May I interject?  If I understand correctly, what you’re describing is default behavior.  There are minor tweaks you can make (for instance the function of the two insert keys), and the type of keyboard you’re using—desktop, laptop, Kenesis (See the startup menu under Help).

 

There’s a lot you can do, but there’s no need to swallow the whole load in one sitting.  Read the included documentation, and play around with the various features.  There’s no reason this can’t be fun.

Yes, this is exactly what I wanted to know. I use the T arrow keys all the time just to check out the text I am on or up and down but often need access to that mouse too. So separating these is very cool otherwise I have to constantly keep checking and or changing the perspective of the information.

I haven’t made the change yet.

All these cursers and voices are cool but sort of confusing. At the moment I have played with the pc voice and it is different from all the other choices. In fact they are all different from each other. I thought it might be  easier to tell “Who” is giving feedback.

I am sort of confused by why this voice is being used and that one is not?

Example in Outlook. I am arrowing up and down through the list of messages. I used Nathan as the PC voice but when I get to a message I have not read yet the Keyboard voice Alison is reporting the status of Unread?  And she is also telling me the index of the item at the very last of each message even if the message has been read?

I don’t understand that.

So if Kevin is right and the T arrow keys are going to review at the PC level they are going to talk with the JAWS voice who I have set to Samantha?

 

So this is still going to get confusing?

Yes you can separate the extended keys from the numpad keys using jaws.

You first need to open the jaws settings sinter by pressing the jaws key plus the number 6 at the same time and then

if you want to make this the default, press control shift and the letter d at the same time.

Then go down until you hear jaws say, keyboard closed, then right arrow to open it, then go down until

you hear jaws say separate extended keys from numpad and press space bar to check it.

there may be quite a few settings in the settings sinter you may want to change, if you don’t understand what something means just press the tab key and jaws will explain it to you.

When you are dun just press alt f4 to get out of it and then press the space bar to save your settings.

I hope this helps, if someone knows another way please let me know. I hope this is what you wanted to know.

Hi again.

 

This is strange.  In the in box of Outlook 2016, when I activate the JAWS cursor and use the extended arrow keys to navigate, the JAWS cursor voice is heard.  If I open a message and read it with the extended arrow keys, all is well.

 

Now for the really weird part.  If I reply to a message and have the AWS cursor active, I can’t read the message I’m typing.  If I switch to the PC cursor all works well.  I’m using Outlook 2016.  Go figure.

Thanks for the info on how to set the extended keys to operate independent of the numpad.  My only complaint is that if I choose the JAWS cursor, when I use the extended arrow keys, the voice for the JAWS cursor is used.  Oh well, at least the feature works.

Under Settings center, fifth item down.  Each verbosity level can be customized.  Once you choose the one you want, tab over and start cursoring down, if you want to tweak.

Nothing wrong with asking for help from the sighted community from time to time.  When applying to get a guide dog, you need character references.  One of mine said the one sense that she would be terrified of losing is her sight. She could live with being deaf but, loosing her sight would be terrifying. What’s my point? Some sighted are more then willing to help.  You just must be careful it is not for the wrong reasons, and that, is a Pandora’s box which this is not the forum for.

I wrote to the help line on the site, first I received an instruction to insure I pressed the confirmation button. Then I replied that it was not coming up and that I was using a screen reader. I was told that the issue was probably particular to my software, and was left to my own devices, so I wrote to the technical help address on the site,  and during our email exchange I offered to come into the branch laptop in  tow. Actually all I really needed was sighted assistance to report the account selection box that JAWS did not.

The best advice I could give after this is to use the insert control and L for list, T for table, B for button etc., And sadly, sighted assistance when you are stuck.

I have noticed JAWS can be slowed down by other programs starting at start-up. If you have another screen reader starting too, that could be a problem. Some antivirus programs slow it as well, and some printer software .can too.

So if that is not reported by JAWS how do you know that it is there without another pair of eyes? Are you still left on your own to wait? Or did this lesson teach you how to find the account choice area so that doesn’t happen and be able to complete the transaction?

I got a slight scare earlier this morning.  I restarted the computer and there was no JAWS starting up.  NVDA started up on the login screen but then went silent.  JAWS finally came on.  My question is, is there anyway to get it to come on quicker?  Honestly, I could have drank a cup of coffee waiting for JAWS to start speaking.

Ok... it's been a while since I used Windows 7. So tell me how you get that it is using the FS driver as the quote default display driver?

I can't remember the Windows 7 device manager well enough to be sure but on Windows 10 doesn't have a 1uote default driver that I can find. It simply lists the FS driver and the driver for the video hardware currently in use.

I did look in Device Manager! And yes, both drivers are listed. And by the way, when I downloaded and installed the updates from Microsoft, included among them was a specific driver for the particular model of the toshiba laptop but, despite downloading and installing the updated driver, Windows has chosen to keep the Freedom Scientific Mirror Driver as the default graphics driver.

Yes, the monitor does work!

there?

Well, the subject says it all. I have recently acquired a Toshiba Laptop,
which is about 4 years old.

I used a talking install of Windows 7 Professional to install said operating
system.

I Then installed JAWS 14.

I have downloaded and installed all the updates for said operating system.

In addition, I installed Java and Flash Player.

Our next door neighbour came in the other day and told me that the
computer's monitor was black.

I downloaded a driver update utility, which indicated that the Freedom
scientific Mirror Driver was being used by Windows 7 as the default video
driver.

Unfortunately, unlike audio devices which might be connected, either
internally or externally to a computer, where you can choose which audio
device is the default sound card, it appears, that the same capability is
not available for choosing which display/video driver should be the default
device.

So far, I have tried two driver download utilities, neither is very
accessible or easy to use with JAWS. One of which, using the JAWS cursor, I
can find and click the "Update Drivers" button but, I cannot insert the
License key to register the program.

The other, I could register the program but, after clicking the button to
start the driver download process, there is a confirmation box which opens
with "yes" and "no" buttons. I tried clicking the "Yes" button with the JAWS
left mouse button, only to be met with the Windows Ding sound. I pressed the
ENTER key, hoping that would acknowledge the confirmation to start the
download, only to be returned to the Desktop.

So, I come to the fund of knowledge, where, hopefully, there are members on
this list, who can suggest/recommend such a utility which, if not 100 %

I am hoping that such a utility can detect the correct display/video driver,
download, install it and change the setting in Windows to make sure that the
new display/video driver is the default driver, with the result that
readable text will be displayed on the screen instead of the screen being
black.

Hello Shannon,

I wrote to the help line on the site, first I received an instruction to insure I pressed the confirmation button. Then I replied that it was not coming up and that I was using a screen reader. I was told that the issue was probably particular to my software, and was left to my own devices, so I wrote to the technical help address on the site,  and during our email exchange I offered to come into the branch laptop in  tow. Actually all I really needed was sighted assistance to report the account selection box that JAWS did not.

The best advice I could give after this is to use the insert control and L for list, T for table, B for button etc., And sadly, sighted assistance when you are stuck.

Thanks Melissa.  Because my sister gave me the computer on loan, and it had to be reserected twice from the blue screen, my first thought was it’s died. Not a good thing when you have a remote scheduled in 9 hours and it all happens in the wee hours of the morning, think I have to cut back on the coffee.  LOL.

I don’t think that there is a way to speed up start time for Jaws.  I’ve had this happen to me also.  There were times when I didn’t think that Jaws was going to start.

I got a slight scare earlier this morning.  I restarted the computer and there was no JAWS starting up.  NVDA started up on the login screen but then went silent.  JAWS finally came on.  My question is, is there anyway to get it to come on quicker?  Honestly, I could have drank a cup of coffee waiting for JAWS to start speaking.

I would like to know if I can separate the arrow keys from the number pad? I want the PC curser and the virtual pc curser to use the inverted T arrow keys and have the various JAWS curser, Invisible curser, and the Touch curser to use the number pad keys.

Can I do that and if so how do I do it?
