t want to hear it when I stay in the same column. Thanks Shannon

Folks,
This thread's getting a little bit away from the
original point, I think. While some topic drift is understandable, let's try and
steer it back on track, please.

I have a stand from which I am able to take pictures of entire
8-1/2 by 11 inch sheets of paper. I had a friend place a strip
along the place where the bottom edge of the paper should be and
along the edge of the stand where the side of the paper should
rest against. It has worked great for me. I was able to scan in
papers for my class assignments this way.

No, Insert+F3 brings up a list of all HTML elements, there are a total of 20 items in this list, you can use first letter navigation to go to a particular list like “l” will take you to the links list, press it again or down arrow and you get to the list items list, again or down arrow and you get to the lists list. “r” will go first to the radio buttons list and if you press it a second time it will go to the Regions list. Selecting the links list is the same as pressing Insert+F7, it’s just that if you don’t remember the shortcut keys like Insert+F5 for a list of forms fields, Insert+F6 for a list of headings and Insert+F7 for links, you can just remember this one shortcut, Insert+F3 and access all possible lists from there just as you can access all settings items with Insert+F2 instead of having to remember that Insert+6 is for the Settings Centre, Insert+7 is for the Window Classes, Insert+8 is for the keyboard manager etc.

Ted, Sieghard,
I saw these messages yesterday and I just re-read them. Now I am befuttled. R works for radio buttons in WE but I thought the nav key for a radio button in JAWS was A? But if you use the insert F3 it switcheds over to R? Hmmmm Thanks Shannon

Right, forgot about this feature since I rarely use it, I mostly just use the quick nav keys for radio buttons, checkboxes, form fields, buttons etc. but I may have to try and use this a bit more as sometimes when there are quite a few of the same element this might come in handy.

Radio buttons or other virtual elements have to be present in an app. Otherwise, you get the Find command, as stated. If you hear the phrase “virtual HTML features,” you’re on the right track. You can scroll down a list of 19 such features, including radio buttons.

Hi Ted,
Can you explain your Jaws+F3 and R command? Jaws Key+F3 is “find next” and I can’t see any connection to radio buttons. Usually a simple “r” is sufficient to move to a radio button.

Radio buttons are quickly accessible, when available, with JAWS-F3, followed by the letter R. They get quite a workout over here.

Hi Sieghard, I am now back at the unit with JAWS on it. Smile I would say on a scale of 1 to 10, I fall at maybe 1.5? Haha I am slowly trying to get used to the way JAWS does stuff. I have to admit that I still fall back on WE for a lot of things because it is just faster to get things done. I try to use JAWS to do things I know how to do. I find myself having to turn WE back on to get things finished.
I do know the C for combo box, H heading, A for radio button (but I am used to that function being R) I don’t understand the Regions? That is now what R is for. The Touch Curser seems to be pretty cool but, I don’t understand it either. It doesn’t seem to find the things I know are there either. I don’t seem to have any luck using the JAWS find command at all. It never finds things I know are on the screen. I don’t have much luck using the JAWS curser i.e. mouse to find things I know are there. There are tons of things about JAWS that I don’t know. I am slowly plugging away at the manual when I find a problem and think “there is a something for this” Like just now… I had some spelling errors in my message. WE has a handy little thing where you can jump to the next and prior spelling errors. Alt and semicolon for prior and alt apostrophe for next. I find it very handy I wonder If JAWS has a feature like this?

Hi Shannon,
I don’t want to assume the level of Jaws knowledge you have for navigating websites, but on a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is super expert, where would you rate your knowledge of the tools and features Jaws offers? By those I mean things like using quick nav keys like c, b,t, l, r and so on as well as features like Jaws Find, setting bookmarks, making sure you correctly activate mouseOver links etc. I am a Scotia Bank customer in Canada and also use the CIBC website as I have a Visa from them and while of course this issue Kevin describes may very well be impossible for Jaws to deal with, I have certainly helped people with problems which ended up being quite workable form somebody who really knows to get the most out of Jaws I am also curious whether now that Kevin got an explanation of the problem if he can now get Jaws to do what is necessary without sighted help. I have numerous times needed sighted help to explain to me what was going on before I could deal with it using Jaws by myself.

Hi Kevin, I've been watching the saga. I'm glad you figured out the problem, but how did you solve it? I have issues finding controlthings on my banking site as well. Just wondering what the tricks and tips are. Thanks Shannon
Hello All, Problem solved; when I pressed the “Pay Bills” button a little box came up asking if it was to come from checking or savings, which JAWS did not recognize. Cheers Kevin

Hello,
I’ve successfully used Adblock for a while, but unfortunately, because I
don’t often actually have to actively do anything, and now want to change some
settings, I have plum forgotten how to get to it using JAWS. Please respond with
ideas. thanks!
