Jaws seems to love to say “clickable” on every bloody item that could possibly be clicked on.  Is there a way to change that?

I was on a page of search results and could hardly figure out what the heck it was saying beyond clickable.

Sorry If this is duplicating to some of you that are on multiple lists.

I really need to know how to fix this.

Windows 10 is blocking a feature of WE that I really need.

I know this is a Jaws list but… I am trying to learn JAWS and until I have sufficient skills I have to rely on WE.

The OCR feature of JAWS has a similar counterpart in WE called Virtual View. When I try to use this it is blocked and says that it is for my protection.

How can I get it unblocked?

I have posted this to many lists, the WE list, the Win 10 list and now here in the hopes that some one knows how this is done.

Much thanks all around.

I didn’t see any reply to my question.

I use the Virtual View feature of WE frequently. Until I get JAWS configured right and my knowledge gets better I need to use WE.

Can anyone tell me how to  tell WIN 10 to allow the app?

I use it to get the raw start and stop times on the time card view in the time tracking program at work. I know that JAWS could OCR it for me but with Jaws I can’t get this information to show on the screen.

Thank you.

Good morning,

I am running Win 10 now. I am still using WE for now. I have all 4 options on this system WE, JAWS, NVDA and NARATOR.

WE has a similar feature as JAWS convenient OCR.

When I try to use it I am getting a pop up telling me that This app has been blocked for my protection. For more information contact my administrator.

Well, I have ad min rights. There is no option on this pop up to allow the app anyway.

This OS seems to be just as flakey as the win 8.1 that I was using.

How can I allow APPS that Windows thinks I shouldn’t?

What else has it blocked that I don’t know about yet?

Thanks for the help.

Hi, These are tricky. What I have had to do is copy the image to another program such as paint and run jaws OCR on it there. This can be problematic. You are best to put paint to full window mode and get rid of rulers etc. I don't remember all the details but that is the jist. The results very widely from garbage to a reasonable result.

Hi Shannon,

I don’t want to assume the level of Jaws knowledge you have for navigating websites, but on a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is super expert, where would you rate your knowledge of the tools and features Jaws offers? By those I mean things like using quick nav keys like c, b,t, l, r and so on as well as features like Jaws Find, setting bookmarks, making sure you correctly activate mouseOver links etc.

I am a Scotia Bank customer in Canada and also use the CIBC website as I have a Visa from them and while of course this issue Kevin describes may very well be impossible for Jaws to deal with, I have certainly helped people with problems which ended up being quite workable form somebody who really knows to get the most out of Jaws

I am also curious whether now that Kevin got an explanation of the problem if he can now get Jaws to do what is necessary without sighted help.

I have numerous times needed sighted help to explain to me what was going on before I could deal with it using Jaws by myself.

Regards,

Sieghard

The program is funny that way.  Sometimes I’ve installed or merged a dictionary in a new edition of JAWS, only to find it won’t work until I open it—not alter it, just open it.  I think I may have had to save it, but I really can’t recall.  At least you have it working.

It was a box that showed that Windows was checked. When I found the context area there was the word general. I really didn’t make any changes, but after I went to ok, it was reading correctly. This is about all I can remember about this area. I have only been using JAWS since May 17 and I still have a lot to learn.

Try changing the punctuation to most. I had the same problem with another screen reader.  Also, try Mike’s suggestions as well.  Like him, I can’t duplicate the problem you are having and yes, there are websites that offer the Daily Text.  On that website though, you can listen to the bible in MP3 format by downloading a particular verse or book of the bible. Take heart, like I said, I have heard that type of problem with another screen reader.  It would read the same thing you are hearing.  Since I didn’t know how to fix it, I just put up with it.  I have not had that problem since switching to JAWS.  I just have to go into the dictionary to make sure it pronounces Gen.  as Genisis not general or Ps. As Psalms.  Come to think of it, try going into the JAWS dictionary and fixing it that way if you can.

Kevin, So you just set it to default to checking? I guess that is a choice set up by the bank?

All good until you need to find the savings account. Is it not a combo box? Can’t Jaws find it with the C for that control?

Then Maybe again it is a Mouse over type that I have little to no experience with and don’t really understand myself.

It would be cool to know how some of the web controls work.

Hello Shannon,

I wrote to the help line on the site, first I received an instruction to insure I pressed the confirmation button. Then I replied that it was not coming up and that I was using a screen reader. I was told that the issue was probably particular to my software, and was left to my own devices, so I wrote to the technical help address on the site,  and during our email exchange I offered to come into the branch laptop in  tow. Actually all I really needed was sighted assistance to report the account selection box that JAWS did not.

The best advice I could give after this is to use the insert control and L for list, T for table, B for button etc., And sadly, sighted assistance when you are stuck.

Cheers Kevin.

Thanks for all the help.
I now have the scripts working and the total time and elapsed time hotkeys are going to be very useful.
Not to mention a few of the ones in the list John sent. Many of those are just standard GoldWave keystrokes, but this will make transitioning to Jaws a bit easier since I use GoldWave quite a lot.

Thanks again,

features/shortcuts stay and which get retired (removed). I don't know if
the scripts work completely with the latest version of Goldwave and/or

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi Kevin, I've been watching the saga. I'm glad you figured out the problem, but how did you solve it?

I have issues finding controlthings on my banking site as well. Just wondering what the tricks and tips are. Thanks Shannon

What does this script do for GoldWave 6.28, which is the current
GoldWave version?
I am wanting to be able to check file length, and the position of the
start and end markers and hopefully cue point locations with a keystroke
rather than having to open the file edit window at each point, etc.

Are there hotkeys for Jaws to read various elements in GoldWave such as,

If there are free scripts, where does one find them?

Thanks,

Hi All,

This is my first post to this group.

I’m looking for a good backup solution that will work with jaws???  I have tried several of the mainstream programs but they didn’t work well with jaws if at all.

Thx -Steve

He’s absolutely right.  In fact, that was how the original OCR package was structured.  The PDF conversion did not occur until 16, but it’s become so popular we tend to forget what came before.

Hi Sieghard,

When I was trying to do this the other day, everybody kept trying to tell me that I could only use the OCR function after I opened a scanned image in Adobe.  Now that you have given me the complete set of availability and keystorkes, I might go back and see if I can now read my picture text that I received.  Thank you for this.

Hi Carol,

What you say about Convenient OCR not being able to convert images on the screen is not entirely correct.

It is correct hat the command Jaws Key+Spacebar followed by O and D requires focus to be in Adobe Reader with a PDF open.

However, if you open any image in any program such as Windows Photo Viewer and said image has focus on the screen, you can use the command to perform OCR on either the entire screen or the Window, instead of "D" for "document" you would use "S" for Screen or "W" for "Window. Of course first you press the layered keystroke to bring up Convenient OCR, then follow it by "S" or "W", there is also the option for "C" which recognizes any controls you may have focused on like a graphical button.

Sieghard

Hi Richard,

Tom is correct in what he said.  If you were a Window-Eyes subscriber, you also need to know that the Jaws Convenient OCR program is for reading PDF files that are not shown in Adobe products, in other words, the image files that are scanned in and created as documents.  For example, this program can not convert images that are on the screen.  If this was not what you are looking for, simply ignore my message, grin.  Have a nice weekend.

Give it a little time, and Convenient OCR should create an accessible text file for you if the document you are working with can be successfully converted.

How to stop Jaws from saying List Box

Richard Turner

In a specific program, is it possible to stop Jaws from saying List Box since I already know each item I tab to is a list box?

It is just extra verbiage.

Hello,
Wouldn't it be cool if we actually knew these people as they
originally wer/are? However, some/most might've died out but left heir
recordings to use for voices with JAWS/decktalk and other things. BY the
way, I believe Caren's already married to Lee-another Australian, you
know? This is just my opinion.

Well, "sexy" is in the ear of the beholder, that's for sure.

I've found some of the "foreign" (for the United States) accented voices
on Garmin, particularly one of the British female and Australian male,
voices to be rather mellifluous and somewhat sexy. Everyone's mileage
will, of course, vary,

I don't find, for instance, the SAPI voice "Microsoft David" that I use
with NVDA "sexy" but I do find it, in many instances, particularly when
it's reading through something at beyond the letter or word levels to be
remarkably lifelike in most instances.

Not knowing the synthesizers that various people are using it's
impossible to suggest generic ways to search for a "sexy" voice for
them, but I'd be willing to bet that someone has created them, even if
they're not commercially available, but it's a matter of finding them.
Inflection, breathiness (or lack thereof), and vowel duration are a lot
of what get's tagged as "sexy" when you think about voices in real
people that are described as sexy. These are parameters that it's
possible to control in a speech synthesizer.

It would be an absolute riot to create a "femme fatale" or the male
counterpart thereof synthesized voices for use with anything, screen
reader or not. I don't think that anyone would use the most "over the
top" versions for any period of time, but they could make for great
entertainment value over a short term.
