I certainly agree with this advice to submit to NFB, if this is a course that you would like to pursue.  Maybe this has been told to other individuals who accepted their advice.

Although screen reader accessibility may exist, it does not exist with this organization.  Stand strong!!

Good Afternoon,

I am enrolled in a medical transcription and editing course. I have emailed the company offering the course with some questions concerning tech support. I told them I use a screen reader. I was told I should drop their course because screen readers are not compatible with the editing software. The software is Mmodal. I was wondering if there were any medical transcription and editing people on this list who can tell me what they use that is accessible with JAWS. Also, how did they receive the training?

I had to give up a job about 20 years ago for the exact, same reasoning. Evidently, not all medical software is screen reader compatible.

Re: Medical Transcription and Editing

I'm not doing anything here other than making an observation (and one I wish I didn't have to make) but there is a lot of custom software out there still being written today where accessibility is not being taken into account in any way.  That warning about incompatibility of the specific software this course uses may not be false.

I've just gone through working with an application used in public schools all over the country called Power School and to say it's an accessibility nightmare is an understatement of epic proportions.  It's sad that this is still an issue (particularly in the case I mention because it's a web-based application) but it is, and the folks who run the program are doing you a favor if what they are saying is accurate.

I also had a former client who was taking a medical transcription class online, so accessible training and software definitely exists.

Re: How can I copy image from a document?

Once a picture is selected in an MS-Word document it is just like any other object in terms of copying and pasting.

If you wish to save it externally then once you have it selected bring up the context menu and "Save as picture" will be one of the options.

Re: Jaws script for switching between applications

Tony Malykh

All:

I did some investigation, and I figured out that my problem only
happens when I release the windows key *very* quickly after the
shortcut. If I hold the Windows key just a fraction of a second
longer, then switching apps becomes reliable. I guess I can claim this
to be a temporary workaround, but I am a fast typer, so it is going to
irritate me forever that I'd have to slow down my app switching
because of a silly bug in Windows. However, that also explains why I
seem to be the only person in the whole world who suffers from this
bug.

Also I am now working on an autoit script. If it works, then it would
solve my problem by detecting the moment when the focus is stuck in
the "task switcher" window, and then sending some keys to the taskbar
to reactivate the right window again.

Randy,

I was thinking about autohotkey. After some time I realized that it's
going to be pretty hard to write scripts in it that are as convenint
as Windows+digit hotkey.

With Windows+digit hotkey you can switch to any Cygwin window if you
have multiple Cygwin windows. And I do have multiple Cygwin windows,
typically 4 or 5. If I want to switch to the fifth Cygwin window I
just hold the windows key and then press the digit 2 five times in a
row. Implementing similar functionality in autohotkey is not
straightforward if possible at all. Even if that is possible in
autohotkey, then it's going to be difficult to figure out the order of
Cygwin windows. If possible. The order of the Cygwin windows in the
taskbar is specified by the order these windwos have appeared in the
system. So in order to track the order of Cygwin windows I'd have to
write some script that runs constantly and tracks all the visible
windows in the system. That's going to be quite a project...

As I mentioned above, I'm now trying to solve the problem with autoit,
which is in my understanding somewhat similar to autohotkey. But I'm
not trying to define the shortcuts, but rather detect the situation
when the bug happens and trying to fix it on the fly. Well see if it
works.

Sieghard,

Thanks for your suggestion. I really like the Windows+Ctrl+digit
shortcut, I'm going to use it a lot.
But unfortunately the original Windows+digit shortcut is not reliable
on my both computers. As I mentioned before, I figured out that you
need to release the windows key very quickly for this bug to
reproduce. You can try to press the windows+digit shortcut really
fast, as fast as you can in fact, and then perhaps you'll reproduce it
on your computer.
The Ctrl+Windows+digit shortcut doesn't seem to have this problem no
matter how fast I press it.

Thanks
Tony

Been there, done that, got a t-shirt, still announces leading apostrophe on anything but none.  I need other symbols announced, such as percent, at signs, plus, star, etc. but don’t want apostrophe.  Can turn it off for trailing and imbedded, but not leading.

I started to go into the dictionary and put in apostrophe,
then for the sound a spacebar, but I realized that if I was
proofing by arrow, it would announce space instead of
apostrophe. Hard one to win there.

Hola!

I cannot recall what it is called in JAWS, but ever since I received
the various upgrades this past weekend; both JAWS and the Win10
upgrades, my JAWS no longer decreases background program volume, such
as; with WinAmp, or any other program.

And, yes, I have checked in JAWS Options and the appropriate check box
is indeed still checked.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.
