Thank you for your response.  I didn't like the way the latest version behaved with Window-Eyes, so I removed it and went back to version 31.  When I get the opportunity, I will updateThunderbird again and see if it is any better with Jaws.  Right now though, I am still switching back and forth from one screen reader to the other.

Hello Group Members,

I am running Win7 PC with Jaws 18 and have a problem wherein when

reading messages in Thunderbird, I press enter on a message and

everything is fine for a number of messages.  Then, all of a sudden,

Jaws will read the subject line and add something about where my email

files are stored and then, there is no more speech.  Sometimes, well, at

least twice, it worked for me to invoke the touch cursor and then the PC

cursor and Jaws would read the email.

I can tab out of the email and Jaws will read everything else, but going

back to the email message, there is no speech.  It is not related to one

message, as I can go back to a message that was already read and it will

have the same issue.

The only way I have found to solve the issue is to unload Jaws and start

it up again.

Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Sometimes, I will

reload and only get through a couple of messages before this happens

again.  At other times, I can do all of my email, often with over 100

messages with no trouble at all.

Thank you.

Re: Word 2010 help, please. How can I reduce the text area for a document?

Keith,

I'm sorry I cannot step-by-step you through this, as I've not done it with a screen reader and don't have the time today to try.

The above being said, using Text Boxes in your document sized to your cut size is your best bet.  If you're willing to go slightly shorter than your 6 inch height you could fit four text boxes on a single sheet of 8.5 x 11" paper.

Word 2010 help, please. How can I reduce the text area for a document?

Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.

Hi,

I’m preparing a several paragraph document within Word 2010 using Windows 7.

This document will be included in a graduation card.

I want to insert the text into a document that will eventually be cut down with scissors by a sighted person to fit within the card, having first been printed in the smaller size on a regular sized 8 ½ by 11 sheet of paper.

How can I reduce the text field to a 4 inch by 6 inch area? I’m not familiar with doing this within Word, so would very much appreciate a step by step guide.

Thanks in advance, Keith

Hi Laura,

Well, I went searching for the option you want. It's like looking for a
needle in a haystack! But here it is. When Word is running, Alt-F followed
by T for Settings. There is a list of categories. Arrow down to advanced
and start tabbing. You will have to tab several times, but you should find
an option that asks if you wish backup copies of your files to be created.
I'm guessing that option is checked on your system. Press Space Barr to
uncheck, and tab to OK and press enter. That should do it. Good luck.

Hello,

A few days ago I received a new laptop with Windows 10, MS Word 2016 and
Jaws 18. The tech person copied all my folders and files from my old laptop
to the new one; the old laptop has Windows 7, MS Word 2010 and Jaws 15. I'm
having major issues with all of my files on the new laptop with Word 2016.

Example:

I opened a file called corn casserole;

it says "corn casserole (compatibility mode) - word print view edit"

I made changes and closed the document (It asked me if I want to save
changes and I said yes)

Now, in the documents list there is a file called corn casserole with the
changes I made and there is a file called backup of corn casserole that does
not have those changes I made.

If I open that backup corn casserole file and make a change and then close
it I now have a file that says backup of backup corn casserole.

This happens every time with any and all files that I open and make changes
to. I have hundreds of files and there are many I open and make changes to
quite often.

Is there a setting or a way to fix this problem so I don't end up with
hundreds of backup and backup of backup files? Thank you for any help or
suggestions.

Re: Speeding up the JAWS starting time?

You might want to reinstall Windows 10 then, I have both a 5-year old Acer laptop with an iI5 processor from backthen and a new Asus Zenbook with an I7 Skylake processor, both have Windows 10 Creator’s Update and Jaws 18 and while the old Acer takes maybe a bit longer, both boot very fast. If my Asus is shut down and I press the button to turn it on it takes about 10 seconds for it to boot to the password/PIN prompt, then after I enter my PIN the desktop visually is there in about 2 or 3 seconds, Jaws takes maybe another 6 or 8 seconds to speak.

There are times when Windows is busy cleaning up some mess or finishing updates that take longer than expected.

My old machine was taking 4 minutes to jaws speech.  It was not a slow machine but had been running for two years without much in the way of cleanup.  I installed a SSD and the boot time dropped to24 seconds without making any other changes.

My new Xeon Win 10machine with a faster SSD and more RAM takes twice as long to boot.  So much for progress.

Re: On Line Bankingg Update

Hi Shannon,

I don’t want to assume the level of Jaws knowledge you have for navigating websites, but on a scale from 1 to 10 where 10 is super expert, where would you rate your knowledge of the tools and features Jaws offers? By those I mean things like using quick nav keys like c, b,t, l, r and so on as well as features like Jaws Find, setting bookmarks, making sure you correctly activate mouseOver links etc.

I am a Scotia Bank customer in Canada and also use the CIBC website as I have a Visa from them and while of course this issue Kevin describes may very well be impossible for Jaws to deal with, I have certainly helped people with problems which ended up being quite workable form somebody who really knows to get the most out of Jaws

I am also curious whether now that Kevin got an explanation of the problem if he can now get Jaws to do what is necessary without sighted help.

I have numerous times needed sighted help to explain to me what was going on before I could deal with it using Jaws by myself.
