This is a real issue, because there are no guarantees that JAWS or any screen reader will work with a company/agency's software; and in these poor economic times employers want guarantees before they'll hire. I will not go into my situation as I know I'm walking the line here, but lists like this are so important as we can share and learn and hopefully get some ideas about where we can fit in this world where everywhere we go we must face some computer application and figure out how to make it work for us.

I have found out that some special symbols within a text are completely ignored by jaws. I am meaning those that are not among the usual punctuations. For instance, some mathematical symbols like times, which looks like a cross, meaning multiplication, is correctly announced by Jaws. However, another symbol which represents proportionality [∝] is completely ignored by jaws. I could define a dictionary entry for such symbols. I did it with my bill pay service. But, the amount of flash, and or other things happening on facebook, are causing it to freeze up a lot so I get stuck and can not navigate due to being locked up. I feel this is all a flash thing but there may be other things at play as well. I am using windows xp, jaws 12, and internet explorer. Deb

Jaws 11 / Focus 40 BT

My daughter has been using her FS Focus 40 BT in uncontracted braille mode with Jaws 11 for quite a while, but she had use one before in contracted mode. I believe she said it always displays contracted but she has to type uncontracted. I actually didn't realize the keyboard was running uncontracted as she flies along pretty quickly and it looks the same to confused sighted parents like myself trying to keep track of our braille-using kids.
Can someone tell me how to toggle between contracted and uncontracted (grade 2 / grade 1) please? I suspect it is a simple keystroke, but I'm not finding the solution in the print manual, nor does my third grader see it in the braille version. (She's actually often able to find things like this for herself.) Thanks so much for any help with this.

Hi all,
I came into this late, so this may be a different thing, but please bear with me and help if you can as it's very annoying. I'm using JAWS 12.0.1170 with either IE 9.0.8112.16421 or Firefox 7.0.1 on a Windows 7 Home Premium Dell laptop. Now, that the preliminaries are out of the way, here's the issue. I can go into IE with no problems, but when I try to go into Firefox either straight in or from a link in an email, I hear the page name followed by menu use left or right arrow to navigate, but left, right, up, down, f6, control f6 do nothing. I have to hit the alt key and hear the usual file menu message then I have to hit it again to hear leaving menu and I'm on the page. Also, I might add, It is almost impossible to access the file menu with just the press of the alt key. I have to go through many steps and some of them involve routing cursors and hitting the left mouse button. Is this a Mozilla Firefox, Windows 7, Dell laptop, JAWS or something else issue? Is there a fix or am I crazy? Thanks. Lisa
