What's the best way to update JAWS?

Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.

Hi,

What’s the best way to update JAWS, to the latest version of J17 from an earlier version of J17?

I seem to recall someone posting problems after using the Update routhe from within the JAWS control panel on the PC. Is it better to download directly from the FS site?

Thanks in advance, Keith

Hello guys,

I have been looking for a web site editor that will work with Jaws 17. I know some of those Microsoft web editors from old do sort of work. I have tried Squarespace with no luck. Unless I’m doing something wrong I don’t know. Any help would be appreciated.

Luis

Hello,

I find that with the latest version of Jaws, when it comes to the latest version of iTunes, the Jaws Touch Cursor works very well on my Desktop PC.

Please remember that one does not need an actual touch screen in order to use the Jaws Touch Cursor feature.

Make sure the iTunes sidebar is visible by going to the View menu and arrowing through it; if you find an option called “Hide Sidebar”, just ESC out of the menu, as the sidebar is already visible, but if the option says “Show Sidebar”, then press ENTER to select the option. Now navigate to that sidebar; two or so presses of SHIFT+F6 should do it. You will maybe just hear the word “Albums”, or you might hear “Playlist tree view, Albums, Change Views”. You want to change this to “Songs”, so press ALT+DOWN ARROW to open the list view, arrow to “Songs”, and press ENTER. A song might start playing, so hit SPACE to pause it. With the sidebar option changed, if you now press F6 a couple of times to get back to your list of tracks, you should now see a list that works properly. Note that this sidebar option is independent for all media types. So, for instance, if you want to see your TV episodes all in a list, you would do the same as above, but the sidebar would contain options related to TV shows, and you would select Episodes.

Maria

Re: posting on YouTube

Press h until you see the heading that says comments. Sometimes this
takes a while to load, and it's kind of a pain. When you get that
heading, scroll down with your arrow key and you will hear, "Add a
public comment." Press enter on that and there will be an edit box.
Hit e until you hear edit, and hit enter to get into forms mode, and
then you can start typing. If you don't have a YouTube account, when
you click add a public comment you will be prompted to create a Google
Plus page. This should be easier since you're using Gmail, but I'm
not sure what all the procedure is to do this since they've changed it
so many times and I've had a YouTube account since 2006. I hope that
helps.

Re: Changing read only format when opening word 13 doc

As an addition to Steve's instructions with regard to Word, if you are dealing with any other type of MS-Office attachment, e.g. Excel Spreadsheet or Access Database, you must follow the same instructions he gave in each of those respective Office programs.

Some people will scream that this opens a huge potential security hole, but it's not huge at all if you only deal with attachments from sources that you trust.  I turned this setting off years ago because I'll be *&%^-ed if I'm going to be dealing with having to enable editing for Office files that I'm constantly exchanging with others or downloading from trusted sources (and which get virus scanned when I download them to begin with).

Hi Julie,

I think this is the same as in Office 2016, which is what I have.

In Word, go to the File menu and choose Options. DownArrow to Trust Center, then Tab to the Trust Center Settings button and press it. That opens a second dialogue; DownArrow to Protected View and then Tab to and uncheck "Enable protected view for outlook attachments". OK out of both dialogues and you should be sorted.

Thanks,
Steve

Lauren,

I will presume you're working under Windows 10.  Although the principle of what follows applies to earlier versions of Windows the step-by-step instructions I will be giving do not.  It sounds like Google Chrome is currently set as your default web browser and you'd prefer that IE11 be your default web browser.  The following steps will allow you to set any installed web browser on your system as the one that will be used by default for click-through links.  I regret to say that this does not apply, at all, to Cortana if you're using the Personal Digital Assistant feature, as she's had a "forced marriage" to MS-Edge and Bing.

To set your default web browser:

  1. Hit the Windows Key and immediately type "Default Web Browser".  This will get you the "Choose a default web browser" system setting as the first and only returned item.  Hit Enter.
  2. You will now be in System Settings and be placed directly on the web browser button, which will announce whatever web browser happens to be your current default, and at the moment it sounds like yours will announce "Google Chrome"
  3. Activate the button and you will get a context menu that allows you to select any of the web browsers that came pre-installed with Windows 10, and this includes Internet Explorer, or any that you've installed such as Google Chrome or Firefox.  Once you've gained focus on your desired web browser hit Enter to assign it as the default.

After having done the above when you "click through" on a link it should open in Internet Explorer until or unless you change your default browser to something else or a Windows Update changes it for you (which can happen, and usually reverts it to MS-Edge, but doesn't happen often).
