Re: repairing Jaws
Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)
It once had an actual repair option. I haven't had to run it for a while, before the new method involving the command line came into vogue. But in the day it worked.

Re: Quicken
Ted Drake
Hi All
I manage accessibility at Intuit, so I can help with clarifying the current situation. Quicken was Intuit's original product and helps people manage their budgets, investments, and balancing their accounts. QuickBooks is the product for small businesses. It manages accounting, sales, invoices, employees, payroll, and taxes. Intuit spun off Quicken last year; it now runs as its own company. Intuit's management felt like Quicken was no longer fitting into our core strategy and it would have a stronger future as a standalone product. Quicken has kept the majority of its engineers and most importantly their lead accessibility manager. Quicken made a change several years ago to modernize the operating system and accidentally made accessibility worse. We gathered a group of blind customers to beta test fixes and began a concentrated effort to restore keyboard and improve label accessibility. The Intuit/Quicken separation process took a while, but their team is back to working on accessibility and product quality. I still keep in touch with their team and have great confidence in their commitment to accessibility. Quicken should work a bit better with JAWS than Window-Eyes. We discovered an old script was bundled with the JAWS product. We made some improvements a couple years ago to provide some additional labels for controls. This script is free and you shouldn't need to download anything. You can find more information about Quicken at https://www.quicken.com/ For basic budgeting and categorization, you could also try Mint. This is the free product from Intuit. It's a web and mobile product that does much of what Quicken covers. Mint doesn't provide Quicken's deeper reports and insights. It does have a method to pay bills. Mint's mobile apps provide a more accessible experience than the web site, but we are continually making improvements to all platforms. You can find more information at http://mint.intuit.com QuickBooks isn't the product for you. I always welcome feedback on the accessibility of our products. Our product teams value customer insights. Thank you Les for your your response. Ted Drake, Intuit Accessibility ted_drake@...

Hello, everyone.
I am having a problem reading a few PDF articles I have just been sent.
Once I open the attachments, via Adobe Acrobat DC, I find that I cannot advance beyond the first page of each article, either via the arrow keys, or the page up and page down keys.
Interestingly, when I use my arrow keys and the page up or down keys, the visual sscreen advances with no problem. In other words, Jaws appears to be stuck on the first page and is unable to advance through the rest of the file.
I’m using Windows 7 and the latest build of Jaws 18 here, along with Adobe Acrobat DC.
Any suggestions would be apreciated.

I've found some of the "foreign" (for the United States) accented voices on Garmin, particularly one of the British female and Australian male, voices to be rather mellifluous and somewhat sexy. Everyone's mileage will, of course, vary, I don't find, for instance, the SAPI voice "Microsoft David" that I use with NVDA "sexy" but I do find it, in many instances, particularly when it's reading through something at beyond the letter or word levels to be remarkably lifelike in most instances. Not knowing the synthesizers that various people are using it's impossible to suggest generic ways to search for a "sexy" voice for them, but I'd be willing to bet that someone has created them, even if they're not commercially available, but it's a matter of finding them. Inflection, breathiness (or lack thereof), and vowel duration are a lot of what get's tagged as "sexy" when you think about voices in real people that are described as sexy. These are parameters that it's possible to control in a speech synthesizer. It would be an absolute riot to create a "femme fatale" or the male counterpart thereof synthesized voices for use with anything, screen reader or not. I don't think that anyone would use the most "over the top" versions for any period of time, but they could make for great entertainment value over a short term. -- Brian Version 1703, Build 15063.296, Home 64-bit Many are under the gross misapprehension that the Constitution is a cage and a laundry-list rather than a framework upon which great things have been and still will be built.
