Hi, Gudrun. Try the file with 64 in the name. If you don't have a 64-bit system, it won't install. Then you will know to download the other file.

I realize the following doesn't exactly answer your exact query, but as a long time Windows user who generally wants to find lost files based on a partial or full file name, I can't recommend the Everything Search Engine from Voidtools <https://voidtools.com/> . It uses a menu driven interface and a single edit box to enter your search string, which can also employ regular expressions if you're familiar with those, and seems to be fully accessible to the extent that I've played with it with a screen reader.

I virtually never use Windows Search/Cortana at all since Everything does just precisely what I want and does it very, very quickly with minimal resource usage. You can define the drive or drives you'd like for Everything to keep constantly indexed.

          I can't speak to whether your method of adding an account will work or not, but I suspect it will.  I always add accounts for the Mail App using the "Manage Accounts" feature within the App itself.  I can say that accounts that are added via the "Manage Accounts" feature in the Mail App do end up showing up in the list of accounts in the system Accounts, Email & App accounts pane.   Typically the first one that appears under the "Email, Calendar, and Contacts" section is the account you have associated with your Microsoft account, which shows up with an Outlook icon even if the e-mail account itself is not an Outlook.com account.  In my case it's a Gmail account.  Directly beneath that are accounts I added in the Windows 10 Mail App, which is why I presume your technique will work, too.

          You do choose Google for any Google related service, in this case Gmail and it will also set up synchronization of contacts into the People App and the Google Calendar for that account into the Calendar App.

           It is not possible to answer your question regarding receipt of all previous mail without knowing whether the client was using POP or IMAP access in whatever e-mail client they were using previously.  If they were using IMAP they absolutely will get anything and everything they had access to before since all messages, contacts, etc., are stored on the e-mail server until or unless they are deleted.  If they were using POP most POP configurations delete messages from the server either immediately upon download to the local e-mail client or some fixed number of hours or days after the initial download.  When that occurs these messages are no longer available for future download into another e-mail client if one switches the e-mail client you're using.

           These days I tell anyone setting up e-mail for anyone to use IMAP as the access method.  The only real drawback, and it's very seldom an issue, is with access to very old messages if you are currently offline when you want to look at them, as message bodies are not kept perpetually locally when IMAP is used (at least not by default).  Many clients allow you to set IMAP access such that all messages up to a certain age will have their message bodies retained by the client, but it's not often used since the vast majority of us have an internet connection virtually all the time.   IMAP also has the distinct advantage of automatic synchronization of e-mail across multiple devices accessing the same account, where POP does not.  It's a grand PITA to have two e-mail clients running POP, one on a desktop that's always on and another on a mobile device, where the desktop client may download e-mail and then those messages are removed from the server before the mobile client ever has a chance to see them.  I once had a client with 4 devices who someone had configured POP on all of them, and it was a three-ring circus trying to figure out why certain e-mail was showing up on one device and not the others (or it was for her - I recognized the issue immediately because I've "been there, seen that" far too many times).

One of my client's would like to setup the windows 10 mail client.
I would like to just verify some information,
1, to setup the email account,
I need to go to,
Settings, windows-key+i
2, tab to the list of items, and right arrow and enter on,
Accounts,
3, then I need to again tab once,
Now, arrow down and enter on,
Email&app accounts,
4, again I need to tab and here I see, add email account,
Here I would press enter.
Now the type of account is Gmail,
So, I assume I choose google?
Now, when I go through the setup,
Will my client just receive all new messages from the Gmail account?
Or, can my client receive all previous mail.
Just want to make sure I will do this right.

Type in your file name, and, without even hitting enter, you can start
arrowing down, and your file, if it exists, will be listed. Hit the
applications key and arrow up or down till you see "open file location," and

Now that the search is complete my search for "Outlook.exe" returned 7 files and these include files which have "Outlook.exe" in the content, for example, if you have a Notepad file where you wrote "Outlook.exe" it will include that file. If you do a say line it will tell you the file name and location and you can also use the application key or Shift+F10 to get a long list of options like copy, cut, open file location,, Open, Open as Administrator (if available)Copy Path, Send To etc.

This may not be what your friend encountered, but Firefox stopped supporting the local version of WAVE some time ago. There is a new local version available for Chrome: WAVE Evaluation Tool


By local I mean that the tool is added to your PC, so your code stays private, instead of being sent to the server at WebAIM.

Since I cannot seem to reply to messages using the “reply to message” links, that come in the “digests”, I will send this information this way. 

 

This problem has unintendedly highlighted one of the problems with FS not retaining the “merge” function in JAWS 17.  If it did, you would not now be hearing all that.  I suspect that this function is back in V: 18 precisely because FS got a lot of flack for that oversight.  However, upgrading to JAWS 18 will not solve your problem.  It simply will retain, or “merge” your JAWS 17 settings into JAWS 18.

 

Being able to restrict what I “must” listen to with JAWS makes reading/listening for important stuff much easier, and I understand your frustration.  You had the right idea by going to JAWS settings; but, the “speak all” item does not refer to what you want to do.  First, I would ensure that “typing echo” is “checked”, in the default “Setting Center”, in ”user”.  I could not find this specific item; but, if you can find where it says something like “typing interupt”, and check this as well, it might help.  Then, I would suggest looking at Keyboard Manager, under the JAWS “utilities”.  The steps would be as follows:

 

1. Go to JAWS, and open the menu by pressing the ALT key.

 

2. Right arrow once to “Utilities”.

 

3. Down arrow 6 times to “Keyboard Manager” and press enter - you will be in a list of applications, on the “default” selection, which is where you probably want to be.

 

4. Tab once to the list of keyboard commands

 

5. Down arrow until you hear “ControlBackspace”; this will be “equal” to some specific key combination.

 

6. Press ALT-A, for “actions”.

 

7. Press R, for “remove”, and press enter to confirm that you want to modify this file.  This item will now read “ControlBackspace=None.

 

8. After this item, there are a series of “Control***” similar commands.  Use steps 6 and 7 for each of these so that they read “Control***=None”.

 

9. If desired, do the same with other items on this list, e.g. “delete”, “end”, “enter”, “home”, “tab”, etc.

 

For myself in fact, when I get a new version of JAWS, I go through this entire list, and “turn off”, as in the above, anything that I would not use.  In doing so, I learn a lot about what can be done with the various keystroke combinations.  I also change many of these combinations to suit my style and needs.  However, one must be careful to avoid using a combination that conflicts with something that has been assigned to a different function.  In such cases, you can decide to “not” make the change, use a different combination, or change the combination with which your new/changed entry conflicts.  You will be notified if you try to change something to a combination that does conflict, and you can follow the prompts from there.

I have been less than impressed with JAWS 17 and almost daily revert to JAWS 16.

One thing that continues to annoy me is the key announcement problem.  I have checked this at least 5 times, and finally I'm reaching out to see if someone has any ideas.

Each time I press an access key, such as control, alt, windows, or shift or any combination of the above, I hear the keys announced.

I don't mind except when I'm highlighting text.  Then, the announcement of the keys talks over the announcement of the text being highlighted.

I thought this functionality was controlled by going to the JAWS menu, choosing options, further choosing basics, and tabbing over to key announcement.

I go to the "off" radio button.  The "off" is definitely checked or activated.

IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.  I'm ready to scrap JAWS 17 entirely and hope for something better in JAWS 18.

BTW

I am looking forward to the resurrection of the merge utility, albeit under a different name.

Isn't it funny how what is essentially a bug fix gets promoted as a feature enhancement?

SVCHOST is called by a number of processes to provide services.  One I have had trouble with on occasion in the past few months is Windows Update.  If for some reason it fails to download properly at startup it will put a SVCHOST task in a loop.  The only way I could stop it was to disable automatic updates and re-boot and then try to make individual updates based on the list of failed updates in the Windows update list.  This is not an easy process.  Alternatively, one time I just turned off auto updates and left it for a couple of weeks and then came back and re-ran the Windows update process to successful completion.  You can test your system to see if this is the problem by going to windows update and pressing the update button.  If it just sits there and cannot do the updates this is probably why you are seeing the SVCHOST loop.

It could very well be, if it is a new process which didn't run before. Are you using a new browser such as Chrome that could be initiating this process? If not, use the following diagnostic tool:

 

Press Windows Key plus R for the "Run" dialog. Once the diagnostic program starts, use the Tab key to get to the "Services Tab. Uncheck

 

"svchost.exe (netsvcs)"

 

If it shows up in your MSconfig serves after you reboot, it is being initiated by another program you are using.

I’m running Windows 7 64-bit Pro on a SSD with a second, small SSd paging drive, 3 2tb spinning drive and 8gb ram which is the max on my Dell desktop with an I3 at 3.3ghz

 

At runtime I start Jaws 16 and MS Security Essentials.  Others, like Adobe, Itunes, printer and scanner management I have set to load only when needed, which is rairly.

 

Cpu usage is less than 2% at this point.

 

I usually load uTorrent which brings the usage up to 10-15 percent.

 

The system may idle at this level for days, approaching 100% when running 7-zip or audio processing programs.  It returns to the 10-15% level when those programs finish.

 

Occasionally, the idle usage goes to 50-60% with uTorrent running and to 30-40% after uTorrent is terminated and with only a browser or two open.

 

Closing all applications in the Task Manager list and the uTorrent process drops the usage to either near zero or to 30-40%.  I have not been able to determine any reason for the difference or a way to predict when the higher level will occur.  

 

Checking the Task Manager Process list shows many of the previously running processes still loaded but at most 1 or 2 processes at 1% usage and a status line entry of 30-40% total usage.

 

I have run MS Security Essentials, which has protected me for years and nothing shows.  I haven’t been able to find a version of MalWare Bytes that I can run successfully.

 

Keyboard delay is barely noticeable at 30-40% usage, noticeable at 60% and terrible at 70+%.  Probably a good pard of that is Jaws related, especially when memory load is high and paging is likely to be occurring.

 

I tend to keep multiple projects running.  I have seen 90+ entries in the process list and 25+ in the applications list.  Most are static displays but many are active with high cpu and i/o demands.  Terminating all of these programs sometimes results in essentially no cpu usage while at other times it still shows 30-40% usage.

A bunch of general notes:

·         40% CPU usage is nowhere near to "high."  If you're experiencing bad lagging at 40% CPU usage you need to see if something is thrashing your hard disc.  A machine should be flying along at 40% CPU usage if nothing else is preventing it from doing so.

·         The 64-bit Windows environment still uses lots of 32-bit processes.  Many programs that come in 32 and 64 bit will even install 32-bit by default unless instructed otherwise on a 64-bit system.

·         Many programs, whether part of the Windows OS or not (Chrome being one example) run many simultaneous processes.  In the case of Chrome it's one per tab plus a couple more (I can't remember the exact count)

·         If you are having horrible lag at system start this can very often be the result of an orphan entry in the registry or startup folder that's trying to start something that's no longer on your system.  Some programs are notorious for not cleaning up after themselves well when they are uninstalled while others can end up this way if uninstalled incorrectly.  Windows will keep trying and trying and trying to start up processes/programs that are specified as part of boot up even when they are no longer present, and it hangs waiting for a response and, after some ungodly long period of time without response, will try again to start whatever it happens to be.  (At least this has been the case for as long as I've been working with Windows.  This might have changed with Windows 10, but I doubt it.

Dear fellow listers:

I have been less than impressed with JAWS 17 and almost daily revert to JAWS 16.

One thing that continues to annoy me is the key announcement problem.  I have checked this at least 5 times, and finally I’m reaching out to see if someone has any ideas.

Each time I press an access key, such as control, alt, windows, or shift or any combination of the above, I hear the keys announced.

I don’t mind except when I’m highlighting text.  Then, the announcement of the keys talks over the announcement of the text being highlighted.

I thought this functionality was controlled by going to the JAWS menu, choosing options, further choosing basics, and tabbing over to key announcement.

I go to the “off” radio button.  The “off” is definitely checked or activated.

IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE.  I’m ready to scrap JAWS 17 entirely and hope for something better in JAWS 18.

BTW

I am looking forward to the resurrection of the merge utility, albeit under a different name.

Isn’t it funny how what is essentially a bug fix gets promoted as a feature enhancement?

I don’t know of any free OCR’s such as the $900.00 Open Book program.

But I do know that you can buy a program like DocuScan by SaroTech; for about $300.00. It is cloud based so it can be used on any of your devices. I’ve heard it works fairly well.

Other than that; if you have an IPhone, there are many free OCR apps. But the one that most of the blind go with; is the  $99.00 KNFB Reader; OCR app.

 

I don’t know if this answers your question, but I hope it helps.
