I called FS asking to be notified by email. They said SMA stuff on their site so asked where? They said:

But sometimes I forget so I wrote to

I should have stated that FS could also save on mailing costs.
BTW I have always just called FS and gave them my cc number without my signature.
Here is what I asked FS:
Dear Management at FS:
You state that your company fosters the independence for the blind so I suggest that active clients on your database not only receive a printed letter in the mail but also receive an email notifying him or her that their SMA for renewal for Jaws or OpenBook or other products are due. If paid by a specific date then the FS discount applies.
I would imagine when you automatic snail mail a letter notifying customers that their SMA is expiring, that many may not open the letter on time and more would renew because they would automatically know via email. This is a very simple implementation and could be triggered when your letters are triggered.
I know that this form letter appears on your web site but an email would remind all of us about new upgrades to all FS software and products.
Just an idea to improve my own independence.

I'm glad you clarified. It crossed my mind to be clearer this morning, but
it was early and my mind was a bit foggy.

Do you agree with this? FS should have suggested that Kimber first try the
/default switch method. If nothing changed, it would show that neither her
user settings nor third party scripts were at fault. However, if the result
had been an improvement in performance, the settings and scripts needed to
be copied to another folder and deleted from the user settings folder. Then,
as you say, the individual files could be copied back one by one to find the
culprit.

I think I'm just restating what you said, but I want to be sure. I do think
FS's proposed initial step was too drastic, causing a lot of work for many
users who would receive it and perhaps discouraging others completely.

Agree that the suggestion is nebulous, but it just underscores that they
don't have a clue, or that they can't duplicate what you're experiencing.
The latter is usually what happens to me -- their exact setup matching
mine
works just fine for them.

As to their suggestion of "resetting the JAWS user settings" all I can
think
of is either clear out all your user-defined scripts from the ENU folder
(which you only do after backing them all up somewhere), or using the
settings center and setting the user dialog items to their default values.

Agree that the suggestion is nebulous, but it just underscores that they
don't have a clue, or that they can't duplicate what you're experiencing.
The latter is usually what happens to me -- their exact setup matching
mine
works just fine for them.

As to their suggestion of "resetting the JAWS user settings" all I can

of is either clear out all your user-defined scripts from the ENU folder
(which you only do after backing them all up somewhere), or using the
settings center and setting the user dialog items to their default values.

Adrian,
The two solutions that you are comparing don't have the same purpose. Running JFW with the /default switch just lets you test the program temporarily with only the default settings and scripts. This helps you determine if any settings or third-party scripts in your user settings folder are at fault.

The other posted solution tells you what to do if the test you just ran proves that user settings or third-party scripts are the cause of your problem. It tells you how to get rid of them and start over with the default settings and scripts. Backing up any third-party scripts preserves them for placing back in the user settings folder later, preferably one at a time if you suspect that one of them may be at fault.

To set JAWS to the defaults:

email that my SMA renewal is on its way by snail mail. I assume many of us
whose SMAs run out with JAWS 13 will be receiving the email and/or the snail
mail.

Thanks for responding. I was previously using ChartNet for medical
transcription. The company I was working for lost the account and 20 or so
people were laid off. The hospital was acquired by another health care
group who uses a different medical transcription service, and another
platform. Since I've been on these accounts for 6 years, I was hired by the
new company. I am being trained to do both straight transcription work and
speech recognition editing. I'm struggling with parts that require mouse
clicking, but starting to make progress. I updated to JAWS 13 and the
latest version of Magic Pro this week. I'm at best, a bad JAWS user so I'm
reviewing some help files on keyboard commands. Beyond Text is partly an IE
based program with a separate application called T2K which I just used
successfully today for the first time with the help of the trainer over the
phone. Of course, she isn't used to training someone who uses JAWS so our
terminology isn't always the same. We are both relatively new to this new
company. I'm brand new and she's had 8 weeks on the job. In Beyond Text,
there are a "plethora" of dialogue boxes. Each one has it' sown set of
keyboard shortcuts specific to it. One uses "alt-a" to add a doc's name to
a cc list, even though this is the command for opening up the Favorites menu
on the IE tool bar. In the manual, it sates "do not open Favorites or it
will close Beyond text." Of course when I used "alt-a" Beyond text shut
down. While this is an obvious keyboard conflict, alt-a seems to work for
my trainer on her computer and she hasn't heard of anyone else having this
problem. A friend of mine who is a programmer said he couldn't find any
information on disabling this keyboard shortcut in Internet Explorer.
There's an add button that I am not sure works right now, but will find out
today and report back.

By the way, I use Outlook Express and don't know how to search through the
body of the email to find things, so any help on that would be appreciated
too.

Yes, it costs extra, in the neighborhood of $150-$200, as I recall. The
price depends on whether you purchased the standard or pro edition of JAWS.
The SMA entitles you to two JAWS upgrades, typically occurring over the
course of two years, and free tech support during that time. You would need
to obtain it before the next upgrade, or else you'll end up paying much more
for that upgrade, so you may wish to contact FS soon.

I don't endorse the practice or the price. I'm just reporting FS's terms.

This is a real issue, because there are no guarantees that JAWS or any screen reader will work with a company/agency's software; and in these poor economic times employers want guarantees before they'll hire. I will not go into my situation as I know I'm walking the line here, but lists like this are so important as we can share and learn and hopefully get some ideas about where we can fit in this world where everywhere we go we must face some computer application and figure out how to make it work for us.
