Re: Good accessible Word to PDF primer

And, finally, if anyone wants to read tutorials on how to work with forms in MS-Word using the legacy form fields such as those used in this document,  activate this link for a DuckDuckGo search on doing so and peruse the tutorial or tutorials that suit you best.

Re: Good accessible Word to PDF primer

It occurred to me that I should just put these out on my Google Drive in case anyone wants to take a look and play with these.  The one for a business sized #10 envelope is even useful at home.  The other two are examples, anonymized, that I did for two different clients for actual work use.  The one that is the client intake form I did not put in all of the checkboxes that would be necessary under the section regarding prior health conditions, only the first two, for abdominal pain an allergies, because this was a draft, not final, copy.  Activating any of the below listed links will immediately download the noted Word document template that employs fill-in only text fields and/or checkboxes to your computer.  If you have Protected Mode enabled in MS-Word you will have to unprotect the template before you can use it.  After it is saved, and unprotected if necessary, opening the template creates a new document ready for filling in and printing and/or saving.  If you want to actually edit a form template you must open MS-Word, choose the Open File option, navigate to the template file (dot dotx file), and open it then go to the Developer Ribbon to the Restrict Editing button then remove the editing restriction.  You have to put the editing restriction back on when you're done if you don't want anything other than the various text fields and checkboxes to be able to be filled in or checked/unchecked when a new instance of a document is created using the document template file (dot dotx file).

Re: A V TG question

Were I to be calling AVG what I'd complain about, long before accessibility issues with JAWS or anything else, would be the fact that it has developed the very nasty habit of finding false positive after false positive after false positive for things that are not threats.

AVG was once my absolute favorite antivirus/security suite.  That ended about 2 years ago when this hypersensitivity began exhibiting itself and it has remained unabated, possibly gotten worse, since then.  I can't count how many "remove and replace" operations I've done for my existing clients when something else comes up so that the endless messages that make them panic for no reason stop.

Many thanks.

Re: Good accessible Word to PDF primer

Is there a particular reason that you want the final version to be a PDF?

I ask because I have created many MS-Word document templates whose sole purpose is to create new "fill-in-the-blank" form fields, checkboxes, etc., while ensuring that the remainder of the form either cannot be modified at all, which requires text fields to have some fixed maximum length, or such that the remainder of the form can move down the page as lengthy text is added in a text form field, but remain unchanged otherwise.

The fact that you can put both alternate text and help text (often the same thing, but not always) means that screen readers will read the alternate text when you land in a text box, checkbox, etc., and also allow you to hit F1 if you were in the middle of filling it out, got distracted by something else, and need to pick up where you left off but aren't sure exactly where you did leave off.

I use legacy form fields, not the newer Active X ones, to create these because I like the behavior (and, to be honest, ease) of these.

If you'd like a copy of one or two of these as examples I'd be happy to send them along.

Hello Mich,

I want to thank you so very much for recommendation of this DVD ripper. I have always wondered if there was an accessible option, and figured there was not. I was just being pessimistic, and was thus almost in shock when I downloaded, installed, and used it just now. The entire process, starting with their clear web site, through download, installation, ripping a DVD, could not have been easier, clear, and a joy to use with JAWS. I just started listening to the movie, all nicely copied onto my Victor Reader. 30 days is plenty of time to know if one wants to purchase a permanent license, which costs $38.50, and they give you another 30 days after purchase to ask for a full refund for any reason. It is very refreshing to see what I assume is a mainstream software company that makes what seems to be a totally accessible and easy to use software without having to be asked to make their product accessible.

Ann & Steve, thanks to you both.

This situation is particularly thorny for me because I have no access to
this application to play with it between tutoring sessions. When you add to
that the fact that the developers of Power School did not take accessibility
into consideration at all (which, in my experience, is exceedingly rare in
this day and age for "newer" applications, particularly web based ones) it
gets even worse. The whole situation is particularly remarkable since this
application is marketed to the public school market, one where ADA
compliance is generally not an afterthought!

I think I've already come up with an inelegant workaround but it involves
having to listen to an entire column being read, which gets pretty tedious
if you're looking for "end of the day" information. I will give your
recommendations a try.

Re: Removing JAWS 16 from a windows 10 computer

Just as a general FYI, the good, old-fashioned Control Panel, in its entirety, remains available in Windows 10 and I use it all the time, particularly "Add and remove programs" among several other usuals.

I have put the Desktop toolbar on my task bar, and access it from there.  However, hitting the WinKey and immediately typing Control virtually always gets Control Panel (desktop app) as the first item returned in the search results.  If it's not first it will be somewhere near the top of the list.  After you open it all the options you've always known and loved are there, and readily accessible in minute detail if you change the default view from "Category" to either "Large Icons" or "Small Icons."  I hate the Category view, but others may find it as comfortable as an old sweater.  I date back to the Windows 3.1 days, so an icon view is my "old sweater."

situations, the tag searched for is either temporarily
assigned to
another item, such as with a weather advisory, or the
level the
original tag was located has changed, so the query is on
the wrong
level for the search

The tags are in the same structure as your hard drive's
directory structure.

Example:

Drive C:, User, Dennis Brown, Desktop holds my Desktop
icons.
Searching that path and displaying those puppies would be
simple.

But what if Microsoft added another level, such as

Drive C:, User,Administrator, Dennis Brown, Desktop ,
then my search
query would no longer work, since it wouldn't find Dennis
Brown under
User any longer.

So, the Weather issue would be

Weather Channel, Forecast, Daily, [whatever city or zip
code data is
searched for]

and during an advisory, it inserts

Weather Channel, Advisory, Alert

It would go for the first tag after "forecast" and get
"Advisory"
instead of "Daily."

I'm reading the ResearchIt developer's manual, and hope to
have the
Baseball item done before Spring Training.

Hope this helps!

Dennis

Hi jaws users. a couple research it questions. first is
all the
sports scores options are still not available in research
it. NHL,
NBA, MLB college football and NFL scores aren't available.
is there
any timeline of these things coming back and any aditional
search
options maybe being added in the future? think research
it is great
and a really easy way to find things quickly and with the
links in
many results you can then have the option of expanding on
what you are
researching. second question is when I use research it to
get the
weather, any time national weather service issues any
alert air
quality, winter storm watch or warning or thunderstorm
watch or
warning, I have to click to get the full forecast. the
forecast isn't
in the result just current conditions. a good example was
yesterday.
at about 7:00 eastern I checked weather and a winter
weather advisory
one to three inches of snow was forecasted. we had a
holiday party
with our NFB state affiliate and it was held, but there
was no way to
cancel it and since we had paid for it, I didn't cancel,
but when I
checked weather again at
4:00 P.M. what had been an advisory suddenly was a warning
the
advisory would have expired by 4:00 but the warning was up
until 6:00.
to see the change in forecast I would have to click to get
it. it
seems to defeat research it's purpose and I sure as heck
don't want to
have another situation where I had a furious argument when
I got home
from that party we are fortunate that access link didn't
shut down
during it. they had shut down in region three the
southern jersey shore.

I believe it would be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to have
it expanded in one location and not in others (at least within the
same program).

One thing I should note, I now use the Vocalizer Expressive v2 voices
, normally Samantha, and Thu is already pronounced as Thursday. I
looked through Settings Center and do not see anything that
specifically controls that so I suspect it to be totally voice
dependent.

For some reason, I wanna say where I changed it doesn't exist, or has a

change. For some reason, my brain says adjust jaws options which I found
in
the list of managers, but I'm not seeing that in jfw 17, or I'd like to
assume that it was in one of the ribbons, but which one, lol.

Hi,

In outlook 2016 using latest jaws 17, how do I have it say Thursday
instead
of Thu? Other examples, are: Tues instead of Tuesday when I'm reading the
message headers.

I think I managed to accomplish that at one point, but I don't remember
how
I did it.

Thanks for any assistance.
