Re: Need Accessible Website Hosting / Creation Referral

Hi Jennifer!

What I have found so far is that Drupal (drupal.org), in particular Drupal 7 is supposed to be *very* accessible.  Also, I have signed-up with BlueHost; a hosting service.  This seems the way forward.  I am just starting out doing this webmastering stuff myself too.  Maybe we can share learning experiences together?

Best,

Richard

I have ben doing some research on setting up my own web site and have not found a lot of great information.

It does seem that basic management is possible, especially if you use Wordpress to set it up. Everyone I have spoken to, or found referencing the experience on line, had sighted assistance for the original creation. That is even true of the Mystic Access people with the new sight there. One blind person I know uses Bluehost and after getting it set up with some assistance, has been managing it herself.

If you learn more, I would appreciate it if you share. :)

I am not affiliated with Mystic Access, but I did notice they have a tutorial for Wordpress that I am thinking of taking myself.

Note that this is not so much about things appertaining to domain names.  I know about them, and am OK about getting them.  That said, if the same one site that was accessible, could host my webpage and also had some webpage creation resources also happened to have domain establishment and purchasing capabilities that would be super!

I had a look at this and I don't think you can just sign up as an individual, this is made for companies and while it says this is currently free until the end of September, I doubt that even if you could sign up, you would get much out of it unless you are part of a company that uses it.

I can get around using my iPhone however there are times when it would be useful to use my PC and JFW. Does anyone have some tips?
It does seem a bit different than the regular Facebook site.

Re: Win 10's lock screen?

But if you disable for it to ask for a password when it goes to sleep it should only require a password when you reboot or start it up after it was turned off.

Anyways, in Windows 10 you can also change it from a password to a strictly numeric PIN. Just as on the iPhone whatever length  you make the PIN it will automatically submit the entry after you type in the required numbers. For example, I have an 8-digit PIN which I can type on the keypad in no time at all and since it’s a PIN I don’t have to press enter afterwards.

Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign in options.

Here you can specify if the computer requires you to sign in after it goes to sleep, if you set this to “Never” then when you wake up the computer it will go straight back to where it was.

Hi Mario,

I remember this emphasis option from way back.  It was probably back around versions 4, 5, 6....., but I don't have a clue as to when it removed.  It was located in the same place where you adjust spell rate & upper case pitch.

Mike, although I never saw such a feature in JAWS, (maybe I wasn't aware
or paying attention <grin>), maybe FS took it away when they removed the
Say all choice when defining a profile, since now you have to switch to
a different profile when you want to use a more human voice for reading
long reads.

I think it occurred around version 12 or 13, maybe?

I know there is an inflexion adjustment with the Espeak voices when
using NVDA. There was such an adjustment for Eloquence in the
SiRecognizer screen reader from Italy that was based on the Espeak
concept. but I don't know how they did it.

Re: Increasing Emphasis & Inflection

Lisle, Ted (CHFS DMS)

Don’t think I remember that, Mike.  The reasoning behind the extra voices is they’re supposed to be more “natural,” and over  the years they have improved.  Nonetheless, I still go for Eloquence for the smoothest flow.  Whether or not they give Olivier or Hepburn a run for their money, I seldom have to ask for a  repeat, and I can’t say that yet about any of the new voices, not even my beloved Karin.

You mean the feature where you set the amount of pitch
inflection on things like capital letters? I remember it,
but can't find it now. I think it went the way of other
cool features like setting a separate voice for say-all.

Mike, I don't know, but I do wonder this? Do you have yours
set to no punctuation? I have mine set to some, and I hear
questions, like I have asked here.

Bye for now,

Hi All,

Is there anywhere in Jaws to change settings for increasing
how much emphasis & inflection Jaws uses? When I write a
question Jaws says it like any other sentence, & I would
like to change this if possible. It seems like Jaws used to
have this option, but doesn't anymore. Running Windows 7 &
J15 thru 18.
Take care.

Re: Win 10's lock screen?

Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign in options.

Here you can specify if the computer requires you to sign in after it goes to sleep, if you set this to “Never” then when you wake up the computer it will go straight back to where it was.

Regards,

Sieghard

Is there a way to turn the lock screen off when windows comes out of sleep mode. Jaws isn’t always working well with it. So far, I’ve found no setting like I did with win7. Thanks.

Re: Need Accessible Website Hosting / Creation Referral

Jennifer Jackson <jennsjackson@...>

Hi!

I need to create and publish a simple webpage.  My skills for this are limited.  Is there some site that I can use to host and create a website that is accessible?  If the site also had some accessible resources about how to go about doing all this, like exactly how do you write the webpage itself ala HTML, that would be a bonus!

Note that this is not so much about things appertaining to domain names.  I know about them, and am OK about getting them.  That said, if the same one site that was accessible, could host my webpage and also had some webpage creation resources also happened to have domain establishment and purchasing capabilities that would be super!

Thanks,

Richard

Re: Managing paperwork with O penbook

Jennifer Jackson <jennsjackson@...>

Thanks for the suggestions and your thoughts on open book for paperwork management. It is amazing how much open book Candy now compared to when I first started using it a gazillion years ago. I me look into a more sophisticated or accurate program later, but between Openbook and KNFB on my phone I think I can do everything I need to do for the time being.

I love using open book with my pearl camera. I do use it some for reading mail, as well as my KNFBREADER reader app. I hadn't thought about it, but you could save the images of the bills on your computer. The only reason you may want to still consider keeping some bills or other paperwork, is for tax purposes. But you should be able to save most things on your computer.

Good Morning,
The easy version of this question is can Openbook and the Pearl camera be used to make electronic copies of documents for record keeping?

Is anyone else here using Openbook to manage your mail and paperwork? I just started using Openbook again after many years and am trying to get re-familiar with it.

I just used it for a bill that came in the mail and it occured to me that rather than saving this piece of paper, I should be able to save an image of it and then put both files in a folder in Openbook or on my hard drive. Any tips or suggestions for this will be appreciated.
