What free PDF reader should I install on my new Windows 10 laptop running JAWS 17?

Tim Ford

HI all,

I am setting up my brand new Windows 10 laptop, and want to know what free PDF Adobe Reader program I should install?  I want whatever free version works best with JAWS 17.  It would be great if you could also provide the link or notion of where I go to download such program.

Much thanks for any suggestions,
Tim Ford

Re: question regarding deleting earlier version of windows10 windows.old

Hi,

It is listed as “previous Windows installation” under Disk Cleanup.

Cheers,

Joseph

This is Marv again.  The windows.old does not show up in disk cleanup; when I try to delete windows.old directly from the disk, I get access denied need permission from SYSTEM to continue; so more advice would be appreciated.

Good evening list, Marv here.  I have a question regarding deleting a file folder; I received a notification saying windows.old could be deleted.  This is an earlier version of windows 10.  The problem I am having is I keep getting a message stating access is denied; I need permission from SYSTEM to delete this folder, the computer says.  I am running jaws18 and windows 10, 1607.  Any advice on how to delete/get the permission I need would be appreciated.

Re: Reading smile emoticons

Once again, this is not a Jaws feature, it requires the Leasey Advanced scripts from Brian Hartgen to which I posted a link earlier.

Mike, could I possibly have the email address for the support person? I've
been trying to sort things out and have some questions: Having been told
that Malwarebytes and Microsoft Security Essentials would have a conflict, I
uninstalled Malwarebytes. Today, I called Dell support and spoke with an
agent who finally let slip that there's a difference between the free MWb
and Malwarebytes antimalware pro. Pro has malware removal and virus
protection in one, and that, yes, could be a bad idea. My question is: can I
trust that Malwarebytes Pro will start with Windows? I have set it to do
that, but I don't see it as an open window. Should I, or does it run in the
background? I tried to ask the Dell person, but she was of the less cordial
variety and kept stating that this wasn't really a Dell issue. Most support
people from Dell will remote in and quickly tell you without much ado
whether or not. I wasn't asking her to reinstall my entire system...

Cheers,

Gudrun

Howdy All,

I was told at 1 time by MWB that MwB 1.75 & 2.2 didn't use the same
definitions, but I thought I had better confirm, so below is my question to
MWB tech support, & their reply.

Subject: Difference Between MWB 1.75 & 2.2 JAN 30, 2017 | 10:50AM PST
Original message Hello,

I'm trying to tell other blind users of MWB that 1.75 does not use the same
definitions as 2.2, as I was told by someone from MWB, but I'm not computer
literate enough to explain the difference. Would you please tell me if 1.75
does or does not use the same protection definitions, & explain the
differences if not? This will really help many members of the blind
community help understand your product & possibly upgrade to the newer
version, if necessary. By the way, MWB 3.0 is not accessible for us blind
people using screen reading programs.
Take care.

Hello Mike,

Welcome to Malwarebytes support, my name is Lisa and I'll be discussing this
issue with you. Version 1.75 and 2.2.1 do use the same definitions database,
but 2.2.1 includes a rootkit scanner and better / faster remediation.

I do realize that Jaws works really well with version 1.75, and 2.2 leaves a
lot to be desired of when it comes to compatibility with screen readers,
Jaws in particular.

Malwarebytes 3.0 is supposed to be compatible with screen readers, but what
I'd like to do is install Jaws on my test machine and see for myself how
well it does.

I'll get back to you later this evening and relay my findings to you.

Best regards,

I'd be interested too. I don't think your version of Windows matters, but the version of JAWS probably does. FYI, I'm using 16 on Win7 and it reads okay, at least the two that Sieghard posted.

Re: Reading smile emoticons

Interesting, now that I see the message I sent Jaws reads the smile and frown emoticon I put in it, but I also put a grinning face and a face with stuckout tongue and it reads them as some strange code, but again in this reply as I am typing it if I go to the message underneath this it reads them correctly.
