Braille display freezing with Jaws 13
Kimber Gardner
Hi All,
I'm running Jaws 13 on an xp machine with a Focus 80 USB braille display. From time to time, and in all different applications, my display is freezing up. When this happens the display becomes completely unresponsive and eventually all braille disappears as if the display is "turned off." The only way to bring the display back online is to unload and reload Jaws. Also, and on a related note, Jaws 13 seems to take an inordinately long time to reload once it's been unloaded. I have reported both issues to FS but was wondering if others are seeing similar behavior in version 13. Kim

Settings Center Ctrl+Shift+d for the default config type Key Label in the search field Enter on that Press the button. In the list, you can toggle the speak/mute state of many keys with Alt+T as you arrow through the list. Press OK to save your settings, and of course save the config. Note that these setting *do not* get merged over when you update to a new JAWS version. Also they are clobbered even if you just install a minor update. Frustrating, as it takes time to go through the whole darn list every darn time there's an upgrade, since it's buried in the default configuration file. I've already posted this to FS as something they should have fixed years ago. Dave Carlson Sent from my Dell Latitude E6520 using Windows 7, San Francisco Bay Area

Re: Merge utilities
Dave...
Joni,
toggle quoted messageShow quoted text
Yes, your JAWS 12 settings are untouched. I've had FS Tech Support give me completely polarized opinions on the merge. Some say it doesn't work, other say it's the right thing to use. If you haven't done so already, first back up all your files/folders in the enu folder to some other location. I've had mixed success with the merge utility. It does not merge everything, and just to be sure, I copy all my place markers and personalized settings files from the older to the newer version. Even after all that, there is still a lot of tweaking I need to do. Especially the Key Labels, where I like to mute several of the special keystrokes. Merge does not, and never has merged these. In fact it's interesting to note that never has a JAWS installation completed with the default voice settings I used on the previous version. I always end of with the "Valium" voice and need to go through all the bother of changing all those voices. Seems like FS is missing the very obvious simple things over the years. Hi Brian,
The lady I wrote to was not familiar with the Beyond Text platform. I asked about it on 3 different MT lists so will let you know if I hear anything back. I assume since the platform is called Beyond Text that you are possibly doing voice recognition editing, is that correct? Were you successfully using a platform previously and then the platform changed, or are you trying to begin work with a new company? What version of JAWS are you using? Joni
