Hi David,

I think this email was great. All dogs need a good place to unwind.
And, those Jaws users have a great opportunity for learning new things.

Although I am getting used to playing around with voices and their
settings, I have not been able to change the pitch for any of them. Is
this possible? For example, the Reid voice would be reasonable except
it is a bit too bassy. On the other hand, Glenn sounds better, but this
voice is too high to suite me. Is there a way I can change the
settings? Also, does pitch work for other synthes? Thanks.

That may have been a ridiculous question then, but not so much now.

There are some very "sexy" sounding voices available for speech synthesis that sound virtually human.  This is particularly so on GPS devices, and some of these voices are a hoot (unless someone is easily offended by directions being given in very suggestive, as opposed to demanding, tones).

Well, "sexy" is in the ear of the beholder, that's for sure.

I've found some of the "foreign" (for the United States) accented voices on Garmin, particularly one of the British female and Australian male, voices to be rather mellifluous and somewhat sexy.  Everyone's mileage will, of course, vary,

I don't find, for instance, the SAPI voice "Microsoft David" that I use with NVDA "sexy" but I do find it, in many instances, particularly when it's reading through something at beyond the letter or word levels to be remarkably lifelike in most instances.

Not knowing the synthesizers that various people are using it's impossible to suggest generic ways to search for a "sexy" voice for them, but I'd be willing to bet that someone has created them, even if they're not commercially available, but it's a matter of finding them.  Inflection, breathiness (or lack thereof), and vowel duration are a lot of what get's tagged as "sexy" when you think about voices in real people that are described as sexy.  These are parameters that it's possible to control in a speech synthesizer.

It would be an absolute riot to create a "femme fatale" or the male counterpart thereof synthesized voices for use with anything, screen reader or not.  I don't think that anyone would use the most "over the top" versions for any period of time, but they could make for great entertainment value over a short term.

we marked up a data table and listened to it in JAWS, it told us how many rows and columns then read through the table.  According to our SOP we have to associate the cells to the headers so we just spent 2 tedious days going through each data cell and making the association in the table header editor tool.

When we listened to it in JAWS, there was no difference.  We looked at each other like "what was the point of that"  we still have a compliant document either way?

Say Line on DHL which is a folder not a file:
DHL
‎5/‎2/‎2017 ‏‎7:53 PM File folder
1 of 17

Now I use Jaws Key+Tab, the keyboard help describes it as follows: "Says the current Window + the associated prompt label":
DHL

1 of 17
Date created: ‎11/‎16/‎2016 ‏‎8:50 PM
Size: 1.78 MB

Would that not be because they are organized in a grid, so that Jaws is giving you the total of that particular section?

Hi, Sieghard. I also get this indexing information, but if there are over say, one hundred files, it might give me the file information, and then say:
5 of 22, even though there might be 160 files in the folder.

I am not sure why this isn't working for you, a Say Line for me includes the "1 of 4" or whatever you have. Here is an example from one of my folders, I use Jaws speech history which I first cleared, then I did my thing and let Jaws speak and after that went into speech history with the layered keystroke Jaws Key+Spacebar followed by H where I did a select all and Control+C for copy:

First I am just using the arrows:
DHL
Lumber Yard
Bigrock 02-10-2017
Christmas 2016 Ad
Dental Invoices 2016 and 2017

Now I am on the file Dental Invoices" and I do a say line:
Dental Invoices 2016 and 2017
‎5/‎2/‎2017 ‏‎10:24 AM Adobe Acrobat Document 71 KB
5 of 17

Say Line on DHL which is a folder not a file:
DHL
‎5/‎2/‎2017 ‏‎7:53 PM File folder
1 of 17

Now I use Jaws Key+Tab, the keyboard help describes it as follows: "Says the current Window + the associated prompt label":
DHL
‎5/‎2/‎2017 ‏‎7:53 PM File folder
1 of 17
Date created: ‎11/‎16/‎2016 ‏‎8:50 PM
Size: 1.78 MB
Files: DHL Express eMailShip, DHL Volumetric Calculator, ...
There are other files in that folder, but visually you only see the first two as well.

Sieghard

Thanks for your replay but neither of these options will do more than read the file you are on no index info is included.

Is there any way to get Jaws to include index? For example when you
open file explorer it would be nice to hear file 1 of whatever? This
function is available both in WE and NVDA.
Thanks

When I had it before the creator update, it worked fine. Now it doesn't want to work.
Well, I may just take it off again. Because I absolutely don't know why it won't work since I downloaded the ninite version and I even tried the classic and it still is not running right.
I do have it on my iPad.

That should be the same, otherwise just go to www.Skype.com, click on Download Skype and make sure you go past the app version. You should find this:

Skype for Windows 10 is already in your computer but if you’d like to use the classic version of Skype click here.

This is followed by a download link and if you click on it you get the desktop version. Anyways, as I said, if you got it via Ninite it probably is the desktop version.
Just open Skype and check the version with Jaws Key+Control+V, if it says 7.3.6 you have the latest desktop version. Just to be clear, it is much easier to use Skype on the iPhone than on the PC.

Sieghard

The desktop skype version?
If you have that link, could you send it?
I downloaded the ninite version of it.

Interesting. NOAA has used synths for weather reports for a while now. Their first was Paul from DEC; don't know what KIH43 uses these days, but it sounds good. Makes you proud as you run for the basement during tornado warnings.

I don’t know if this has been covered by you Carol but, to change the pitch, that feature is under the spell upper case function settings.

Hi Sieghard,

OK, thanks. This makes sense. I will try it. I sort of like all of the cursors sounding the same, but I suppose it would have advantages with separate voices.

Hi Carol,

Try the following:

1. Press, Insert / Jaws key + J, to open the Jaws context menu.

2. Press the letter, O, to open Options.

3. Press the letter, V, to open Voices, or arrow down to it & press enter.

4. Press enter on, Voice Adjustment, & tab down to, Voice Adjust. Here you can make the pitch change amongst many other setting adjustments. Make sure to Apply & Okay your changes.

Take care, Mike.

Subject: voices and pitch

Hi,

Although I am getting used to playing around with voices and their
settings, I have not been able to change the pitch for any of them. Is
this possible? For example, the Reid voice would be reasonable except
it is a bit too bassy. On the other hand, Glenn sounds better, but this
voice is too high to suite me. Is there a way I can change the
settings? Also, does pitch work for other synthes? Thanks.

Carol

Just changing the subject line to describe the actual subject of this discussion.

Also, I still prefer Eloquence since I run JAWS pretty fast, and I have yet to find any of the more human sounding voices that can be run that fast without turning to mush!

Audio Ducking is working in reverse in JAWS 18 and Windows 10 1703.

Kevin Minor

Hi.

I’m encountering an annoying problem in JAWS 18 latest version and Windows 10 1703.  Every so often when other sounds are playing, the audio in JAWS drops.  Sometimes it returns to a normal level, but other times it stays at the lower volume.  The only way I know of to fix the problem is to unload and start JAWS.  Audio Ducking is off in JAWS.

Anybody have any solution to the problem?

Thanks in advance for help.

Have a blessed day and don’t work too hard.
