Hi, all,

I just got done watching a couple videos about The Carpenters, and wanted to make comments, but haven’t figured out how, with JAWS. Any direction, appreciated!

Re: copy screen short cut please remind me

Just for clarification, hitting the Print Screen key will capture your entire physical screen for pasting into any image editor.  Hitting ALT+Print Screen will capture only the active window, so if you have an error dialog that has focus when you hit ALT+Print Screen it is only that dialog box [the active window] that is captured.

There are times when one is preferable to the other depending on what you're trying to capture and share.

Re: Which version of office is best with Jawss?

Maria Kristic

Hi Keith,

Hmmm, I suppose that's a possibility as with any mainstream software, but it
hasn't happened in the year or so that I've had Office 365. I actually want
to say that something, though I can't remember what, improved
accessibility-wise with an update, so it can of course go the other way,
too! From what I've seen and read from them, it seems that Microsoft has
really increased its commitment to accessibility recently (the Office focus
group sessions at the US blindness consumer conventions, the partnerships
and dialogue with the US blindness consumer groups, the Disability Answer
Desk, and so on), so I personally feel pretty confident in installing
updates and assuming things will continue to work as they should.

Hope it helps!

Regards,
Maria

Office 365 includes all the desktop versions of the Office programs; I am
guessing the Home edition you mention does not include the desktop version
of all seven Office programs as Office 365 does. The subscription means that
your Office programs will always be updated with new features as they are
added, whereas the standalone suites like the Home you mention are more
static to the time they were released and thus don't get updates other than
perhaps security fixes. With Office 365, you also get OneDrive space (1TB if
you buy the Personal subscription, 5TB for the Home subscription). With 365,
you can use the Office apps for iOS and Android. You also get a certain
number of Skype minutes (one hour per user per month if memory serves) for
calling landlines and mobile numbers. The Home subscription gives you the
ability to install Office on up to five computers, five tablets, and five
phones (the Personal subscription is one computer, one tablet, one phone).
The standalone suites are a perpetual license, whereas 365 requires you to
maintain a subscription for full functionality. Whether you go for a
standalone suite or 365, you will be using the same desktop programs, so
there is no difference with that in terms of accessibility. Of course, with
Office 365, you also have access to Office Online.

Maria

Re: i tunes

Maria Kristic

Make sure the iTunes sidebar is visible by going to the View menu and arrowing through it; if you find an option called “Hide Sidebar”, just ESC out of the menu, as the sidebar is already visible, but if the option says “Show Sidebar”, then press ENTER to select the option. Now navigate to that sidebar; two or so presses of SHIFT+F6 should do it. You will maybe just hear the word “Albums”, or you might hear “Playlist tree view, Albums, Change Views”. You want to change this to “Songs”, so press ALT+DOWN ARROW to open the list view, arrow to “Songs”, and press ENTER. A song might start playing, so hit SPACE to pause it. With the sidebar option changed, if you now press F6 a couple of times to get back to your list of tracks, you should now see a list that works properly. Note that this sidebar option is independent for all media types. So, for instance, if you want to see your TV episodes all in a list, you would do the same as above, but the sidebar would contain options related to TV shows, and you would select Episodes.

Maria

Re: how to get the iheartradio.com site to display genres and stations other than the top New York ones

Maria Kristic

I am using Windows 10 and JAWS 17. I also do have an iHeartRadio account with which I am logged in on the site. Just mentioning all of that because I'm not sure if it makes a difference to my results. Anyway, when I TAB to the Genre link (i.e., navigate to it by other means and then TAB/SHIFT+TAB to make sure it's in focus) and press ENTER, I am taken to the Genre page. If that doesn't work for you, type the address iheart.com/genre and that should take you to the Genre page.

I would like to find genres and other things using iheartradio.com. I like the fact that it's free and I don't have to (yet) create a password or anything to listen.

I would like to find stations and genres and such using a browse feature on the iheart.com page. Does such a feature exist using Jaws
14 and windows 7? I go to iheart.com and press enter on genres. But the actual genre list does not appear. Iheartradio.com seems to instead direct me to listen to top stations in New York City. Do any of you have any suggestions on how to get the site to work? I would like to contact them and let them know my issues but I'm not sure how to do this. The site worked a lot better some years ago.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts,

Re: Bookmark in pdf and ppt

Maria Kristic

You can use PlaceMarkers in PDFs as you can on Web pages. Check out the JAWS
Help topic on those. CTRL+SHIFT+K launches the PlaceMarker dialog. K and
SHIFT+K jump between PlaceMarkers. When adding a PlaceMarker, be sure to
clear the "Define for all pages on current domain" check box, as this is not
a Web page and so that check box needs to be cleared for the PlaceMarker to
actually get added. The default name of the PlaceMarker is the line on which
it is placed, so that is like your highlight when you are going through the
PlaceMarker list; you can edit the PlaceMarker Name field as you can any
edit area in Windows.

RE PowerPoint, in the View ribbon, in the Show group, TAB to "Notes Page"
and press ENTER to check it. I mention the Show group because, if you're
entirely TABBING through the View ribbon, you first come to the Presentation
Views group in which there is also an option called "Notes Page", but that
is not the one you want to check. Once you've TABBED in to the View ribbon
and are in the Presentation Views group, use CTRL+LEFT and RIGHT ARROWS to
quickly navigate between groups. Once "Notes Page" in the Show group of the
View ribbon is checked, the Notes Page will be in the F6/SHIFT+F6 navigation
cycle.

Maria

Is there a way to put a bookmark or marker in pdf documents. I have some
pdf documents that are readable with JAWS but they are very long and I want
to bookmark the section or line where I left off so that I can go right to
it next time I access the document. Also I'd like to in a sense "highlight"
lines or words. If multiple bookmarks can be placed in the document then I
can mark those things that I find particularly important so that I can
access just those phrases in the future.

Also I have a question about Powerpoint. I am wondering why pressing F6 does
not ever get me to the notes area in a ppt presentation. I am using office
365 powerpoint and i think i have jaws 16, although it may be even older
than that, I'm not sure.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,
To get JAWS to speak the numbers the way you want, press
Insert+6 on the numbers row to open settings center. Make
sure that you are in the default account by pressing
CTRL+Shift+C. In the edit box of settings center, type the
word number. Four suggestions will come up, downarrow to
choice three. It will say something like speak full digits
five numbers or above. Set this to how many digits you want
JAWS to say the digits like 7 digits. Now, you will hear the
numbers as you want them. tab to the Okay button and press
enter to save the settings in settings center. Now, for the
next question, to get the JAWS window out of the way, in the
JAWS window, go to the options menuu and press enter on
preferences. tab to where it says to run JAWS from the
system tray, and press the space bar on that check box. Now,
shut down JAWS, and when you restart JAWS, The JAWS window
will not be there anymore as you alt+tab, and it should read
the numbers the way you want JAWS to read them.
Take care,
David Moore

Try the following:
1. While in Firefox press, Alt + T, for tools & press, O, for options, Tab 1 time to the list of options, & press, Insert / Jaws key + Z, to turn the Virtual cursor off.
2. Arrow down to, Advanced & tab 1 time to, General.
3. Tab through these unchecking the various checkboxes.  Personally I have
