I know this is a Jaws list, but I was hoping somebody could point me
to a tutorial or Podcast on NVDA and maybe answer one question: how
can I unload NVDA? I assume there is a shortcut key for this similar
to Jaws Key+F4 for Jaws. I downloaded NVDA and it started up in this
horrible voice. I had it years ago and bought Eloquence and I just
have to figure out again how I can get this set up as I'd like to
learn how to use it a bit as a backup to Jaws. Hopefully having bought
this once will allow me to still use it. I did manage to set it so it
doesn't start automatically so I can always reboot the computer to get
rid of it, but earlier I was going to open Notepad for which I usually
set up the shortcut key Alt+Control+N only to realize that apparently
NVDA has userpted this key combination and it came up again. It does
say how to get into the menus for NVDA, but that default voice is so
bad that I can't for the life of me understand the key combination for
that.

Ah, having used Jaws for 27 years has made it hard to get used to
anything else, it's like an old shoe that just fits so well.

Hi Alan,

I didn’t know about this website, I am just trying it out by installing NVDA and Skype. Also, I commented earlier that this wouldn’t take into consideration whether you have a 64 Bit version of Windows when somebody provided a link which directly downloaded iTunes from this site. When I read through what was available I did now see that there is a note explaining that 64 Bit versions of software are downloaded if you use a 64 Bit version of Windows so I take back what I said earlier.

Try installing iTunes with the .exe file from:

www.ninite.com

I always use this as it just installs the program without any other junk. Regarding the help menu, I just checked it and I can read parts of it but generally most is written for sighted folks which is not that helpful for us.

See if you can get this installed from there and then we can try to get it set up so you can use

Hi Annabelle,

I just tried the Help file in iTunes 12.5.1, I am running Windows 10 and the Jaws 18 Beta and it seems to work fine. I am not at home right now and have a pretty slow internet connection and it took several minutes for the HTML page to load, but once that was done Jaws read the table of contents and while the items there are not announced as links, pressing enter on, for example, “Syncing Overview” does load the text and I was able to read it with Jaws and followother links given.

Hi David,

It's nice of you to provide this link, but one thing this download doesn't do is to take into account whether the person is running a 32 Bit or 64 Bit version of Windows. If you download from the Apple website the website auto detects your operating system and the appropriate installer will download.

All you have to do is go to www.Apple.com/iTunes/Download and on this page you can use the "b" navigation quick key for finding buttons until you come to the "Download Now" button.
There are also two checkboxes which you can easily find by using the "x" quick navigtation key and a radio button (use the "r" quick nav key) on this page you may want to check out, the checkboxes are:

Send me iTunes updates, news, and special offers.
Keep me up to date with Apple news, software updates, and the latest information on products and services.
Obviously if you want any of these newsletters you will have to make sure that the appropriate checkbox is checked and then provide your email address in the edit field right below the checkbox items (The "e" quick key will find the edit box easily also").

The radio button shows your country and it should auto detect, but I am in Canada and often it says "United States" for me.
Once you activate the "Download Now" button the information bar (should pop up (if you use Internet Explorer) and you then just press Alt+N (F6 should also do the trick) and select "Run" or tab once to go to "Save". I recommend saving it first, then go to your Downloads folder and run it from there. It is a larger download (166 Mb for the 64 Bit version) and I just prefer to save such installers first.
While iTunes has its accessibility issues which currently are significant, the process of downloading and installing it are quite straight forward.

I have been told, when I try to look at the games, that they can’t find iTunes; when I go into “programs and features,” I also don’t see iTunes listed. So, where the heck is iTunes going, if anywhere, and if nowhere, how can I get it to download and install on my PC? Thanks!

I would think so, it is just the regular iTunes but without any of the extra things sometimes that get installed with a program as well, i.e. toolbars, etc.

Annabelle,

Try installing iTunes with the .exe file from:

www.ninite.com

I always use this as it just installs the program without any other junk. Regarding the help menu, I just checked it and I can read parts of it but generally most is written for sighted folks which is not that helpful for us.

See if you can get this installed from there and then we can try to get it set up so you can use

I wonder, why don't they have a regular help file, like a .chm for ITunes 12, like they used to have for older versions? Every time I try to access the help section, JAWS won't read what's on the screen.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: iTunes question

Hello,

I’m trying to download/in stall iTunes on my Windows 7 computer, because I wanted to play some blind-friendly games. I have been told, when I try to look at the games, that they can’t find iTunes; when I go into “programs and features,” I also don’t see iTunes listed. So, where the heck is iTunes going, if anywhere, and if nowhere, how can I get it to download and install on my PC? Thanks!
