I’ve seen Android based tablets with 16 gigs go for as little as $39.00 on Amazon.

But I tried in vane to learn the Talk Back and the whole blind droid thing. I’m no dummy, but to heck with that Android fill in the blank. No offense to the Android crowd, but it was so easy, to pick up an IPhone and roll right out of the box!

Just my 1.27 cents worth from an ordinary average blind guy! LOL!

Since this is a Jaws list, I can only assume that you’re looking for something Windows based? I’ve seen sales for  refurbished Surface tablets in the range  of $350 to $500, but at that price, a low end laptop or refurbished laptop may end up giving  you more bang  for your buck.

I know Dell and other companies used to make affordable Windows tablets, but I haven’t kept up to date on that market as I haven’t had the need for one.

With this sort of purchase, you’re going to want  to pay attention to specs. The last thing you’ll want is to be fighting with a sluggish machine while at  the same time trying  to take notes or whatever.

Sophos AntiVirus & Jaws Accessibility

Mike B. <mb69mach1@...>

Hi All,

I've been hearing a lot about the Sophos antivirus program, & I would like to get some feedback from people that are currently using this program, or have used it in the past.  How does it compare to MSSE, AVG, or any of the other free antivirus programs that people are running?  How accessible is it with Jaws?  We're running Windows 7 Pro, Outlook Express, & Jaws 15 thru 18.  All feedback will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks much.
Take care.

Re: Firefox vs. I.E.

Get a Windows 7 machine although I really don’t know why you torcher yourself with computer technology that is a decade old or older. I mean no offense, but considering that you can pick up a decent Windows 7 or Windows 10 laptop or desktop for $500 or $600 (I assume you are in the US) I just don’t get the point. Yes, you would have to also pay to upgrade Jaws, but unless the $1,200 or $1,500 it would take is totally out of your reach to me this doesn’t make sense. Windows XP is wide open to attacks as no security updates have been released in 2 years. I don’t of course know what you do with your computers, but I use mine daily for my business as well as personal use and I could not even do what I need to do on a 10-year old machine let alone I’d be scared to death the hard drive would die any day now and I’d loose a lot of important stuff. Keep in mind this I sjust my opinion. I also still have one old PC desktop at my store which is 9 years old, but it still can run Windows 7 and actually could run Windows 10, but I have already purchased a replacement HP Mini PC for it so there is no point in trying to bother to upgrade it. Apart from that I love Windows 10 and think it’s absolutely the best Microsoft has ever made, Windows 7 had that honour prior to Windows 10 and of course it keeps getting better with every major update.

Firefox and Webvisum work fine together, but you now have to download
Webvisum via the Firefox Add-Ons Manager (in the Tools menu) and not via the
Webvisum website. Go to Tools > Add-Ons Manager, once the page loads, use
Jaws Key+F7 to bring up the list of links on that site and go to "See more
add-ons", it's the last link for me when I just did this. Once that page
loads you have a search box, type in "Webvisum" and press enter. After the
page loads use your heading quicknav keys to find where it says "Search
results for Webvisum" or use Jaws Find and simply search for Webvisum again
on that page. Below the "search results heading you find a link for
"Webvisum requires restart, clickable" and underneath that the explanation "
The ultimate web browsing helper for blind and visually impaired Internet
users!".
Press enter on the Webvisum requires restart and allow the installation,
then Firefox needs to restart and once it does you will be asked for your
user name and password for Webvisum, you can check the box to remember this
and once done Webvisum will always load and you will get signed in when you
start Firefox.

Apart from that I agree with the opinion of others, IE is still my preferred
browser, but I think it is essentials to have at least Firefox on your PC
also as some sites no longer support IE well and I think everybody should
have a Webvisum user name and password and take advantage of this great tool
for solving captchas.

This has been my experience as well. However, I have to admit that I'm
having more problems with the latest version of Firefox. I believe it's
version 50.1.

I am finding that I often have to launch Firefox several times to
successfully navigate certain web sites.

I can get to the start page, but shortly afterwords, Jaws goes silent, and
refreshing the page does no good.

The only way to solve the issue is to exit out of Firefox, and then re-start
the browser.

Not very convenient.

Once that page loads you have a search box, type in "Webvisum" and press enter. After the page loads use your heading quicknav keys to find where it says "Search results for Webvisum" or use Jaws Find and simply search for Webvisum again on that page. Below the "search results heading you find a link for "Webvisum requires restart, clickable" and underneath that the explanation " The ultimate web browsing helper for blind and visually impaired Internet users!".
Press enter on the Webvisum requires restart and allow the installation, then Firefox needs to restart and once it does you will be asked for your user name and password for Webvisum, you can check the box to remember this and once done Webvisum will always load and you will get signed in when you start Firefox.

Apart from that I agree with the opinion of others, IE is still my preferred browser, but I think it is essentials to have at least Firefox on your PC also as some sites no longer support IE well and I think everybody should have a Webvisum user name and password and take advantage of this great tool for solving captchas.

Regards,
Sieghard

I agree that it depends on the site. However, when last I checked, Firefox would not allow for Webvisum to be installed. It gave some kind of error about the certificate not being published. I never did find a way around it.

Hello Mike,
I am surprised you did not receive a bunch of responses to this one.
I personally prefer IE. But also have FF for it's webvisum feature. If memory serves there are lots of people who prefer FF.
Cheers

I'm a fairly new Jaws user. Which of these two browsers works best with Jaws? I've used Firefox for years, but With Window Eyes, the mouse keys stopped working.

Re: Regarding "lock screen"

I usually just press Enter and that will put focus into thefield for my PIN. It could be different if you use a password instead of a PIN, but I really like the PIN since I can quickly punch it in on the keypad and whatever length I set Windows knows when I have entered the appropriate number of digits and it will just login without the need to enter the password and press enter.

On accident I hit Windows and L keys together and heard "Lock Screen."
I couldn't get out of this and finally had to perform a "Restart."

It's usually Escape or Ctrl-Alt-Del to get to the password prompt, then enter your password to return to your desktop session.
