Hello,

I also experienced Word crashing when trying to "save as" and starting using
OneDrive. Also, when I tab to save on this pc most of the time it works. I
spent a long long time over several days with MicroSoft Office Accessibility
tech support and they tried all kind of things on my computer and they
couldn't solve the problem. It does seem to have started when Jaws had the
last update to Jaws 17 just about a month ago.

This is very helpful, thank you. Perhaps many Jaws users did not experience
this issue because they automatically use this keystroke, but for some
reason I had always used the other one.

Hi everyone,

I have had this problem for several weeks, so you may have talked
about it a while back and I missed it. If you weeks ago, Microsoft
word started crashing when I try to save the file. I can save changes
to an already existing file, but when I created a new file it would
crash every time as I tried to save it. I went on the Microsoft help
pages, and I found a post that said that word is now crashing when
saving a file while using jaws. So it is a known issue, but there was
no
sense of when it would be fixed.

Has anyone come up with a good work around for this problem? I have
been using WordPad, but that's not a very good workaround.

I am using windows 10, office 365, and the latest version of jaws. I
think this started happening before the latest jaws update came out. I
wish I had any idea when it would be fixed.

Thanks, Bonnie

braille display refusing to read further than the bottom of the screen

André van Deventer <andredbsa@...>

Hi all

Folling to my earlier question about a braille display.

In some programs like for example Duxbury, I am unable to read further than the bottom of the screen.  In other words, the display will not scroll automatically to the next screen.  The interesting thing is that this does not happen in for example Word Internet Explorer or adobe acrobat reader.  Using Jaws 17 with an old Papenmeier braille-el.

André

Thanx man!

Got it sorted somehow by playing with the switches on the front of the papenmeier braille-l  it seems to have something to do with that.

Amazing though – this old 20 cell vertical and 80 cell horizontal display does not even have a USB port and is over 10 years old and yet it works like a charm with Jaws 17  using a usb to serial adaptor!

Re: JAWS Command-Line Arguments and Switches

What? I'm not talking about installing the thing, I'm talking about
shutting it down under program control. Starting it is easy, but I was
hoping there was a restart option, shortening my batch file by one
line.

On Wed, 17 Aug 2016 14:46:12 +0000, you wrote:

Hi Steve,

Launch the JAWS setup executable from a command line with the /? Switch, and after UAC the Freedom Scientific Setup Package Help should appear, which lists out all of the command line arguments/switches that are available.

I have also pasted this information below. Good luck!

The Freedom Scientific setup package is a tool used to install or uninstall multiple components, including the main product. The following explains the available, optional command-line options. These commands are not case sensitive.

/MoreHelp
Displays additional help information, if available, about the setup package such as a list of setup types. The installation process is not performed.

Example:
c:\package.exe /MoreHelp

/ExtractSettings <Path-to-file>
Outputs the contents of Settings.ini to the output file specified. The installation process is not performed. If the output file already exists, it is overwritten. If there are spaces in the path to the file, the path must be enclosed in quotes.

Example:
c:\package.exe /ExtractSettings "c:\FS setup\OldSettings.ini"

/ReplaceSettings <Path-to-file>
Specifies an initialization file for the setup package engine to use instead of the Settings.ini file stored in the resources. This flag can be used if any of the contents in Settings.ini must be overridden. If there are spaces in the path to the file, the path must be enclosed in quotes.

Example:
c:\package.exe /ReplaceSettings "c:\FS setup\NewSettings.ini"

/ReplaceLanguage <Path-to-file>
Specifies a resource DLL for the setup package engine to use instead of the resource DLL file stored in the bootstrapper. This flag can be used to specify an alternate, external set of resources for the installation. If there are spaces in the path to the file, the path must be enclosed in quotes.

Example:
c:\package.exe /ReplaceLanguage "c:\FS setup\NewResources.dll"

/Log [Path-to-file]
Allows the user to specify the location of the setup package log file. Logging is enabled even if this command line argument is not specified unless the /NoLog command line argument is used. If this command line argument is not specified the setup package log file will be located in C:\Users\aaron.page\AppData\Local\Temp\\jawssetup\FS_Setup_Package.log.

Example:
c:\package.exe /Log "c:\myFolder\mySetup.log"
The log file is created under c:\myFolder\mySetup.log.

/NoLog
Allows the user to disable the creation of the setup package log file.

/Type <name>
Specifies the setup type to use instead of the default. To view a list of available setup types, use the /MoreHelp command-line option.

Example:
c:\package.exe /type ServerWithSpeech

/Passthru <Installer1 [, Installer2, ..., InstallerN]>@<Command>
This argument will append the specified command to the specified installers in a given package.

<Installer1 [, Installer2, ..., InstallerN]> - this portion of the argument specifies the installers which will receive the command. Each of the Installer strings should correspond to a section name in Settings.ini.
<Command> - the command to append to each of the specified installer's command-line. If you wish to passthrough a command that includes the characters /, - or # you must use the following escape sequences:
Sequence String
#0 #
#1 -
#2 /

Please note: All occurences of # in <Command> are interpreted as the beggining of an escape sequence. All instances of # and the character which follows the # will be replaced if a matching string can be found. If no corresponding string can be found then the # and the character following it will be removed
For example, the sequence ## in <Command> would be removed where as #0 would be replaced with #.

Example:
c:\Package.exe /passthru AnInstaller,AnotherInstaller@#2l

Asume that the following is the Settings.ini from the above package.exe.
---Begin Settings.ini---
[default]
PreInstall = AnotherInstaller|AThirdInstaller
MainInstall = AnInstaller

[AnInstaller]
Name = AI
File = msiexec.exe
Arguments = /i AI.msi

[AnotherInstaller]
Name = AnI
File = AnI.exe

[AThirdInstaller]
Name = AtI
File = AtI.exe
---End Settings.ini---

The complete command-line executed for AnInstaller would be:
msiexec.exe /i AI.msi /l

The complete command-line executed for AnotherInstaller would be:
Ani.exe /l

Re: Using Jaws Scrictly for MathML and Document reading, (sighted user)

Page, Aaron

Hi Ben,

You might want to consider instead using the free MathPlayer plugin from Design Science. MathPlayer is required for NVDA to interact with math content, but it is also  a stand-alone tool that has its own speech abilities.

Using MathPlayer, you can simply right-click an equation and select “Speak Expression” to have it read to you. There is no need to navigate the focus or listen to the verbal clutter of a screen reader like you have to with JAWS or NVDA. MathPlayer also provides other features such as synchronized visual and Braille highlighting of the equation as it is read, the ability to magnify equations, and the ability to copy/paste equations into Word, Maple, Mathematica, etc. MathPlayer can be used to read mathML equations in IE, Firefox, Word, and PowerPoint.

Hope this helps. Feel free to contact me off-list if you have any questions.

First RE FS, you might want to try Technical Support at (727) 803-8600. Customer Service is more geared to product sales, checking on order status, and such…

Second, RE your question, how about muting speech when you don’t need it (JAWSKey+SPACE, S toggles speech; JAWSKey is either CAPS LOCK or INSERT key) and then just unmuting it with that same command when you need speech to read something to you? Just a thought…

Good luck!

Mark,

            Unless you have linked your inboxes, the account being actively used at the moment will be the one from which any new message you compose will be sent.

            I've not linked my inboxes simply because I use different accounts for different purposes and always want to know which account I'm using at any moment and know that the messages I compose are definitely going to be sent from that account.  Based on what I can see as far as settings go, I suspect that even if you're using the linked inbox what will happen for replies is that the account associated with that message will be used.  I honestly have no idea what will happen if you hit the "New Mail" button from the linked inbox.  My gut tells me that it will use the account of whatever message happens to have focus at that moment since there doesn't appear to be any "default account" setting that I can find.

Word crashes when saving file

Bonnie Vegiard

Hi everyone,

I have had this problem for several weeks, so you may have talked about it a while back and I missed it. If you weeks ago, Microsoft word started crashing when I try to save the file. I can save changes to an already existing file, but when I created a new file it would crash every time as I tried to save it. I went on the Microsoft help pages, and I found a post that said that word is now crashing when saving a file while using jaws. So it is a known issue, but there was no sense of when it would be fixed.

Has anyone come up with a good work around for this problem? I have been using WordPad, but that's not a very good workaround.

I am using windows 10, office 365, and the latest version of jaws. I think this started happening before the latest jaws update came out. I wish I had any idea when it would be fixed.

Thanks, Bonnie

Re: Using Jaws Scrictly for MathML and Document reading, (sighted user)

Ben,

         Depending on how long you've had JAWS and whether you could return it you had ought to take a look at NVDA.  It is well suited to reading MathML and there are add-ons, if I'm remembering correctly, dedicated to this.

          JAWS is a marvelous product, but if your goal is having MathML read to you and you don't need a screen reader otherwise this, or if you're the owner of Microsoft Office 2010 or later, perhaps Window-Eyes for Office [which I'm not certain about the MathML support], is a more cost effective option.  There are individuals on the NVDA group that have discussed using it with MathML on multiple occasions and I was looking at it for a client of mine because it has excellent support for that particular function.

Hi,
Under windows 10 and IE11 with JFW 17 as I arrow down through the multiple zip downloads my screen reader says visited link on the ones already interacted upon so I’ve never downloaded anything more than once.
I hope that helps.

Check to see if you are downloading the same song over and over by doing this, instead of a new song each time.

On a call to Microsoft, I was told that when you down arrow between downloads, the last download is picked, but that when you tab from one to another, you select the next one in a list. At least in Windows 7 anyway.

Hi,

Yes once purchased if you tell it no to downloading with their app it’ll prepare you a zip file of your purchases.  This can be accessed both from your after purchase page or from your order history page for that digital order or your music library I believe.  It’s quite user friendly. If you have a shopping cart full of songs and there’s more than one zip file you’ll just have to amend the names of the zip file in the save as dialog box so as not to over write one file over another.  So I just append their amazon download.zip name with a number before the dot zip so as to avoid this.

I hope that helps.

Has anyone on this list bought and downloaded digital mp3's from amazon.com lately? Are they now accessible since they got rid of the mp3 downloader?

I am seeking answers, since I want to download some mp3's from Amazon.

Thank you.
