And thanks to everyone else for your input. I realize that my description is rather vague, but given the randomness of the occurrence, it's about as specific as I can be. My hope in contacting FS was two fold: first that if perhaps they had heard the same report from others that there might have been a more solid solution. second, that if they do hear the same report in future that they might investigate something more conclusive than "try deleting your settings." I appreciate all the ideas that were offered. K

Respectfully, even if it didn't fix your problem that sort of thing is what is recommended to do first even when a lot of info is available with most electronic system problems.
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Some problems may have more than one cause and it is not always practical to chase some specific detailed remedy before trying things like rebooting hardware or clearing out settings, preferences or the like. Failing to clear out questionable settings first may waste a lot of time or even introduce additional problems as you continue to troubleshoot. I'm no FS expert by amy means, but that is what I have found in working with a lot of computers and electronics over the last 30 years or so. The fact that this is a new problem to you or that it may indeed be new with rev 13 doesn't mean clearing the settings would not clear the problem, right? It may be the cure for that or some similar problem with this current release. Richard

copying text from a web page
Brian <bvarner05@...>
When I want to copy text off a web page, I select the text, use ctrl-c, then
paste it into notepad. this gets rid of all html (I think) and you get plain text you can copy into Word or elsewhere. I used to do this for medical transcription, especially drug names, then found that the medical transcription software (ChartNet) pasted the html coding asociated with the drug name instead of the plain text of the drug name. ChartNet is based on Word so that might be why the html stuff was showing up instead of plain text. By the way, I was having problems with Internet Explorer being very slow to open and going to links as new pages, etc. I tried to get rid of add ons under internet options and when I'd get to the manage add ons button, JAWS wouldn't navigate to the list of add ons reliably. FS support said JAWS doesn't read this area very well. Then I was told to upgrade to Internet Explorer 8. I was running 7. I tried doing that a couple of years ago and had issues. A computer programmer friend came over and we had to reinstall version 7 because XP seemed to be impossibly conjoined to version 7. This morning, I downloaded IE 8 and things seem to be running much better. I've not gotten stuck in the tool bar (yet) but now I'll be trying ctrl-F6 thanks to the advice from this list. Brian *********** Hi folks! I am having problems copying and pasting text from a web-site to a document. Not sure why, but I've never experienced this with other jaws versions. Other than this, jfw 13 works fairly well for me.

Agree that the suggestion is nebulous, but it just underscores that they don't have a clue, or that they can't duplicate what you're experiencing. The latter is usually what happens to me -- their exact setup matching mine works just fine for them. As to their suggestion of "resetting the JAWS user settings" all I can think of is either clear out all your user-defined scripts from the ENU folder (which you only do after backing them all up somewhere), or using the settings center and setting the user dialog items to their default values. Re: JAWS dictionary
Adrian Spratt
No one has replied to Joni's query about transferring the JDF dictionary
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
file from JAWS 6 to either JAWS 12 or 13. I've always had success merging my dictionary settings from one version to the next, but I doubt it would work going from 6 to 12/13. If I'm wrong, please post. Otherwise, can someone post simple instructions for adding personal dictionary settings to a much later version. I know, for example, that the JDF file path changed when FS included its name there, and I don't recall if that change was in effect with JAWS 6. Below I'm copying a past post from this list (apologies for not having the lister's name) and old FS instructions on this general subject, but I can't be sure they work in Joni's situation. ** Dictionary, copy from one version to another To copy those scripts over to JAWS 10, first go to the enu folder in JAWS 9, using the following path: c:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\Jaws\9.0\Settings\enu Locate the script files you want to copy and highlight them; then, press Control c to copy them to the clipboard. Now, go to the enu folder in JAWS 10, using the following path: c:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\Jaws\10.0\Settings\enu Paste those script files into this enu folder. That should do it. ** Instructions from FS in 2002 To move dictionary files from a previous version to the current version, It is best to copy the *.jdf files from the settings\enu folder of the older version to the settings\enu folder of a current version. for example, if you are attempting to move dictionary files from the Jaws 4.01.227 folder to the Jaws 4.02.52 folder, it can be done using the steps below. 1. go to the run dialog (windows key+r) 2. Type in: cmd and hit enter 3. Type in: cd\jaws401\settings\enu and hit enter 4. Type in: copy *.jdf c:\jaws402\settings\enu and hit enter This will move the dictionary files to the latest version. If you know the name of the exact dictionary file, you can use the name of the file instead of the *wild card.

I have a lot of dictionary entries in the JAWS 6 version and I really need them for work. Is there any way I can copy that file from the current work computer and put it into the new version of JAWS when I receive that computer? I don't know if it would be possible or wise to put a JAWS 6 jdf file into JAWS 11 or 12 or whatever version of JAWS I am going to work with. If this is not possible, is there a way I can get a list of the dictionary entries onto the clipboard and paste them somewhere so I know what I have added, or will I have to arrow through the list one by one and write them down? That could be quite a task. Thanks in advance for any help.
