Jaws, windows & MS Word combination

Laura Richardson

Hello,

Currently I have Windows 7, Jaws 15, and MS Word 2010 on an HP laptop.

I will be getting a Dell laptop with an I5 processor, 8 gb of RAM, and Windows 10 Pro with the plan to stay with Jaws 15 and MS Word 2010.

Can anybody tell me if this combination will work well together?  Also, is there a huge difference between Jaws 15 vs Jaws 18 regarding the capability of what I’m able to do?

I work from home and want to make sure that I have a setup that will work well for at least several years without major problems or issues.  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Laura

I too, am unable to access the Captcha Be Gone site, so it is not just you. I have a funny feeling that Captcha Be Gone may be gone forever, probably due to low enrollment, which would be no big surprise, given that they charged $35 a year for this service, which is ridiculous considering that Webvisum is free and Rumola is only 99 cents a year for essentially the same captcha-solving service. There was a lot of buzz last year about Captcha Be Gone, but it has apparently disappeared or else is otherwise no longer accessible, , and anyone who forked over $35 for this service probably has no way of contacting the developer for a refund. Yet another case of caveat emptor.

there is, but that applied to when Firefox reached version 43. and
incidentally, the unsigned Web Visum was just basically signed by James
Scholes so WV was revived. and the Mozilla/Firefox ADO team/developer
signed and updated WV, so there are two signed versions; 0.92 and
0.95...now that FF reached version 53, FF requires extensions to use the
web API rather than the addon API. right now WV is still available thru
FF's addon manager, but that will change when FF reaches version 57 on
November 14 this year.

all we can do is to urge the Mozilla/Firefox ADO team/developers to
retool Web Visum to make use of the web extension API and hope WV lives
again.

James hasn't got the time, know how, or inclination since CAPTCHA be
Gone is available.

if you don't want to wait and are ready to bite the bullet, the best bet
is to purchase and setup CAPTCHA be Gone to solve those visual CAPTCHAs
on websites who still use them.

Rumola hasn't been updated since 2014, so who knows if it still works.

I thought there was a updated version with a digital signature that
allows it to work now.
here is some info from Brian I be leave.

If you do not already have a Webvisum account, which is free, you must
request an invitation to get one

either here:http://www.webvisum.com/main/invitationrequest, or by asking
someone you know who already has an account to log in and generate an
invitation for you.The latter technique will probably get you a faster
response.

The WebVisum invitation request is a 3-field form asking for your name,
e-mail address, and that you enter a comment of some sort in the third
field.

After getting the invitation you register here:

http://www.webvisum.com/en/main/register

Apparently, the developers of Webvisum finally decided to release a
digitally signed version of this add-on and updated the version number
to 0.9.5.You can get it here:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/webvisum/

yet it does not turn up in an add-ons search on “WebVisum” (regardless
of whether you mix case or not).

A programmer named James Scholes made a version of the Webvisum Firefox
add-on that is digitally signed so that newer versions of Firefox can
install it that’s based on the version 0.9.2.

See the article entitled, */Webvisum CAPTCHA Solver Returns to Firefox
<http://www.blindbargains.com/bargains.php?m=15142>/*, on

The direct download link for his XPI install file is:

I opened a new Excel workbook.  I cannot figure out how to rename the sheet from “sheet 1” to the name I want it to have.  I I used to use the Jaws cursor and go to the bottom of the screen to find the worksheet names and right click on the one I wanted to change.  How do I do that now?

Thanks.

Seems to work for me. Have you downloaded the Webvisum extension from the Firefox website or via the Webvisum website? You do need to get it via Firefox's extension manager.

I use google Chrome (didn't try it with other browsers) and while I could select Canada as the country and enter my name, the email field said it was read only. It did say something like step 1 of 3 and there was a link for eSupport and this seems to require you to set up a "Gigabyte Passport which basically means you have to register, set a password and so on. However, that screen had a catpcha without audio option so you would either have to use Firefox with Webvisum or have sighted help. Maybe you don't have to do this, but maybe the email field only becomes available if you are logged in or logging in will populate it? This might be one for our sighted friend Brian to take a look.

I could use the edit boxes and insert text. Here's what I did.

1. Open the page.

3. Press SPACE while on the edit box.

there is, but that applied to when Firefox reached version 43. and
incidentally, the unsigned Web Visum was just basically signed by James
Scholes so WV was revived. and the Mozilla/Firefox ADO team/developer
signed and updated WV, so there are two signed versions; 0.92 and
0.95...now that FF reached version 53, FF requires extensions to use the
web API rather than the addon API. right now WV is still available thru
FF's addon manager, but that will change when FF reaches version 57 on
November 14 this year.

all we can do is to urge the Mozilla/Firefox ADO team/developers to
retool Web Visum to make use of the web extension API and hope WV lives
again.

James hasn't got the time, know how, or inclination since CAPTCHA be

if you don't want to wait and are ready to bite the bullet, the best bet
is to purchase and setup CAPTCHA be Gone to solve those visual CAPTCHAs

See the article entitled, */Webvisum CAPTCHA Solver Returns to Firefox

just an idea, have you tried pressing the bypass keystroke (insert+home

Hi Pablo,

I think the solution is to buy a Mac or else to go back to Windows 98SE *smile*.

OK, joking aside, it sounds like something has gone wrong with your update. I updated my old laptop just a few days ago (it has I think 12 Gb of RAM) and has a second generation I5 CPU from about 2012 and I experience none of these issues. My new Asus laptop which has 16 Gb of RAM is flying along quite nicely and while Jaws occasionally takes the plunge as it always has it happens quite rarely. In fact, for the last couple of months I am having a huge issue on my Windows 7 desktops at work where Outlook 2016 suddenly decided to be extremely unreliable, often it won’t open at all and that is even when my sighted staff uses the PC without Jaws. I have no idea what is going on there as I have none of these issues on my Windows 10 laptop and I badly need to find the time to see if reinstalling office may do the trick here. Some of these desktops are getting on in years, but I am using an Intel NUC mini PC in my office which is only I think 2 years old and it has the same problem. Other Office applications like Excel or Word work normally, it’s just Outlook that is causing the problems.

  • Jaws 18 last release crash when I am working on excel, or word, or outlook 2016.
  • OneDrive for some reason is working very bad. Trying to upload files to be share between several computers, I heard upload locked almost every time.
  • Jaws is working very unstable
  • Now 32gb is not enough memory to work. Before I didn’t have these memory problems.
  • This situation is happening in 3 different computers with I7 processors and 32gb of ram.

Guys, there is something that I should modify, or just I need to go back to the previous windows 10.

Thanks

Re: which antivirus program for jaws 18 on win10?

Sieghard Weitzel <sieghard@...>

Hi,

I have been using Security Essentials the minute it was available on Windows 7 many years ago now, now on my Windows 10 laptop I am using Windows Defender. I always make sure my Windows version is up to date with the latest updates and patches and on my 5 work desktops and two laptops I never had an issue in 10 years of using the Microsoft product. I spend a lot of time online, I have staff using the desktops at work and of course we use common sense when it comes to installing stuff or clicking on links in fake emails. I bet you can name any reputable anti-virus program and I can find you articles on the internet saying it is not a good solution or another one is better, I think Windows Defender is as good as any and if you look at free anti virus programs you have to at least ask why they are free and how good they are compared to the solution from a company like Microsoft who has huge resources or those of large security companies like Norton. Incidently it was Norton where a couple of years ago I read that one of their premium security suites was discovered to have some major weakness which the of course would have fixed, but it goes to show that it can happen just the same.

Which antivirus program is actually accessible with jaws 18 (or nvda) on windows 10? Heard that windows deffender is not such a good virus scanner.

Thanks in advance, Helmuth
