I didn’t say anything like that.  That observation was for the list.  His supercilious attitude (as though I just rode into town on a head of cabbage) was uncalled for, but, as I said, there’s one in every crowd.  He’s not typical of the folks I’ve worked with over the years.  Then again, it may have been a bad day; we all have them.

Ted,

I think it is not uncommon that we speak to tech support agents that are much younger than us and have of course not been using computers as long. That however does not mean they don’t know more or can’t help with specific problems. You do of course run into some which seem to be not too knowledgeable and as far as I am concerned that is primarily a training issue, but if you call with the attitude that you have been using a PC longer and know more than you might as well not call, do the research about whatever problem you have and fix it yourself. I have been helped in a big way by Microsoft Accessibility as well as by Jaws support and other support lines on numerous occasions, if I feel I am talking to somebody who isn’t competent or willing to try his or her best I just hang up and call back or maybe ask for a higher level of support.

Regards,

Sieghard

When we first started teaching Windows to talk here at the cabinet, DFB in Kentucky was promoting JAWS.  At that time, it was basic transportation, but stable, and that was 20 years ago.  I’d like to explore NVDA in some depth, but  may not find the time in the immediate future.

Just for a tiny bit of perspective from someone who was once "on the other side" as a software developer it is unrealistic to expect any software maker to support a given version of something "in perpetuity."  Now, mind you, that's not to say that say, three or four of the most recent versions of a piece of software such as JAWS should not be simultaneously maintained, as I believe they should.  As many have pointed out, they're not seeking the new "bells and whistles" that are perpetually being added not only to JAWS, but to almost any piece of software you can name that's under active maintenance.   Freedom Scientific (now VFO) has historically been using "upgrade to the new version" as their fix for everything for as long as I've been tutoring JAWS.  What's worse, and I've experienced it more than once, is that there have been instances where the new version breaks existing functionality in specific circumstances and how that escaped testing is beyond me.

The long and the sort of it is that there are now very serious and very good competitors to JAWS that are available at little or no cost, depending on whether they ship with the OS you're using or not.  If I had my druthers the state agency for which I do most of my tutoring would have transitioned to one of those several years ago, but getting any bureaucracy to change is a long, slow proposition.  At the individual level it need not be and for certain alternatives the learning curve is not particularly steep.

That was a great unit. The only problem I had was that if the data stream to them wasn't done carefully they would lock up. As I remember it took a reboot to get them synced again.
My last one had been repaired a couple of times and had wires hanging out of it when I quit using it.

WE to JAWS documentation?

Shannon

Hi all,

I got my code and my copy of JAWS is live.

I now belong to quite a few mailing lists, and in one of the MANY messages regarding the WE to JAWS conversion it was mentioned that there were some specific documents on the topic or maybe it was a pod cast?

Has anyone else heard this? I sure can’t find it.

If anyone has the link for such things I would appreciate it if you could share it.

Ha Ha I would really love a JAWS to WE translation guide!

So many of the concepts are using different language than I am used to.

I am sure having trouble with the perspective of which curser is giving the feedback. Can I change the voices for all the different cursers? So I can tell who is talking to me?

Thanks

Shannon

Re: key labels

As was already described go to the Settings centre, make sure you load the default file with Shift+Control+D, then type "label", expand the "Key Labels" area with the spacebar. Use first letter navigation to find the key you want or arrow down the list, if you want tab not to speak press the spacebar when you are on the tab key entry to change it from "Speak" to "Mute". That's it.

One path to answer your question:

Insert keyboard 6 (settings center)
Type 'labels' in the searchbox
Tab to the tree and you will hear 'manage key labels dot dot dot'
* Usually, when you hear 'dot dot dot' this indicates a submenyu, and you press enter to access it; my experience with the manage key labels entry here is that I must use the spacebar (maybe my jaws installation is messed up)

Anyway, when you press spacebar on the manage key labels, you'll get the list of key names and their spoken/muted status. Use the spacebar to toggle the settings you want to change.

Hi Don,

Try the following:
1. Open the Settings Center with, Insert + 6 on the number row, & press, Control, Shift + D, to open Settings Center Default All Applications.
2. Arrow down to, Keyboard, & press right arrow to open.
3. Arrow down to, Manage Key Labels...., & press the spacebar to open.  Note:  Do not press enter, pressing enter will close the Settings Center.
4. After pressing the spacebar you will be in a list of keys.  Arrow down to the key you want to mute, & Tab 1 time to the, Toggle Mute Button, & press the spacebar to mute.  You'll hear Jaws announce, for example the Tab key, Tab Tab mute.
5. Tab to, Okay, press the spacebar, tab to, Apply, press the spacebar, tab to, Okay, & press enter to save your change & close the Settings Center.
Take care.

Have you tried to do what you're doing with at least one other browser, and preferably two?   I ask not because I don' think it should ultimately work in Firefox, but this could be a Firefox issue, a JAWS issue, or a webpage coding issue.   If this works under another browser we can eliminate (or at least really doubt) both the webpage coding and JAWS issues.

They are there; they are just hidden. Arrow down to the Vocalizer Expressive synthesizer. Then press Alt + V. You might have to tab once (I don't remember specifically, but you are not more than two tabs away after you hit Alt + V).
I think you can now arrow up and down to pick your voice, e.g., Susan or Alison. Arrow down to pick the voice you want to use (at least part of the time).
Then, DO THE MOST IMPORTANT THING OF ALL! Tab over, way over, until you come to a "Save As" prompt.
At that point save this "Person" as a synthesizer, e.g., SusanVoice or AlisonVoice.
Then hit apply and OK.
Now, when you do a voice adjustment, you will have synthesizers that match the name and settings for the "persons, e.g., SusanVoice."
By the way, you do this process EVEN if you downloaded the big files individually. Remember, the compressed voices all come in one file.
I'm guessing you downloaded the big files that are linked to the "person" names. That, in fact, is what fooled me.
