Are there any advantages to updating to the latest jaws 18 for users on Windows 7

I'm still using Windows 7 and intend to do so for some time, just a brief look at new features in the latest jaws 18 update I can't see anything that would improve things for those of us still using Windows 7. If there is anything I missed and there is an advantage please let me know.

I just had this problem the other day.

I believe I pressed Control P for preferences at the main Winamp window, and then was able to tab over to file associations from there.

Once at file associations, just check the option for all files, and your Winamp should be restored.

I'm not sure why, but I had to do this myself the other day when Winamp suddenly stopped working.

As I'm not a high Email user and I don't much like the Mail App I thought I'd give it a shot since there seem to be issues with Thunderbird.

I have been using this for years & it works great,
all it does is creat the same audio registry keys you have in normal mode in
the safe mode registry tree.
So then audio is told to start up in safe mode.
I have used this on all the windows versions since xp both 32 & 64 bit & it
works great.

depending on how you want to run the keys I have written 2 different
instructions below


1. the attached file is a text file and it is the keys you need to put into
the safe mode registry tree.
I am sending it as a text file so the email servers hopefully let it through
as an attachment.
If I send it as an attached registry file it will never be aloud through.

you need to change this text file to a registry file by changing the
extention of the
file.
this is the last 3 letters of the file after the full stop, .txt
you need to change the .txt to be .reg
So save the attached file to your computer somewhere, may be the desktop,
now go to the place where you have saved the attached file & rename it by
changing the extention from .txt to .reg
so the file name after you have changed it will be
Activate Sound in SafeMode.reg

now just hit enter on the file Activate Sound in SafeMode.reg
and you will get a window asking if you want to make changes to the
registry, you need to press yes
now another window will come up you need to press ok.
now you can reboot & go into safe mode & you will have sound.
jaws will not work due to the video driver not loading but you can use NVDA
as the screen reader
So download NVDA and set it up before you boot into safe mode.


2. if the attached file doesnt get to you because the admin of this list
doesnt allow attachments, then do the following

I have pasted the text of the registry file below,
you just need to coppy & paist the below into a notepad document & then save
it as a .reg file.

once you have pasted the below into notepad,
press control s for save,
then tab once to save as type & change this to all files,
now shift tab back into the file name edit box and name the file what ever
you want & make sure the last 3 letters of the file name are .reg
for example you can name it something like
sound in safe mode.reg

so coppy everything below between the lines of stars,
do not coppy the lines of stars

Unless something has drasticly changed between windows 7 and 10, no
screenreader will work in safe mode. This is because without extensive
modification, Windows does not load audio drivers in safe mode. So while the
screenreader may load, you very likely won't get anything out of it.

By default it auto detects the screen reader.
It will let the screen reader speak but some commands such as the say command it sends it to the screen reader to speak.
If you set it to self voicing you will get all prompts spoken in sapi speech.

Window Eyes. Quicken is offering a 60-day money back guarantee on
trying Quicken 2017 and they say they've revamped the interface, which
could go either way on accessibility. I lost a year's worth of Quicken
files due to a computer crash last summer, so I'm going to start fresh
and maybe given Quicken 2017 a try. I tried the Cash Manager software
someone else mentioned and didn't have the patience to figure it out; it

I'm using it for downloading of transactions into various accounts. You
can tab through the check registries, but often, double entries are read.
Accessibility needs lots of work. As mentioned, Intuit sold the Quicken
product to Quicken itself. The web site is quicken.com. They provide
support, but it depends on who you get when you call. I use it now
because I want to categorize transactions for tax purposes for our
accountant. If there was another viable option, I'd take it. I will
probably add investment accounts to my accounts list, something I don't
think other programs support. Cash Management had some potential, but
they didn't support the Quicken format, and there was poor follow-up
from their contact when I approached them about this issue. Every
package I know of supports the Quicken format, so that was
disappointing. Hope this helps.

Yes, this can be done.  My instructions may not be the best, but I think you can figure it out since you have already been in the Jaws options and found
the voice settings.  From within the voices setting, choose voice adjustment.
Press alt-v to get to the combo box where you choose which cursor you want to modify.
you will get to an option where you can down arrow through options for default cursor, PC cursor, Jaws cursor, etc.
You can not have the option set to default.  After choosing the cursor you want to set, tab until you find the pitch setting. This is the next tab after
the punctuation setting.
You change it with the arrow keys.
Once you have it set, tab to save as and give it a name, something you will recognize, like Glen pitch 44  and press enter on OK.
You will be asked if you want to set this for the default.  Enter on yes or OK, I forgot what it is called at this point.
Now, you will have access to that voice whenever you want to use it.

What Happened To AVG?

Hi, it's Annabelle.
I have AVG Antivirus Free Edition, and a recent update has rendered it inaccessible to JAWS. Specifically it did something where it won't let me access the menu from the System Tray like it used to. Also, I used to be able to fully access the main interface, but I think they messed with something where it's now made with Google Chrome. How do I get rid of AVG Zen? I have Antivirus Free, and it keeps telling me to renew my subscription. What's up with that? I don't have a paid subscription, and I don't think you would need one with AVG Antivirus Free.

I have used this on all the windows versions since xp both 32 & 64 bit & it works great.

depending on how you want to run the keys I have written 2 different instructions below


1. the attached file is a text file and it is the keys you need to put into the safe mode registry tree.
I am sending it as a text file so the email servers hopefully let it through as an attachment.
If I send it as an attached registry file it will never be aloud through.

you need to change this text file to a registry file by changing the extention of the
file.
this is the last 3 letters of the file after the full stop, .txt
you need to change the .txt to be .reg
So save the attached file to your computer somewhere, may be the desktop,
now go to the place where you have saved the attached file & rename it by
changing the extention from .txt to .reg
so the file name after you have changed it will be
Activate Sound in SafeMode.reg

now just hit enter on the file Activate Sound in SafeMode.reg
and you will get a window asking if you want to make changes to the
registry, you need to press yes
now another window will come up you need to press ok.
now you can reboot & go into safe mode & you will have sound.
jaws will not work due to the video driver not loading but you can use NVDA as the screen reader
So download NVDA and set it up before you boot into safe mode.


2. if the attached file doesnt get to you because the admin of this list
doesnt allow attachments, then do the following

I have pasted the text of the registry file below,
you just need to coppy & paist the below into a notepad document & then save
it as a .reg file.

once you have pasted the below into notepad,
press control s for save,
then tab once to save as type & change this to all files,
now shift tab back into the file name edit box and name the file what ever
you want & make sure the last 3 letters of the file name are .reg
for example you can name it something like
sound in safe mode.reg

so coppy everything below between the lines of stars,
do not coppy the lines of stars

Unless something has drasticly changed between windows 7 and 10, no screenreader will work in safe mode. This is because without extensive modification, Windows does not load audio drivers in safe mode. So while the screenreader may load, you very likely won't get anything out of it.

Yes, I did, with mixed rsults.

 

The files aren't the easiest to read, probably because of a multi-column format with many graphics intersperced throughout.

 

I also tried copying and pasting the material from Convenient OCR into a new Word document, but that too was only partially effective.  There were still lots of spaces between sections of the document, and I'm not sure all of the text was included or completely accessible.

 

Anyway, I think I'm going to have to settle for the best that Convenient OCR can do at this point, and call it good.

Hello, everyone.

 

I am having a problem reading a few PDF articles I have just been sent.

 

Once I open the attachments, via Adobe Acrobat DC, I find that I cannot advance beyond the first page of each article, either via the arrow keys, or the page up and page down keys.

 

Interestingly, when I use my arrow keys and the page up or down keys, the visual sscreen advances with no problem.  In other words, Jaws appears to be  stuck on the first page and is unable to advance through the rest of the file.

 

I’m using Windows 7 and the latest build of Jaws 18 here, along with Adobe Acrobat DC.

 

Any suggestions would be apreciated.

Is it possible to change the pitch of Eloquence?

I really don’t like the default pitch for the Jaws eloquence. Is it possible to change this? I know with Window-eyes I could, but for some reason I haven’t found how to do it in Jaws. I found something that says the pitch for uppercase where you can input a percent. I haven’t found anything else.

 

Along the same lines are there hot keys to rotor through the screen, keyboard, mouse, virtual cursor settings. In Window-Eyes it was control-Alt-arrows etc. Still trying to get used to things. I just activated my copy today.
