What am I doing wrong regarding computers and Bluetooth settings?
Jim Portillo
Hi there,
Hi there,
I’m hoping someone can help direct me with something I might be doing wrong regarding computers and Bluetooth devices. I’m trying to remove two Bluetooth devices from my computer. I can pair them with no problem, but for some reason, removing them is a different story. I’ll tell you what I’m doing. I am using Windows 10 and JAWS. From the start menu, I find and go to Bluetooth settings. Bluetooth is turned on, so there’s no problem there. I tab to where I find a list of the Bluetooth devices associated with my computer, arrow down to what I want, and select it by hitting enter. It lets me know it’s been selected, and I tab once to find the Remove device button. I hit enter on it, and immediately, I get something that says Flyout Window, and I read nothing else on the screen. I alt-tab back to the Bluetooth settings, look at my list again, and find that the item I tried removing is still there. I did try rebooting my computer, and everything is the same.
What is a Flyout window? And, why won’t the Enter or spacebar work when I use them on the Remove device button? It’s frustrating.
If anyone has any good tips, please let me know. Thanks. Jim

Unfortunately that software is inaccessible. I don't really think there are good accessible language-learning softwares available. For French and Spanish, there are many resources that could help that are not computer-based. If you want, drop me an email off-list and I'll ask my friend to email you a list and you can maybe talk to him, he's trying Spanish and wants to still do French.

Hi Guys,
To my bilingual learners, I bought Rosetta Stone for my wife who is also visually impaired and uses JAWS. Does anyone have any experience with the software. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated. She wants to learn French and Spanish but necessarily in that order.

Re: jaws 18 release?
Cristóbal
V18 sounds like a major snoozer. Frustrating that an SMA will be used up on the upgrade, but oh well. I’ve been writing FS for a while now requesting enhanced multilanguage support. I.E. the ability to designate a URL, domain, email address, document/folder path etc to a particular voice profile. For those of us who work and interact in different languages, this would streamline a lot of things. Having Jaws seemlessly transition to Spanish when visiting a website with the .mx .ar .es or German for example with the .de or have a particular email address for contacts or mailing lists associated with a language voice profile would be great and a more natural flow to things. Things have gotten better from the old days, but even then, the control+window key+ L command is still clunky and disruptive. Something like this can’t be terribly difficult to figure out as some of the elements are already present in jaws. Dictionary manager, Flexible Web and so on. Oh well, I guess we’ll keep on keeping on.

Hi Ken,
You may want to listen to Jonathan's most recent FS Cast where he is talking to Eric Demry from Freedom Scientific about what is new in Jaws 18. Also, another Podcast you would want to check out is one on Blind Cool Tech where I think it was James Oats demonstrates Windows 10 Anniversary update and the Edge browser with Windows Narrator. Narrator is becoming a more mature screenreader and apparently you can use Edge with it with some efficiency although I haven't tried it yet. According to the Podcast NVDA is going to release an update in October which works quite well with Edge but Jaws is still having problems getting it to work and it is my understanding that this is not a major new feature in Jaws 18. In fact, Jaws 18 is probably one of the least impressive updates in my view so far. As far as running the beta I would definitely encourage you to try it because I find Jaws betas by the time they become betas usually work pretty well and the nice thing is that you are not limited to Jaws 18 Beta. If you are running Jaws 17 or 16 you can install the beta without ill effect and if you find something doesn't work as expected you can simply unload the Beta with Insert+F4 and use whatever hot key you may setup to load your previous version of Jaws. It's not like running the beta of an operating system where it's all or nothing.

Hi list, a question. looking on the FS website I saw that the public beta of jaws 18 is available. I usually don’t download a beta version, does anyone on list know when the final version of 18 is coming out? also for anyone who has downloaded that beta, how well does it work with the edge browser and the windows 10 mail app and groove music?

I saved the PDF document, and then read it separately, and it became much more readable.
There were still some formatting issues, but at least I didn’t get the word “clickable” at the end of every line.

Diana:
I had a similar issue several weeks ago, when I became unable to get to my Outlook 2016 folder list via the usual shift tab command.
Try shift F6 when in your message list , and see if that helps you.
This suggestion came up on one of the Jaws liss, and has worked reasonably well for me.
Another thing I would suggest is that you call Freedom Scientific about this issue.
I was told that Microsoft and FS are aware of the issue, but the more we remind them of it, the more likely it will get resolved.
I’m not sure how helpful this is, but I want you to know you are not alone.

Sorry if this topic is somewhere in the archive, I looked but couldn’t find anything.
Outlook was working fine on my Surface in Windows 8, Classic Shell, Office 365 with JAWS 17 until recently. I had a list of all of my mailboxes which I could access by pressing Enter, Once in the box, I could tab once, then move up and down through the message list, and press Enter on any message I wanted to open. Not sure what I have done but now I see no mailboxes, I have a list of messages from my default inbox, which I can open, but I can’t get to any other boxes. My husband can see my list of boxes in the left pane, but I am stuck in the right one and there is a tab that says all mailboxes and a search box, and my list of messages. I have tried to play around with Views but have only made things worse, and can’t seem to find anything in the JAWS Help files that changes things. I am suspecting that things changed after an update, but can’t confirm. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

yeah have fiddled with narrator and windows 10. now that I have figured out how to stop windows from ducking audio might work a bit with narrator. since neither jaws or NVDA don't work with edge. also guess jaws no longer notifies you about the new FS cast.

When I do insert T, I just get the title of the news letter, followed by Mozilla Firefox.
I’m beginning to wonder if it is something with the document.
I tried opening the link with Internet Explorer 11, and couldn’t get beyond the Open parent document window.
When I hit enter or the spacebar on that window, Jaws says page 1, but I can’t seem to advance from there.

I agree, when I upgraded my laptop which is almost 5 years old the experience was quite poor, I then did a complete fresh install and it improved by 100% and I had few issues since. The good thing is that once you upgrade a computer via the upgrade option you can then do a fresh install even if you don't have a Windows Key and it should activate just fine. Regards, Sieghard

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get JAWS to work more consistently and get rid of some of the stuff running in the background? And what should I get rid of? I've only recently upgraded to it so any help would be appreciated. Karen
